I've seen the claim in a couple of places that a cost to the US economy of $100 million leads to 1 additional death due to more people being forced into poverty.

But then you need to subtract the number of people who aren't dying as a result of air pollution drop and road death reduction.

It's not as simple as it appears.

Yep! Well done you Antipodeans!

You're doing a great job!

Yeah, so far, so good, and don't forget South Africa, because they're doing as well in far more trying circumstances.

We've certainly proved the shut down works, but with winter fast approaching, I'll be waiting to see if it busts out again once restrictions are eased.

I'm posting when I'm only through page 59 of 62, but in case someone hasn't pointed it out already in the interim, we will probably never know the true death counts in many areas, as a number of places don't test deaths at home, and therefore don't count them. Even if you're hospitalized, if you die before testing, they aren't bothering to test.

By many areas, I don't mean struggling countries in the usual sense, I mean the UK https://twitter.com/laineydoyle/status/1249127908876128259 and NYC.

Note his effusive praise for the NHS doctors and nurses who he says saved his life. Gee, it woulid be just awful if the U.S. had a system like that.

As critical as i have been of our response, if I have to pick which is more likely to save my life?

For the UK there is no requirement to test; if the certifying doctor thinks it is probable Covid-19 then this is what can be put on the death certificate. This will appear on ONS reports in due course but there is about a two week delay in reporting of registered deaths which will include hospital and community deaths.

Just to emphasise for our US readers, the prime minister was in the NHS hospital, just the same as anyone else in the UK might be. (OK he might be in a single room, but the care would otherwise be identical to any other person.)

This general caveat has been raised many times in the life of this and its ancestor threads.

Among other things, reports of the numbers of Covid-19 deaths, from different places, are not strictly comparable (many examples, perhaps among the more confusing: died of heart failure due to Covid-19, cf died of pneumonia whether Covid-19 related or not not noted).

One of the earliest that I recall is SCMP articles based on social media (fairly quickly censored) from Wuhan, saying an aged parent had died of what was surely Covid-19 and whose body was quickly cremated with a cause of death officially recorded as something other than Covid-19.

It will likely be years before robust estimates of Covid-19 deaths become available.

Right now it seems that the JHU Worldmeter and WHO numbers are likely underestimates.

What's the rationale behind countries talking of reducing lockdown restrictions? Are there models suggesting it's a good plan? Isn't it likely to result in a resurgence of cases?

Although it could just be a reporting anomaly due to the Easter holiday, today's numbers are way down for the US. I pay particular attention to my home state of Michigan, and you have to go back to March 26 to find a lower number than today's number of new cases.

I have a suspicion that part of it is a reporting issue, and we'll see higher numbers tomorrow, but the trend has definitely been down.

I don't have any trouble believing and accepting that the Prime Minister might get a little more personal attention and closer monitoring than the average lorry driver. The point is that anybody anywhere in the country can get competent medical care without worrying about the cost. Not only are the costs a primary concern in the U.S., even for people with good insurance, but the quality varies enormously, depending on who's running the hospital and where it is.

The swedish numbers are lagging aswell. The true numbers will come by tuesday according to our state epidemiologist.

Its traditation for people in Sweden to travel north and go skiing during easter. But our government have strongly recommended not to do such trips this year. I guess not everyone has been listening though...
