Well, this ain't no good...

17 bodies found in New Jersey Nursing home and dozens more infected...

There's something similar going on in Calif.

There's a lot of reports that nursing home COVID-19 deaths are being missed due to lack of testing confirming the virus.

Officials have also cautioned that coronavirus-related death figures are likely an undercount due to people dying at home or in nursing homes who were never tested for the virus.

I'd look for another source.

April 15 (Reuters) - U.S. coronavirus deaths increased by a record number for the second day in a row, rising by at least 2,371 on Wednesday to top 30,800, according to a Reuters tally, as states spared the worst of the pandemic mulled a partial lifting of restrictions on business and social life by May 1.

This report is dated about 6 hours ago so it would be a bit higher now depending on sources. Johns Hopkins is the closest to real time AFAIK. They currently report 24492.

Not sure what the discrepancy at Reuters is from.

Edited: The numbers I posted were from Italy. USA deaths are 30844 at Johns Hopkins

Interesting. Johns Hopkins posts 30844 deaths, The last WHO report was 23476. It's also a day behind. Still, quite a discrepancy. WHO notes that their numbers are reported by a country's authority. Johns Hopkins accumulates data from multiple sources. They log their data and geo location at github.

Let's rag on China's numbers. :)

Most Chinese wet markets are not as exotic or inherently evil as many think:
https://www.cnn.com/2020/04/14/asia/china-wet-market-coronavirus-intl-hnk/index.html

Most of what is offered is what one would find in a typical butcher shop or fish market and does not involve exotic animals. Also only some have live animals.

So China hopes to reopen these with stricter limitations. But the concern is corruption or fraud.

Regional MA media have been reporting this evening on tests performed at a Boston homeless shelter.

There's a possibility they might be pre-symptomatic, so I hope they check on that angle - that's a very high number.

Thanks for noticing that post. I'd missed it. The testing was done a week and a half ago so there should be quite a number of symptomatic people by now few details of follow up. Only asymptomatic at the time.

Incredible! CDC is now looking into it and more testing is scheduled. Some strain that causes few if any symptoms? The ones that were positive have been isolated and apparently one was hospitalized. Or is it possible they were all exposed just a few days earlier at the same time?

This is extremely interesting and could be either good news or bad. Worth following.

I have (perhaps irrationally) been worried that the testing of drugs has been slowed because of studies often being limited to a single hospital. An individual hospital might have a limited number of patients who are both willing and able (not on a bunch of other medications, not so sick that an adverse reaction would kill them) at a given time so that it is taking months before enough pass through the hospital to constitute a sufficient number to get statistically significant results. I hope that I'm wrong (or moronically impatient).
Well in the UK there are UK wide trials that every hospital can contribute to. There are smaller trials as well. The intent is that every patient should be offered the opportunity to participate in a trial.

This could be a Brit<>US thing, as to my British eyes, it would be weirder if they had deliberately looked for a stock photo of a black nurse.

I'm British. I wonder why they used a stock photo at all, rather than a picture of her like other media outlets have. This one, for example, which was the first article a search turned up.

She's a nurse, her ethnicity is utterly irrelevant to the story.

Well, it is and it isn't. The fact that the NHS is staffed in large part by immigrants and ethnic minorities who have been impacted by immigration laws and the like is directly relevant to the crisis of the moment. Putting a picture of a white nurse on a story of a black nurse helps to bury that and to minimise the role that immigrants and ethnic minorities play.

I won't go in to this more, as this thread is supposed to be politics-free, but these things, in aggregate, aren't insignificant.

And, of course, it's odd to pay tribute to someone by posting a picture of someone else entirely, in a way that erases a part of who that person is. Rather than posting a picture of, you know, her.

Yeah, that's been at the back of mind all along the territory issue - we know there are two strains. Are they being spread in parallel? One group spread by Chinese from Wuhan that isn't so deadly, and another from the skifields, which is.

That would certainly go with the earlier, but less-virulent, infections in Japan, Hawaii, California, Canada, Aussie & NZ.

I just so wish we had a decent and freely-available immunological test, and I'd be first to volunteer - I've had a mild suspicion since February that I've had it when I had a very unusual virus that shared some symptoms with Covid.

There's hundreds of strains. Basically every sample is different. And they are mixed quite well, basically every country has infections from several different distant countries. There is nothing like 'this country has this strain', that is simply nonsense.

Coronavirus: No UK lockdown exit until vaccine found, says Tory minister Nadine Dorries

The minister for patient safety, suicide prevention and mental health tweeted that until a Covid-19 vaccine is developed and made available to the public, society will have to “adapt” to a “full lockdown”.
“Journalists should stop asking about an ‘exit strategy’. There is only one way we can ‘exit’ full lockdown and that is when we have a vaccine.
