2019-nCoV / Corona virus Pt 2

However, this being the SMMT section of the ISF, shouldn’t we be discussing science?

I’m sure we can leave hope to whatever it is that Pence does instead of using the scientific method ...
Discussing science is good, but when trying to predict the future some speculation is necessarily involved.

Australian Grand Prix is cancelled.

There's a list somewhere of all the global events that have been cancelled, and rightfully so imo.

I don't get the PGA's stance on this. They're going on with tournaments but after today there'll be no spectators for the next few weeks..... until the Masters.

Seems like they're setting themselves up for a bit of a PR nightmare.

Evidence for that claim?

No. The same thing was covered quite a few pages ago, and this is the giveaway:

That is complete nonsense. Covid is spread by sticking the viruses in your mouth/nose/eyes and drinking water won't make any difference at all.

If you've got it, drink like a fish, though. The fact that people with bad kidneys are dropping like flies could mean flushing helps.

No, but anecdotal evidence suggests it's a possibility. The Covid-19 map shows by far the strongest growth in countries that are cold right now, and far slower growth in countries that are warmer and more humid.

Compare Australia's case growth compared to Italy, and Aussie had 4 cases before Italy had any.

Time will tell, but I think there's still hope.

Except for countries heading into winter... (like mine)

Who were immediately quarantined on arrival into the country.

I'm pretty sure that's the difference.

We knew that those people had the virus and we isolated them early.

It took a long time before we started getting person to person infections because of the quarantine measures (as weak as they were, they're better than nothing).

As far as I can tell, Italy didn't react in time to slow the infection rate.

And during the time since those people were quarantined there haven’t been more people coming into Australia unknowingly with the virus.

On the news last night, it was remarked that Australia has processed more Coronavirus tests that the USA.

I haven't been able to track down the source that sparked this remark, but the number of people tested was something like 5,000.

Given our population (approximately 25 million people), I'm hoping that this is not true, because it would indicate that the USA has really dropped the ball.

The only figures I can find for the USA suggest approximately 1,000 people tested two weeks ago. So I'm hoping that it was just a temporary statistical anomaly that was reported.

Excellent piece here about the problem USA (and other countries) will face when the disease hits prison populations: https://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/o...quipped-deal-coronavirus-200310075911589.html
And I can tell you that nothing is being done in English prisons. They are not changing any routines, they do not have plans on how to quarantine individuals, faulty hand sanitizer dispensers (for instance in the processing room for new prisoners) are still not being fixed or replaced. They don't even have contingency plans to cope for 20% of the workforce being sick at the same time. That 20% figure is of course the government's own figure.

I have said that it is almost as if they are willing to lose a few percentage of prisoners, would help the over crowding.

Fairly unrelated question but it deals with a doomsday scenario. Didn’t the Australian Grand Prix play a part in the novel “On the Beach “

Yes, but only because Australia was the last country standing, so the locals held a 'Grand Prix'.

It's been a long time since I read it, but I recall one of the lead characters taking steps to preserve his racing car (Filling the cylinders with oil IIRC) before he committed suicide, with his government - issued suicide pill.

(It was a very bleak book).

Thanks.

Agreed.

But, to turn the contrast waaaaay up .... we all hope a civilization ending comet or asteroid will not impact the Earth in our, or our children’s or grandchildren’s, lifetimes. Here in this part of the ISF, we can - and have had - discussions on this. And most of those discussions include relevant science and/or the scientific method.

So, re what havoc this coronavirus may - or may not - wreck on us, personally/individually or collectively, we should strive to stick to (or at least start with) objective evidence, the relevant science, the scientific method, etc, right?

There is reporting that he has been rather dismissive of the virus, even going around and touching other players things. He also made sure to touch every microphone and chair for a post game press conference. And now...drum roll, please... another of his team has the virus!! Good job, Rudy Gobert. Asshat.

I wasn't aware of that. I agree, what a stupid dick.

I'm going to be financially hit rather badly by this epidemic - I drive a taxi here in Helsinki. Now we are looking at closing public events larger than 500 people (currently a government recommendation). Just today, the hockey match that usually gets an audience of 6000+ people will be played to empty audiences, and another big event is canceled.

No big events translates into much fewer customers, translates into a reduced pay check. And that's on top of the slowdown of demand that would result from a recession, something that's looking more and more likely world wide.

I'm using disinfectant on my hands frequently, and wiping down hard surfaces in my taxi after any customer that seems at all sick. I've also got 90+ year old grandparents who are very unlikely to survive if they get hit.

Damn I hope they manage to get the vaccine out in a shorter time frame than expected!
That sucks. There are so many occupations affected here, hopefully your government will do better helping people.

Trump just wants to bail out businesses so the stock market will go up. And there is a bit of evidence he and his family are profiting from insider trading. [Posting about that moved to Trump thread.]

There are several promising treatments that are well along in trials, past the safety hurdles, now they need to prove effectiveness. But that won't be as hard for treatments as it will be for vaccines. There are plenty of otherwise terminal patients to give promising treatments to.

There are a couple vaccines a good way through development. Harder to complete effectiveness trials. Lot of people dropped the ball in 2016 after there was no more danger from SARS. But that means a lot of the research is done.

Scientists were close to a coronavirus vaccine years ago. Then the money dried up.

Obviously Trump wasn't interested in funding that. But neither were a lot of other people.

Yeah, GObert was an asshat
.But he just did a major mea culpa about it. Admits he was stupid and wrong. In a day when the rule seems to be never admit you are long, I have to give him some credit.

The more I read about how this started, and how many sings there were that his was going to hit us, the more I think this is a intelligence failure on a massive scale, a sort of Public Health version of Pearl Harbor or 9/11. evidence was there, but nobody put it together in time.

No Brackets this year.NCAA just cancelled March Madness.
It was sort of cancelling itself;the major conferences were cancelling their tourneys this morning.
