Personally, I think every school that starts playing sports before a vaccine is available should get hit with a 5-year moratorium on all federal money. It's bad enough that the professional sports are screwing around for the benefit of their super-rich team owners and the super-rich owners of TV stations/networks. If our universities/colleges can't survive without a season of football and postponed basketball, that says some truly horrible things about our nation's priorities.

Dincha know? American colleges are for getting a piece of paper for a job, partying and sports. Not necessarily in that order of importance. Higher learning? What's that? I'd put a 19th century 8th grader up against today's college grad.

That's the second article I've read today that asserted that the GOP convention gave voters "permission" to vote to Trump (the other was an editorial in the Washington Post by a right-winger). Seems to me that that is a pretty damning statement. If all that happened after four days of nonsensical blather and lie after lie is that voters now have "permission" to vote for Trump, then the GOP in general and Trump in particular have absolutely nothing going for them.

I disagree with it starting at the top. I've poked at this before, though, but... I've actually been a little shocked at my mother (a wonderful woman, but ignorant on the issue, like so many other white people that have mostly been surrounded almost exclusively by white people for their entire lives) slowly starting to comprehend that racism hasn't actually vanished and being shocked and horrified when confronted with evidence. In her case, if I understand it correctly, that journey started with a speaker at church who detailed some of the great injustice visited upon him - the writer of Just Mercy, I think?

Ignorance abounds, yes, much as it seems that there's increasing interest from people to learn.

As for the sports related protests, regardless, I neither support nor oppose them, directly. Probably because I think that watching sports is boring. :p I do, however, think that the objections that I've heard to various protests have largely been unconvincing to me from an objective standpoint. At least there are a couple valid objections that can be made to athletes going on strike, though. The objections to kneeling seemed to all be utterly inane.
