The existence of Flat Earthers in the 21st century must be making Jean Picard* spin in his grave. How he managed to establish the position of 2 points 1 degree apart, and measure the distance between them with such accuracy back in those days, blows my mind.


* In the 17th century Picard calculated the circumference of the World by measuring the length of one degree along the meridian arc in France. He was out by only 0.44%.

It’s the reason why science degree course take so long. The first month is taken up with learning about the science, the next 3 years 11 months are learning about what knowledge you have to now suppress and deny knowing for the rest of your life.

It occurs to me that the spin of the Earth, and the spin rate, could be demonstrated by measuring the difference in weight of a mass at different places. The weight would be least on the Equator (because of centripetal acceleration) and greatest on the poles.

Hell a sunset does a great job at disproving their preferred model as the sun should go out while above the "fictitious" horizon as its lampshade occludes it.

Thank you. I managed to get all of his (I think) over the weekend.
I appreciate his putting the flerfs on blast instead of using the kid gloves like they were children. That's the one thing I don't like about Dan but that's his way so I roll with it.

But Dave even calls out Kent Hovind on bio/evo (unlike Dan, Catz et al.)... thank you, thank you, what an arrogant, bible thumping prick that man is. :(
Not interested in many/most of Dave's vids but I like his demeanor and enthusiasm.

Absolutely. Also, by the usual flat earth (at least youtube flat earther) model, the angular diameter of the sun and moon should be much larger at noon than near sunrise or sunset. Flat earthers completely fail to account for what we can observe on a daily basis, even without taking any measurements. As soon as you bring any kind of instrumentation into it, it falls apart completely.

Uhhh... the shade has magic properties; the light obeys different physical principals; etc. etc. It's nonsensical.
I still highly prefer the Southern Celestial Pole conundrum. How can EVERYONE far south of the equator look south and see it at the same time? Show me that on an FE map. Derp.
I'll refrerence Prof Dave from one of his vids blasting Globebusters... no single FE model agrees with all known observations, and no two disparate ones agree with each other. Fail. Hard fail. It honestly SHOULD be that simple.
I think he's pretty new (a year or less) at the flerfs and he's already tired of their BS. I don't blame him.

Interesting observation that flat earthers tend to be conspiracy folk generally. I have to admit to a glimmer of conspiracy thought a few years ago, in relation to the Moon landing. Some of the astronauts were religious and did bang on about seeing God's hand in it, when looking back at Earth, which put my teeth on edge and nudge a prejudice in my mind.

As I observed an astronaut jumping off the ladder on the landing module, and landing on the Moon's surface I thought: "Hey, that's to fast!" When I measured the time and did the calculation for acceleration under Moon's gravity I found it to be correct after all. :o

Glad you liked it. At times I find the psychology behind such beliefs a rather more interesting subject to examine.

Generally yes is right. With that being true the real underlying cause is that such a belief however grossly wrong (stated by these flat Earthers) affirms their deeply rooted need to know humanity in general and they themselves specifically have a special purpose in this universe. Contrast that to my own perspective which is, we humans are the steel ball in the pinball game careening through life as best we can.

ETA: Yes, they want to feel special in some way, whether in a religious/theist sense, or by being "in the know" so they aren't fooled about a conspiracy, or whatever. I suspect that for many who are sincere in what they say, this is in compensation for some perceived or unconscious inadequacy.

Yes I hear this sentiment from my religious extended family. My nephew feels so special he chats to God/Jesus (haven't heard of him chatting to The Holy Ghost), on a regular basis. Rejects evolution, of course, but seems cool with the idea of us living on a planet in a universe. The eyes seem to glaze over when I point out how large and old the universe is, compared to our tiny planet, and our tiny bit of history on it.
