Riots, looting, vandalism, etc.

How about... If the cops stop murdering black people AND the rioters stop rioting then maybe we can actually get some changes made?

And why would cops decide to stop murdering black people? It's been working out well for them so far, so why would they change their minds now?

Hey, thanks for putting things in perspective. a 12 years old boy was just found deceased from the fires in Lyons Oregon from the fires and the property damage is immense. There are sure to be far mor lives lost. These riots are nearly irrelevant. Why are we all getting so worked up clutching our pearls about the arsons and murders on our streets or when the real police shoot an innocent and harmless person or when the CHOP zone "sentinels" pseudo police kill unarmed black people as well? Fires a far worse to life and limb.

Also the whole accidental versus intentional angle. Fire, lacking sentience, makes for lousy sociopolitical discussion. Unlike arguing the merits of running around with a gun and...

Yeah, accidental versus intentional.

The riots are because of the police brutality and murders. I think if the cops stopped doing that, the riots would stop.

You either go to a protest to protest, or you go to a protest to cover it as a journalist. You can't do both. I won't fault a journalist for choosing to be a protester instead, as long as he doesn't pretend to still be a journalist while he's protesting.
You have a personal definition and that's fine. But there is no rulebook decreeing who is or isn't a real journalist.

Okay let me know where I lose people.

- If the cops stop murdering black people in the streets, the rioters will stop rioting.

- If the rioters stop rioting, the police will continue to murder black people in the streets.

One of these things is a reaction to the other. It's not a difficult concept.

This is a pretty good analysis of the situation. Succinct, accurate and to the point. It's not simplifying a complex issue because it really is as straightforward as you have laid out. The problem is in the premise: cops aren't murdering black people in the streets.

Cops not killing/brutalizing/robbing black people (and really people of every race, but black and indigenous people more so than other groups) is the desired change.

Told y'all years ago that younger black and brown people weren't having any more of the nonsense we were forced to tolerate during the crack era when Reagan was looking for excuses to reinforce US-style apartheid. That nonsense is for the Bernie Bros and cable news pundits.

"But aren't broken windows just as bad as 12-year old kids being gunned down by the state for playing in a park?" The correct answer is no. So get to work, help defund and reform the police.

What's wrong with the premise, as you call it, is that Floyd wasn't rioting.

Under new direction from Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler, at least three police officers have been placed on administrative duty after troubling behavior at the nightly protests for racial justice.

Protesters have long maintained that the mayor, who serves as the police commissioner, has done little to reprimand specific officers whose conduct at protests appears particularly egregious — allowing them to be credibly accused of misconduct one night and come back out to police protests the next.

This includes the officer seen tackling and repeatedly punching a protester in the face.

Seems Tear Gas Ted has been looking at his unfavorable numbers lately.

The protesters can win this battle. Keep the foot on the gas.

According to the NYPD, rioters in Manhatten caused $100,000 worth of property damage overnight.

The NYPD paid out $230,000,000 in damages last year from 6,472 individual lawsuits around police misconduct.

The rioters damage equates to the same amount of misconduct damages accrued by the NYPD in 4 hrs and 23 minutes of operation. A bargain, if you ask me!

NYPD remains the largest looters in the city by a long shot.

...and that considering cop estimates of value are generally lol inflated it is probably more like 3 hours if that. Plus the amounts paid out ignores all the damages caused but not sued for.

So probably about 20 minutes, really.

The problem is in the premise: cops aren't murdering black people in the streets.

And the point of the riots is to make so this lie can no longer be maintained.

I think people have a fundamental misunderstanding here.

The point of civil unrest is not to "change anyone's mind." It's to make it clear that the current status-quo is no longer acceptable and it will change whether you want it to or not.

Cops shot an unarmed autistic 13 year old white kid that was having a mental breakdown. Let's just wait for the "All Lives Matter" crowd to throw a protest.

It isn't odd that BLM protesters get very, very angry whenever the cops brutalize a member of their communities. It's odd that the CHUDs seem to not give a **** when it happens to them. Really exposes the lie of "All lives matter", it's just a bunch of bootlickers rubber stamping approval for any police violence.

When white boy Daniel Shaver was murdered by police, BLM was one of a very few who were publically outraged. These people will literally let their own children be killed in exchange for living under neo-fascists. Its just stunning.

But man, prevent them from getting haircuts? Watch out.

As the parent of two autistic boys, I have to wonder why she called the police in the first place. Asperger syndrome makes him pretty high functioning, what on earth could have required any police intervention? This story lacks far too many details for any sort of judgement on who to blame for what happened, starting with why the cops were called in the first place.
