That was weird. What we he expecting a blitz from the Luftwaffe? An attack from the Jurassic Park T-Rex? That the protestors would just forget where the White House was?
Maybe a security precaution, that it's much harder for people outside who may have firearms to see people inside the White House when the lights are out?

By the way, the illustration Øverbye used for his list that I linked to above is also quite powerful.

Not firearms. If you have night vision, and your opponent does not, the WH security has a huge advantage if people breach the fences and enter the grounds.

One 'change' from the Rodney King episode was the retirement of LAPD police chief Daryl Gates. He was the one who 'explained,' about the officers who beat up Rodney King (broken bones and teeth, skull fracture, permanent brain damage) "They were trying to help him."

Fox News host Laura Ingraham attempted to explain to African-Americans on Thursday night that President Donald Trump can empathize with inequality and police brutality due to his “own experience” with federal investigators during the Russia probe.

Wow, when the privilege runs so deep...

"Dear black people, Trump can empathize with you because OBAMAGATE!!!"

I've reported the long "what is murder" derail, which has nothing to do with Trump.

Back on topic, I'm giving him a pass on the bunker thing. That was Secret Service doing their jobs and being very careful, not his idea.

Are the bikers already there to protect him?

Going back in history, the storming of the Bastille kicked off the French Revolution.

Racial clashes during the Civil Rights movement were instrumental in getting the Civil Rights Act in the United States. However, it might be going out on a limb to call them riots.

Civil unrest in Winnipeg in 1919 was an important turning point in the Labour movement in Canada: a major confrontation during a general strike shifted public opinion toward the protestors and away from the establishment

The Stonewall Riots [Wikipedia] in 1969 are largely seen as a turning point for LGBT people in the United States.

The 2011 Vancouver Stanley Cup riot, ignited by the Vancouver Canucks losing the Stanley Cup series to the Boston Bruins, has (probably) led to improved procedures for cities across North America for handling large and unruly crowds in the aftermath of a sporting event.

The Arab Spring caused some changes, but I can't say if they were permanent or for the better.

I've given some examples above, ones that I can recall from memory, and Giordano has mentioned the Birmingham Riots. I won't ask you to do my homework for me, so if you want additional examples I'll need to do some digging.

Sadly that one, and the riots in Los Angeles after the police officers were acquitted in the beating of Rodney King probably did not cause long lasting change.

Reinforcing negative stereotypes is a real danger any time something big hits the news, be it a terrorist attack, a mass shooting, an extrajudicial killing, or a riot.

I think the above examples show that, at times, civil disturbances which often include violence against individuals, vandalism against infrastructure, and looting—all aspects of a riot—can indeed cause changes for the better. They might be in the minority, but as far as I'm concerned it can happen.

Please avoid the temptation to special plead your way out of every example presented by me and others. If you do so you risk getting swamped with examples.

I've generally enjoyed your posts which I find thoughtful and informative. I read this post with interest and an open mind until I got to that last paragraph. What a disappointment. This is an attempt to stop any response by calling whatever I may say "special pleading". This is, in effect, you saying "I've had my say, but I'm dismissing anything you have to say before you even say it." Ok. I won't bother.

Quite possible.
Given that it has been two decades since the bulletproof glass was replaced by really, really bulletproof glass, I’d be surprised.
But it is not beyond the realm of the possible.

And it is real easy for him to make that declaration. In fact, he could actually make the SS look good in this regard.

Wait, how isn't this politically motivated? Do the police not represent the judicial branch? Protesters are essentially advocating for reform and against misconduct and corruption. Is that not a political motivation? Misconduct and corruption negatively affects everyone but effect blacks disproportionately. There is an overarching motivation for racial reconciliation but the greater cause is a political one (to reduce corruption and misconduct).

I see your point and acknowledge it. I just had to look at it from a broader perspective.

It’s only natural that he would expect them to. He probably would himself.

Some stories imply it was a USSS decision and not POTUS’s.

Trump Tweets
Sleep Joe Biden’s people are so Radical Left that they are working to get the Anarchists out of jail, and probably more. Joe doesn’t know anything about it, he is clueless, but they will be the real power, not Joe. They will be calling the shots! Big tax increases for all, Plus!

This was definitely all Trump. The lies, personal attacks and ending with a totally unrelated topic out of left field is evidence of that.

ETA:
WASHINGTON (REUTERS, AFP) - Campaign staff for Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden are advertising their donations to a group that pays bail fees in Minneapolis after the city's police jailed people protesting the killing of a black man by a white police officer.
At least 13 Biden campaign staff members posted on Twitter on Friday and Saturday (May 29 and 30) that they made donations to the Minnesota Freedom Fund, which opposes the practice of cash bail, or making people pay to avoid pre-trial imprisonment.
The group uses donations to pay bail fees in Minneapolis

That explains why Trump is demanding police step up its brutality, after speaking to his Russian handler.

No, stop, don't give him a pass for this. Trump never does anything himself, that's part of the problem.

Look at the Lincoln Project ad posted above. Was Trump the one waving the confederate flags? No. So does he get a "pass" for that? Also no. He's created the environment in which people wave flags for him, so he can dodge the responsibility himself.

And hiding in the bunker is the same - he created the conditions that required the Secrete Service to make this call. And he knew they would make this call, because making calls like that is literally their job. He gets to act tough while rage-tweeting about how many dogs&weapons he can bring to bear on the protestors, all the while safe in the knowledge that the real tough guys surrounding him will cover his ass. So he doesn't get a pass for that either.
