2020 Presidential Election

I know correlation does not equal causation but I find it interesting that in Michigan, Biden is polling about one and a half percent higher since the arrests of the terrorists planning to kidnap the governor. There are some other factors as well. Trump returned to large scale rallies about the same time which, ironically, hurts him with everyone who does not go to Trump rallies. Trump is also out of money and getting killed in TV and radio ads there. Still for polls conducted after the arrests, that's a pretty good jump for Biden.

We never had a real lockdown in this country anyway. Not only did the grocery stores stay open and the fast food places keep their drive-throughs open, but even retailers like Lowes stayed open. I was replacing all of my sockets & switches at the time, while also making multiple trips because I was finding out what I would and wouldn't need based on the peculiar wiring in my home. But my home was occupiable already; those things weren't "essential". Weirder yet, when I was planning on buying a new truck at an out-of-town dealer and figuring out how to get there, I found out that Greyhound (an inter-city bus company) was still running. That's a business you let stay open if your goal is to spread the virus as much as possible.

It would still be a money-maker if oil cost $100 a barrel. The main thing killing fracking is current oil price.

And the main thing killing oil prices is Trump's inability to deal with the virus in a decisive way early on.

The unemployed don't buy a lot of gasoline.

Voting Trump may end fracking for the next decade. Does that make Trump good for the environment?

Well President Trump has recently been bragging about how much the US has reduced its carbon emissions.

Of course a major recession will tend to do that. ;)

Then again, weren't carbon emissions supposed to go up as all that coal was going to replace gas and renewables ?

Massive recessions also tend to decrease immigration. Another big W for Donnie?

When I was working remotely, I put gas in my car once in three months. I was driving 12 miles to work once a week to collect any checks for agencies that didn't have electronic payment and occasionally driving 3 miles to the grocery store.

I don't quite understand the logic here (which, since it is from Trump, is understandable).

What "advantage" was being taken before? How is having potentially illegal ballot collection boxes fighting back?

I recognize that this poll is probably an outlier... (While it is from the guardian, which has an OK reputation, the polling company isn't one that gets a lot of attention)... But I don't think I have ever wanted something to be true in all my life.

From: The Guardian
Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s lead over Donald Trump has surged to a record 17 points...Democrats also injected momentum into existing supporters, with voters for Biden now more likely to turn out...The former vice-president now leads on healthcare, race relations, jobs and even the economy...

As usual, it's a lie - at least the "for years" part (implying that it's been going on for a considerable time)

In California, ballot collection from non-family members (a.k.a. ballot harvesting) was made legal for the 2018 midterm elections:

California changed its rules before the 2018 midterm elections to allow people other than family members to collect and submit ballots. Last-minute submissions of votes in the election delayed results and some pundits and Republican politicians suggested that it influenced the outcome of several elections.

While the Los Angeles Times editorial board rejected claims that any elections were affected by the new ballot harvesting law in the 2018 midterms, which is unsubstantiated, it did call for the law to be fixed or repealed, saying the law "does open the door to coercion and fraud." Republicans, in turn, are seeking to improve their own use of the practice, according to The Washington Post

By having their own boxes, the Republicans are ensuring that their ballots make it to the polls - the completely unfounded implication being that, in the past, they were being discarded.

As usual an unfounded allegation when the truth is that, if people are actually allowed to vote, Republicans are less likely to be elected.

We're seeing it all over the political discourse, a desperate and rather pathetic attempt from the Right to rebrand "fairness" as just another form of bias.

Gerrymandering, the EC, now voter suppression and intimidation. The argument is always the same. "We can't win in a fair system, so if you want a fair system that just means you are biased against us and the Left wanting a fair system where they win and the Right wanting an unfair system where they win are just two sides to the same coin."

"(Bleep) you I got mine" is such a core part of their philosophy they assume it's the same for everyone, and can't comprehend of "I want the system to be fair" having any higher motivation than "Because that's the system I will win under."

Ironically, the home improvement industry has boomed during the lockdowns as people, stuck at home, have had the time to do home projects. Outdoor projects like house painting have also skyrocketed. I couldn't even get several companies to come out and give me a quote as they were so busy this summer. A friend in Syracuse, NY says Lowe's is so low on lumber that she rushes in whenever she hears of a delivery as they're replacing a couple decks. My SIL had a new patio laid that was scheduled out 2 months due to the company being swamped.

Voted early today and did my part. Even in my small town the early voting turnout has been unreal.

Of course she can. She's been coached in the classic excuses for not answering specific questions.

I don't think "Durrrr, I donno" is exactly the answer the coaches were hoping she'd give.

I also think a lot of companies think that Trump is just plain incompetent.
They are betting that the more centrist Democrats will probably kill off the Progressives more extreme proposols. Seems like a safe bet.

Like what? Having an economy that actually works?

When in fact the most likely reason for the illegal fake ballot boxes in the first place was because the California republican party could dump the ballots in the landfill and then after the election "find" a few and claim that the poll is illegitimate because of the ballots they dumped, screaming all the while that "it was de Democrats wot done it!".

They don't care if the ballots getting tossed are their own voters', because they're so far behind in the state that they're in permanent minor party position there.

I think I can get this across without putting too much personal info outthere.

Like I've mentioned a couple of times before my county (Duval County / City of Jacksonville) is the only major urban area in Florida* that isn't safely Democrat. It went for both McCain and Trump but only by a little bit but it seems to have gone more blue in the last Senatorial election.

That district in the upper middle part of the county that goes from solid red, to light red, to light blue? Yeah I live there and it's had a massive population boom in the last few years. I think it it stays blue Biden will probably take Duval, which could easily tip Florida for him.

The Republican Desperation in the air is palpable in my immediate area. I mean it's still almost certainly going to be close but the Republicans definitely either feel like the can't and/or are going to lose this county.

*Long story short Florida's politics and its perennial swing-stateness is because of growing urban areas and high immigrant population being balanced out by waves of old white retirees and vice versa so neither political side every really gets a full foothold in the state.
