Here's a nightmare: Suppose Biden wins the electoral vote, but Trump wins the popular vote? You think he'll accept the loss gracefully?

Actually altering the Constitution tends to be very difficult in practice, though, regardless, and it's not so likely that the US will take a cue from Chile's rejection of their military coup instituted Constitution.

The perennial problem with changing the system is that it has to be changed by the people who've done well out of the system as it is, at least recently. Change seems more urgent when you can't implement it.

Some people would rather believe in what they want to believe rather than facing reality. Trump gives them an authority figure who will give them permission to close their eyes and believe in their beliefs.

Huffpost using AP sources is reporting exactly that right now, and by no small margin.

Biden with 131 electorals, Trump with 92.

Biden with 29.9m votes, Trump with 31.2m

I was commenting on people moaning if they don't like the winner.

You do realise the other side will probably be moaning just as much if your dude wins.

Yeah, that's what I was hoping when I looked at Michigan and Wisconsin. Otherwise it is dire.

Does America have referendums like us?

Where if you get a petition together with enough public signatures a question is put to the people.

In this case a change to the system.

(A bit like a mini election by popular vote)

If it wins and is binding things change.
