Apparently he was already on the outs with Trump for not being adequately fawning. One example was that Esper once, when asked in an interview what it was like to work with Trump, said that it was like working for any boss, one adjusts. Apparently Trump was furious that Esper didn’t state that it was like working for God, but only better.

You are disregarding the reality that the elected figure is the person tasked with managing the response(es) to the problem(s) giving the citizen pause.

To take comfort from that figure when they project competence, and to be concerned when the figure projects incompetence, is exceedingly rational.

Would you go into surgery by choice without first speaking with the surgeon?

Caring what someone projects is childish.

ETA: but if we were discussing someone who I follow who leads my chain of command, that would be one thing. I'm not in the chain of command of any politicians. No president is "my president." Except for that window when Bush actually was.

His hardcore supporters will swallow it, but any halfway rational human will see it for what it was - Trump.

Maybe they could find the guy at a rally that Trump called "my African-American". He could be on a leash somewhere in the WH basement.

After using Military Police against the peaceful protesters in Lafayette Square?

I think he just realized that he is already due for a Court Martial under any sane Administration, and hopes to safe his neck.

No; Esper, another supposed "Adult in the Room" has utterly failed the US and its Armed Forces.
