Cont: The Trump Presidency: Part 23

Exactly ! That's why the timing of any such announcement is crucial. It would have to be early enough to positively affect President Trump's approval rating (for example the morning of the election would be too late) but not so early that reality has a chance to sink in. My gut would say a grand announcement and possibly a televised Presidential message on all networks to the American people to spread the good news one or two weeks before the election.

He's not going to win on the announcement of a vaccine.

Ain't gonna happen. The hospitals are starting to overflow now. Like clockwork, the death rate is climbing now.

Trump is a disaster. He simply can't recover in time.

60% of the electorate. He has the support of 85%+ of the GOP.

If the middle doesn't turn out to vote, or votes for a party other than the Democrats then it doesn't matter so much.

Even GW didn't have 60% of the electorate. I don't know where you are getting the 60% from.

Trump won in 2016 by the skin of his teeth and some skillful marketing in some key states. That's not going to happen in 2020.

I wasn't thinking about the stock market, more that there'll be some pretty spectacular looking monthly economic and job numbers as the US claws its way out of the recession. The fact that it'll still be well behind where it was won't matter to some people when they see "5% growth" headlines.

Whole sectors of the economy are in big trouble. Tourism, travel, restaurants and entertainment, sports, hotels, ....

Until we get a vaccine, the economy is not going to "recover".

You need to brush up on your reading comprehension, I'm saying that there are 60% who don't view President Trump favourability but the rabidly loyal 40% may be enough to see him reelected if enough of the rest can't vote, choose not to vote, or vote for a third party.

The economy is already "recovering", millions of jobs have been "added" (or more accurately returned as parts of the economy open up). The fact that there are still millions more out of work than there were is neither here there as far as the GOP spin machine is concerned.

They can claim that President Trump has created more jobs more quickly than any president in recent history - ignoring the minor detail that far more jobs were lost than have been gained.

Enough people may be ignorant, stupid or distracted enough to take the news at face value and conclude that he's an economic genius. After all that's a major part of why he was elected.

Yes, and though it's counterintuitive, the worse the situation is when the announcement is made, the more willing people may be to believe it.

I expect something more like “Because the extreme left cares more about cows than people, they want to replace beef with human flesh. They are already test marketing Soylent Green.”

That would be an interesting reversal from their continual harping on how Democrats want to kill your cows as spelled out in the Green New Deal, but hardly unprecedented.

Looks like they're ramping up for a pre-election "President Trump has cured Covid-19" announcement.

On Wednesday we reported on positive signs about the viability of a coronavirus vaccine, produced by US pharmaceutical company Moderna.

Following that news, the country's leading expert on infectious diseases has predicted the US should have a coronavirus vaccine by the end of the year.

"I feel good about the projected timetable," Dr. Anthony Fauci told Reuters news agency.

If the US electorate believe it, then he'll be reelected with a thumping EC majority and maybe even a popular vote majority. :(

When people realise that it'll take months, if not years, to roll out the vaccine and that many people will be unable to afford it and so the mismanagement of Covid-19 continues for the whole of President Trump's second term, it'll be too late. :(

It's a stupid move to run on the hope for a Vaccine:

for one, plenty of MAGAs are skeptical of vaccines.

But more importantly, he has to convince voters that he will quickly and efficiently get the vaccine to those who need it and Biden wouldn't.

It's not like a tax cut that Republicans will and Democrats won't pass.

And still be Obama's fault.

It's not the hope of a vaccine, the announcement (if and when it comes) will be the certainty of the vaccine (regardless of the truth behind it).

For the MAGA crowd, they will simply take the "President Trump has fixed Covid-19" at face value regardless of their personal feelings regarding vaccines.

But more importantly, he has to convince voters that he will quickly and efficiently get the vaccine to those who need it and Biden wouldn't.

It's not like a tax cut that Republicans will and Democrats won't pass.

It's not about actually distributing a vaccine and protecting the population, it's about being able to declare victory in a war, and take personal credit for that victory. He just has to convince enough voters of that.

There are enough low information voters out there who will hear "Vaccine is available" and assume that they'll be getting one in a few days or weeks and won't bother to investigate how long it'll likely take to get it because that's hard work and a bit of a buzzkill about the good news.

I very much doubt that anyone would give Trump credit for presiding over the release of the vaccine: people who think that he helped get it developed faster also think that in his spare time he is fighting MS-13 as a masked vigilante.

I'm sure almost 40% of the electorate would believe he developed the vaccine himself.

And a good portion hear "vaccine" and are going to completely freak out. Even if a vaccine is a success elsewhere it is not going to do well here. Foxnews will dig up swine flu vaccine horror stories.

I note that the Bitcoin Twitter hack seems to have been targeted at President Trump's political and personal opponents:

Billionaires Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates are among many prominent US figures targeted by hackers on Twitter in an apparent Bitcoin scam.

The official accounts of Barack Obama, Joe Biden and Kanye West also requested donations in the cryptocurrency.

Whilst I don't think that this was orchestrated by the Trump Campaign or even requested or endorsed by the President or GOP, might it have been carried out by groups and/or countries for whom the reelection of President Trump would be beneficial ?

Not if vaccination is being proposed by a GOP President.

Vaccination is only a problem if it is being forced on you by a liberal elitist like Barack Obama, not when it's being asked of you by an anti-elitist man of the people like Donald Trump or George W Bush ;)
