It's not about actually distributing a vaccine and protecting the population, it's about being able to declare victory in a war, and take personal credit for that victory. He just has to convince enough voters of that.

He could do it by lowering himself onto an aircraft carrier with a big banner "Vaccine Accomplished" in the background.

Given the circumstances, I recommend dropping him onto the USS Bonhomme Richard.

I doubt Trump has a clue why it was named Bonhomme Richard in the first place.

There were certainly things that did not fall under the category of “the executive branch did not care.” In those cases what they cared about was producing the exact opposite of what the epidemiologists wanted.

Yes. But the original Bonhomme Richard is famous for being the ship captained by John Paul Jones. It was the first naval victory by the Continental Navy against the British during the Revolution. It sank the Serapis which Jones then boarded and commandeered as the Bonhomme Richard was fatally damaged during the battle. It was the battle where Jones uttered the famous saying "I have not yet begun to fight" when ordered to surrender by the British captain. It was an extremely important event as it showed the Continental Navy, small as it was, was a force that could take on the powerful British fleet. Of course, it was the help of the French fleet under Admiral de Grasse that really made a huge difference. But without Jones' defeat of the Serapis, the French may not have come to the Americans aid when they did.

Since this keeps coming up -- As a maybe 10-year-old kid, I once got a model of this ship from my Dad. (Actually, he probably got it as a promotional gift or something at work -- it's not something he would have actually bought for me.)

I started on it, thinking it might be a snap-together type like I was familiar with. Then I looked at the instructions -- the first step was to use a scissors to cut some complicated rigging and I didn't get how to do it. Everything went right back in the box and it was never opened again. Oddly enough, nowadays I'd probably welcome (and understand) that sort of challenge.
