Wishful thinking, perhaps, but some have paid the price. Some are in jail. Some have become memes, or jokes. Remember Spicer hiding in the bushes? Some have had to fall on their swords: Like the acting Navy Secretary, who did what he KNEW Trump wanted but then made Trump look bad in the process. And who's ever going to take Bill Barr seriously again?
Yes, he can fire them if he wanted to.
A normal president would be very happy to have such competent and widely regarded doctors heading the task force. But Trump, as we all know, is not a normal president. That people trust them, especially Fauci, far more than they trust him could trigger Trump to do something stupid. His NPD is...to use words Trump favors...'strong','very powerful'.
I think that they both are in civil servant positions that do not allow Trump to directly fire them. But he can marginalize them easily enough. Or otherwise make their lives hell.

Oh, I don't know. There's always the example of Nixon's AG John Mitchell, who wound up in prison, or W. Bush's first AG John Ashcroft, who got the job due to being defeated for the Senate by a dead guy and whose most famous act was covering up a statue of Justice because it had bare boobs.Bill Barr has certainly lowered the bar for Attorneys General.
I actually feel kind of bad for those two. They seem to be trying to inject a modicum of sanity while not getting fired and losing the modicum of influence they have.Yeah! Better that two “respected” doctors sit quietly while a moron spouts medical nonsense that some other morons are bound to take seriously.

The White House says the media has "irresponsibly" taken President Donald Trump's comments on injecting disinfectant into the human body to treat coronavirus "out of context".
From that link:
Perhaps the White House could tell us what context *should* be used to understand Trump's comment.
And they also get a lot of their medications by mail. Maybe this will be the straw that wakes the Trumpers up.

That's so worn out that even the words on my monitor are faded.
He doesn’t attend the task force meetings.
https://www.politico.com/news/2020/04/24/trump-biden-china-debt-205475Donald Trump is warning “China will own the United States” if Joe Biden is elected president.
But Trump himself is tens of millions of dollars in debt to China: In 2012, his real estate partner refinanced one of Trump’s most prized New York buildings for almost $1 billion. The debt includes $211 million from the state-owned Bank of China — its first loan of this kind in the U.S. — which matures in the middle of what could be Trump’s second term, financial records show.
