I note the discussion about concealed deaths. Certainly that is not happening in the UK there is no pressure not to put covid-19 as a cause of death if the certifying doctor wants to. Also the government publishes weekly mortality figures and compares them to previous years. Some may find it interesting to see the 'excess mortality' associated with flu. It is clear that in the UK there is no noticeable increase in deaths above expected as yet.

There has been discussion about excess attributable mortality, there is a link in the document to a detailed description of the Euro algorithm if you are interested.

Dept of health have said that without family permission the hospitals can't release cause of death information so figures might not be right.

I'm going to class that as more evidence that closing schools helps a lot.

There doesn't seem to be any other reason why Japan is behind all of the countries to which Covid-19 arrived much later than Japan.

The new school year starts in April here. As far as I know, schools are planning to reopen with the new school year. Maybe that will change, but it remains to be seen.

Why is it that we always know exact numbers of those dead and injured in a terrorist attack?
No one asks family in that instance even though many die in hospital. Those numbers aren't even as important as a pandemic.

I find that hard to believe. Maybe there are personal types of information that can’t be released. Or maybe they really can’t release without approval although I would have to think in the midst of this outbreak few would not agree.

I don't know about them, but the reason that I returned to China last week was that I was worried about flights being cancelled and not being able to return if I waited any longer.

Turns out it was a good move as as of today foreigners aren't allowed back in to the country, even those of us with valid visas.

No because the increase in infections is partly because of increased testing.
I expect in the long run the death rate in the US to increase dramatically. I believe it will have little to do with the health care system.

Well don't keep us waiting. What do you believe it will have to do with?

Serious underlying medical conditions

Per the (US) CDC, the serious underlying medical conditions which might make you at higher risk "for severe illness from COVID-19" (my emphasis):

* People with chronic lung disease
* (people with) moderate to severe asthma
* People who have serious heart conditions
* People who are immunocompromised including cancer treatment
* People of any age with severe obesity (body mass index [BMI] >40)
* (people with) certain underlying medical conditions, particularly if not well controlled, such as those with diabetes, renal failure, or liver disease

And re immunocompromised: "Many conditions can cause a person to be immunocompromised, including cancer treatment, smoking, bone marrow or organ transplantation, immune deficiencies, poorly controlled HIV or AIDS, and prolonged use of corticosteroids and other immune weakening medications".

Irrespective of your age, you "might die anyway" (to quote an ISF member, in some ancestor thread to this) if you have one (or more) of those. For example, a "serious heart condition".

However, for many others, you probably wouldn't "die anyway" but for covid-19, at least not within three months or so. For example, diabetes.

Were you tested and quarantined on arrival?

In a U.S. state with a Louisiana trajectory, about a week behind.

Two cities/metros have shelter in place. No statewide action.

First few days ok, but wearing off fast.

Now it's Saturday. People shopping up a storm in here. Kids, dogs, it's a carnival.

My son who recently returned to Australia from London has just been diagnosed with the virus.

Fortunately he has been in complete isolation since his return.

Oh no! Sorry to hear that. I hope he makes a full and speedy recovery.

Yeah, I think Abe might be having a rethink.

It is funny because when he closed the schools, a lot of people freaked out and said what the **** is this guy doing?!?

Now that he is thinking of reopening them, many of the same people are freaking out and saying what the **** is this guy doing?!?

I think it is wise to keep them closed, and I expect that whatever happens, I am not sending my son to kindergarten if it reopens in early April.

Were you tested and quarantined on arrival?

I believe Roborama said he was, and he explained the process in some earlier posts.

Sometimes the numbers are wrong

The John Hopkins tracking site had the following a few minutes ago:
- NSW Australia, 212 deaths
- Victoria Australia, 111 deaths
(etc).

Yet the official Australian government website gives only 14 deaths for the whole country (“as at 3.00pm on 28 March”).

I guess the JH numbers will be adjusted before too long ...

That is simply not true. It may be SOP to inform family before updating the statistics but that is a policy not a legal requirement.

Which "dept of health?" Because a cause of death by itself (e.g., "we have had a death caused by bacterial pneumonia today") is not protected medical information and health departments can require hospitals to report such information to them when there is a public health concern.

For England.
