But one of them might make a fatal mistake* or do something totally outrageous that rules them out completely**.

*For Biden: Get the 101 digit of PI wrong
*For Trump: ......

**For Biden: Wear a tan suit
**For Trump: ....

Trump - "Goes on a 20 minute speech full of racism, sexism, where every single fact he utters is objectively wrong, where admits even brags about committing illegal acts, uses white supremacist language, openly suggests he won't step down if he loses, calls for legal retaliation against his political rivals, and eats a live baby."
Biden - "Makes a single 'Gaffe'." (Tries to say Butternut Squash and it comes out Squatternut Bosh)
Pundits - "People are split on who performed better at last night's debate."

I really cannot imagine what it would be in President Trump's case.

Even if he were to have a seizure during the debate and collapse, there would likely be a wave of public sympathy.

I suppose if he were to drop trousers and defecate in the middle of the debate floor but even then the right wing media would be scrambling to say that he was being ironic or something.

There's a few minutes in the Swan interview -- when they're talking about covid stats -- when Trump is a bit more puckered than usual and the imbecile sounds a lot like the Bill Murray character in Caddyshack.

I know this is just another silly thing among lots of silly things, and I had to go and check whether I wasn't reading something smelling of onions, but it appears to be real: Link

Lou Dobbs asks: "A lot of my friends are very concerned about what the federal government is doing with regards to UFOs, so if I could just ask you... are you going to commit more resources to exploring UFOs and open the documents to the public?"
And trump replies: "Well I think you're probably... in this country, you're the UFO expert, so, I'm going to be guided by the great Lou Dobbs. And I will tell you that I'll do whatever you ask me to do, including total transparency."

To his credit, trump is reported as not putting much stock in the belief in UFOs, and this is just the usual bit of pandering for political benefit. I didn't actually listen to the interview so I am still a bit suspicious that I'm misunderstanding something in this whole exchange... but... err... UFOs, Lou? srsly? I already thought Lou Dobbs was nuts, but i didn't realise he was alien-level nuts.

To be fair, considering that a fair chunk of trump's support base is made up conspiracy hugging nutters, it seems to me that it would have made a certain amount of political sense for trump to have walked into the presidency, accessed whatever secret information might be available to him about the subject and declassified it.
To quote Rhett Jones of Gizmodo, "He’s too much of an impulsive oaf not to have blurted out “Aliens are real, folks” amidst the din of helicopter rotor blades on the White House lawn. He wouldn’t be able to stop himself.", but Jones goes on to his own slightly nutty conclusions.

He’s virtually neck and neck with Biden in the latest (Harris?) poll and ahead of him with white voters. It also seemed to say that he was also ahead with those with over 4 years college education which I find particularly surprising as I thought that was always the opposite way round...

If this poll is even remotely accurate then America is ******.

As of yesterday the average of the national polls show Biden up by 7.6% points.
https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/president-general/national/. The range in Biden's favor is from 3% (Harris) to 12% (Ipsos).

That's what happens when you let an entire huge chunk of the population drink the Kool-aid that the worst sin you can commit is to be "full of yourself."

In their twisted minds Trump being a constant rolling dumpster fire really is less of a sin than Biden making a "gaffe."

Why? This is going to be hard to put into words exactly but you have to try and put yourself into their headspace. The only sin they recognize is having standards you don't live up to 100%. Look at the language they use. Every complaint about the Left is the same. They are "pretentious." They are "hypocritical." They are "full of themselves." They "aren't as smart as they think they are." Notice a pattern? Stripped of the exact examples the complaint is always the same. "The Left is wrong because they have standards they don't live up to 100% all the time, ergo not having any consistent standards is better."

It's why every argument from them is a gotcha/Oh lookie I get to use your own argument against you/Shoes on the other foot type.

In what way is Trump not full of himself (or something very similar)?

I think it's more a hatred of "elites", whatever the hell that means.

In what way is Trump not full of himself?

The same way Trump can stand in front of a sellout crowd in Iowa, say "How stupid are the people of Iowa?" and then go on to win Iowa in a landslide.

Trump thinks he's better than everyone, but he doesn't (in the eyes of his followers) think he's better than you.

Biden with his fancy book learning, always talking he knows what best for us just because... he knows what's best for us is different.

But again the core mentality really is "Biden (and by extension "The Left") has standards but doesn't always live up to them, Trump has no standards, so therefore Trump somehow wins."

Trump is our punishment for the sin of having standards while not being perfect.

The crazy thing is that this is only a slight exaggeration...

Oh I don't think it's an exaggeration at all. Regardless of any valid reasons to support or not support Israel our foreign policy regarding it is driven by apocalyptic end of the world fantasies.

I think it's more a hatred of "elites", whatever the hell that means.

It's certainly part of that.

It reminds me of a statement that Scott Adams once indirectly made through Dilbert, although it was years ago, before his current mental state set in.
Unless you donate everything you own and become homeless yourself, helping the homeless is an empty gesture just meant to make you feel less guilty about being better off than someone else.

Precisely! That word has been a Republican battle cry for a while. Who do they think the Republican party is? It is funded by the richest people on the planet to keep things exactly as they are. All for them and crumbs for the rest of us.

Elite doesn't mean rich. Remember, the US is a country of haves and soon-to-haves. The common folk think that they're going to make it big, at some point. No, elites are the educated ones. The ones who claim to know something. That's where Joe is correct: if you claim to know stuff, and you're ever wrong, knowledge is useless.

In the US there has been a rising antipathy to higher education amongst Republicans/conservatives principally, fostered by a Party that likes it that way for their base and borne out by the polling data.

And this sort of vague insanity really is the mentality the Right is huddling around more and more.

"The Left has standards but doesn't always live up to them 100% all of the time, therefore they are nothing but hypocrites and pretentious and dramatic. Us not having consistent, identifiable standards is better."

Improving race relations is a key priority of the Left. Therefore when a member of the Left makes a minor "gaffe" about some racial related, that's a bigger sin than Trump being openly racist all the time

And this has tapped into that nihilistic "I will mock and punish you for having standards" thing I've been going on about for close to a year now.

It's like the Reagan Era Moral Majority and sad little nihilistic emo teens had a baby and grew up into a voting demographic.

Upon departing the Oval Office for Ohio, I’ve notified my staff to continue working on an Executive Order with respect to Payroll Tax Cut, Eviction Protections, Unemployment Extensions, and Student Loan Repayment Options.
