The Trump Presidency: Part 20

....

There hasn't been one single documented case of anyone needing a ventilator and one not being available. That may, and probably will, change. But 30 to 40K? Even I think that's a high number. Remember that the patient either recovers or dies thus freeing up a ventilator for someone else. I don't think anyone actually believes Cuomo in this case but none will say so because "Trump".....
:jaw-dropp

A NY ED doc was speaking out yesterday, usually people who need ventilators only need them for a few days. People with COVID are staying on the ventilators for 2 weeks or more.

You think the need for ventilators is an exaggeration? That's some serious denial.

As is this:

By the way, there's another new looming crisis that anyone can see coming.

How bad will it be? That's the kind of thing you need more data for. The President of the United States could get that data, so I hope he has, and that his lack of visible action means that he has evaluated the data and the answers from the team of experts assembled, and concluded that it will not cause the type of crisis that requires active intervention now.

Sooner or later, the rate of infection among cashiers, food handlers, truckers, and production workers at food plants will reach a level where the remaining workers decide it isn't worth the risk to show up to work. The result would be that our problems got a whole lot worse than anything we are dealing with now.

A few weeks ago, I would have dismissed that sort of talk as sensationalism. On the other hand, three weeks aog, when I couldn't get toilet paper at Costco, I said that that situation would be resolved within a week. I was obviously wrong, and there is obviously a problem.

Is the country prepared? Has the government carefully evaluated the problem and concluded it's not an issue? There's simply no way for you and I, sitting out here in the world, to know the answer to those questions, but I have zero confidence that the guy at the helm has even thought of it.
There's already a serious shortage of health care workers.

To be fair, we were crying wolf because there was a wolf. It's just that fewer people cared until the crisis was too big to ignore.

When this is over, go back and look at all the wolf crying that was more valid than you had maybe realized.

FWIW: I know you live on the right side of the aisle, but I've never felt you were in the Trump apologist crowd.

CPAP doesn't deliver oxygen.
You can add oxygen. It doesn't deliver a breath.

As a user of CPAP, and someone who’s administered rescue breathing to patients via bag-valve mask, I confirm this. CPAP delivers room air at a little extra pressure for people who are breathing on their own. (I guess you could add oxygen; I’ve never thought about it.).

A ventilator does the work of breathing for a patient who can’t, at an elevated oxygen level.

I've seen brief mention of articles talking about cannibalizing CPAP machines and parts and turning them into ventilators, as opposed to just using a CPAP as a ventilator replacement.

No idea if this would "work". I put "work" in quotes, because there are a lot of things that are better than nothing, but not as good as the right tool for the job. Would the souped-up CPAP be better than nothing? Don't know. Not my department.

Hmm. On the Ventilator front, there's some good news - and some confusion.

On the GM/Ventec side -

GM was growing exasperated with the Trump administration because it had done the work to secure suppliers for the 700 components needed to make ventilators. The automaker had even started hiring because the 300 workers on staff in Kokomo won’t be enough to handle the proposed volume, a person familiar with the situation said.

But the companies were waiting on the federal government to decide how many machines it will need, how many producers it will hire and, by extension, how much it will pay Ventec.

Originally, the two manufacturers were talking about $250 million that would go to the Seattle-based company and its components suppliers to get production moving, said people familiar with the matter, who asked not to be identified because the deliberations were private.

GM and Ventec have opted to go ahead with building ventilators without a federal contract and will sell to buyers regardless.

GM and Ventec said they’re poised to deliver the first ventilators in April and ramp up manufacturing capacity to more than 10,000 a month. GM will deploy about 1,000 workers for the effort, and the two companies said they have the infrastructure and capability to boost production more, depending on the needs of the federal government.

So... Okay!

On the Trump side, it looks like Trump's claiming that he's actually invoked the DPA, finally, albeit only for GM and for this thing that seems to be happening anyways, but had been pointedly waiting on the White House to finish up their end of things at that point?

Err... Umm...

The vile one speaks: "I want them to be appreciative." What a tool.

Sir, this is what the on/off button on the TV is for.

My net search skills are somewhat lacking.
May I have a context for the quote?

found it.
Complete dickhead.
Does a week go by that this guy does not exhibit over-the-top symptoms of a mental disorder?

MORE ETA
I sincerely hope history accurately portrays the **** heads in the Senate who stood behind this certifiable nut case.

From the other thread.

A week ago I was, perhaps rightfully, criticized for posting a tweet about respirators being shared between patients without adequately vetting it.

That has apparently come to pass, or is at least being experimented with:

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-usa-ventilators-idUSKBN21D3M1

Also mentioned on last night’s NBC Nightly News.
Even if you want to excuse this with another claim there are ventilators for everyone that wants one, just imagine what is going to happen in another week 24 hours.
