Cancel culture IRL

And our cops the freedom to be in the KKK in their free time. Who really cares if their kids teacher has a white supremacist podcast anyway?
Are these examples analogous to publicly shaming and cancelling actors for their political statements, in your view?

Do actors, for example, have the chance to influence children out of earshot of other adults?

Do they have to choose how much lethal force is appropriate against people on the street?

She is absolutely free to do what she likes off the clock.
I don't think the standard Hollywood morality clauseWP is a particularly good example of absolute freedom.

They are examples of cancel culture. And these are people who were actually fired instead of merely had her character not written into next season.

If there was no big production made about this litterally no one would have noticed as it there are plenty of badass women in the Mandolorian(4 of the 7 characters storming the ship in the finale are women after all).

But how many episodes was Disney morally obligated to write her character into next season?

Okay, but they aren't exactly good analogs to what I was talking about. If you believe all cancellations are justifiable because some of them are, well, I'm not sure how to even wrap my head around that.

Why do you think it's okay to lobby Disney to go with zero but not, say, four?

You are perfectly able to express your opinions, it doesn't mean that Disney wants her associated with their brand.

You don't like free markets?
I think you'll find that certain contractual arrangements (such as the aforementioned morality clauses) increase corporate freedom of action at the expense of individual employees. As you may have guessed, I'm not a fan. Are you?

Just as movie studios didn't want communist sympathizers associated with their brand in the early 50's.

Am I reading now that he claims that his wife has been fired over his comments?

Not the exact claim I saw. He had follow-up statements that his wife was fired for her defense of his statements. Not at all the same thing as being fired for what he said.

I have not seen her defense of his screw you and hope you die in this natural disaster posting nor do I know her position that she was supposedly let go from to guage how I feel about that.

Yet you seemed to take issue with people spewing hate speech for at least some careers. Make up your mind. Or make a more nuanced argument.

I think people being paid large sums of money to act on television shows having to watch their mouth in public in order to continue to be employed for said large sums is so low in my list of concerns for worker rights, that I'm going to put it below "Handsoap in the bathroom smells too lemony".

Way below the "Dude your getting a Dell" guy losing his sponsorship for getting busted with some pot.

Hmm should Subway have stuck by or canceled Jared?

And here is where we will simply have to disagree. As a matter of ethics and (on occasion) public policy, I'd prefer our corporate overlords to have somewhat less influence over our off-the-clock behaviour.

For certain jobs, “off the clock” doesn’t exist. Like for instance, film and television stars. It’s one of the reasons why they are paid so well. That’s pretty much baked-in, and it’s weird that you seem to be pretending to not understand that concept.

Although there are obvious exceptions, maintaining a certain broad appeal is often a job requirement of public figures, like actors or spokesmen for products. I think it’s important to keep that in mind when talking about public statements effecting employment status. The more public your job the more your employer is going to care about your public appearances.

Back a dump truck full of cash up to my door with the stipulation that I have to not behave like an ***hole in public, and I feel like I could manage that infringement on my “freedom”. But then again, I’m an emotionally-healthy adult.

Why exactly should we assent to this arrangement? It seems to empower corporations at the expense of employees, typically for the sake of ideological or moral conformity.

Having used yourself as the sole reference point, you've convinced me not to stand up for you.

Oh come on. Nobody is being "canceled" for things like showing ankle or not having sex through a hole in the sheet like it's the 1940s. In Amish Country. The Conservative Part of It.

These aren't "morality causes" they are "Holy **** how is it that it's 2021 and you still don't get this" level of complaints, almost repeated, almost away for people who don't even try to open a dialog and dig their heels in and act like that can even understand what the fuss is about.

Perhaps.
I have similar consideration for the opinions and behaviors of entertainers (including athletes) when they are not directly engaged in the process of entertaining me.

I do not care a whit if an actress who makes me laugh enjoys torturing animals, or a talented center for a basketball team I watch plays his games on work-release from prison for molesting children.
These are not people whom I know. They are people manufacturing a product (my entertainment) and that is completely separate from the total strangers they are to me IRL.
Further, I believe it to be a stupid habit to give consideration to the opinions and actions of these strangers by anyone. A habit that should not be dignified with a response.

It’s hard to take your worker’s rights stance seriously when you’re outraged over a millionaire no longer having her job pretending to shoot laser guns in outer space.

Just as movie studios didn't want communist sympathizers associated with their brand in the early 50's.

How many time did those communist sympathizers broadcast to the world “I’m a communist!” before getting blacklisted?
