God, that's the way my DI's chewed me out when I screwed up in Basic Training (excpet my DI threw in some NSFW language).
We have not seen anything like this for a long time.
i think what held Matthis back was his concern about the military keeing out of politics, but it says something he flet he had to speak out.

he has to be careful becuase of the US tradition of the Military not getting involved with politics.

At least he had second thoughts about it. It may be a lie but calibrated to the Trump Whitehouse scale of veracity it scores as a 10 in truthfulness.

Again, I can only speak for myself and the department and officers I worked with.

But for most of my time, I was a Field Training Officer. We took the rookies coming out of the Academy and showed them the ropes, giving them a chance to work all 3 shifts and all 3 areas. I tried to be “by the book” and not diverge from the extensive training they had at the Academy. Most of the other FTO’s did as well.

As an aside, Karen and I are revisiting Hill Street Blues, a cop show that was popular when I was an officer. I find it quite realistic on many levels. And, yes, there’s a Lieutenant Norman Buntz in the show who personifies what you’re talking about. I’m sure they exist. But most cops I worked with tried to do their best to just get the job done and go home alive, without mistreating, choking or killing anyone, black, white or other.

I'm sure they do, but most of them not trying to kill anyone really doesn't help much at all.

Picture this: say you need surgery. Most of the surgeons at your hospital will try to do their best to get you home alive and healthy. But there may be some bad apples who don't care if you live or die, or in fact would actively prefer if patients of your skin color never woke up at all.

No, you can't choose your doctor.
No, you can't request their job histories or performance reviews.
No, you can't have our records to know how many patients have died in our care.
No, negligently killing you will not get them fired or charged with anything unless there's literally a nationwide protest about it.

But trust me, most of the surgeons you may be assigned are perfectly wonderful people who don't want to kill you at all, and Doctor Training explicitly emphasizes the role of not letting people die while performing surgery.

Are you... reassured?
