2019-nCoV / Corona virus Pt 2

Ohio just announced new restrictions on public gatherings.
This is getting damn serious, no matter what the Trump worshippers here say.

It’s been damn serious for quite some time, and most people are just playing catch-up if they are even at the races at all. The days of “hmm, shall we postpone the game?” Are going to seem pretty quaint in a few weeks.

Governor Cuomo(NY) just said today all state universities and colleges will be switching to an online mode starting Monday.

Liar! It will not happen because Dear Leader will forbid it....

Yeah, I still can’t get over his CDC press conference for his ridiculous blustering performance, his claims at being able to hold his own intellectually with the scientists there, the claims that people wanted to shake his hand (what a moron!), and that everyone can have a test.

Need more South Korea! Need less North Korea!

Those numbers would have been made up a thousand times over, if China were anything to go by. A lot of the coronavirus predictions seem to be based on too few data points and a lot of gratuitous bigotry.

Okay then. We’ll put you down for the hoax theory then.

Just think - where we're at now, with 300 deaths a day across the world, is just a tiny entree as to what's about to happen.

Even if 90% of cases aren't being tested and the mortality rate ends up at 0.3%, the death total per day will be up to 30,000 or more.

Yes, I did mean thirty thousand. Per day.

And it could be worse than that, because nobody's health systems are capable of coping with a full-throttle epidemic.

Why the hell are we not following SK & China?

I tell ya, the orientals look like having the last laugh here - whitey's getting in the racism while we can, because if we all follow Italy it's going to be very, very nasty.

Consider places, not countries.

N Korea has zero cases of (and so zero deaths due to) coronavirus, per the WHO.

Singapore, Taiwan, Macau, and Hong Kong all have both, but far fewer than S Korea, Japan (Italy, Iran, more?); all four also fewer than the US (I would need to check to be sure).

Do we have any Aussie readers here? I know there are both cases and deaths, and think I read that they’re pretty aggressive re testing, contact tracing, maybe even transparent, timely, and honest communication. Not unlike Singapore, Taiwan, Macau, Hong Kong. But quite unlike the US, Iran, N Korea, ...

Just hope Remdesivir works and that you can get some if you need it.
Forget Remdesivir, forsythia is what you need! By the FSM, didn’t you listen to Jude Law/Alan Krumwiede?!? :p

LOL.

China: Coronavirus since November, 3,158 deaths so far (~789 deaths/month)

US: Coronavirus since December, 31 deaths so far (~10 deaths/month)

That is breathtaking in its arrogance.

Check in again in a month's time and see how it all looks.

...

The N95 mask supply does seems to be low as they have already said they could need billions of them and only have 10's of millions on hand. I know California has their own stockpile of 21 million, with some expired, and it isn't enough.
The fire fighters in this city report having a sufficient supply.

They actually threw a fair quantity away a couple months ago because the masks were expired. One of them brought me 2 boxes of the expired masks. The straps are what the problem is, I can work around that but on duty fire personnel really can't be using defective masks. It's a shame though they threw so many out. But several months ago, no one knew any of this would happen.

Hopefully CA will repurpose those expired masks instead of tossing them.

NCAA announced March Madness will be played in empty stadiums.
IMHO without the fans the Tourney will be as interesting to watch as a game of tiddlywinks;might as well have just postponed or cancel the whole thing.
This is minor, but shows how this is going to impact almost everybody.

The Italian cases are not leveling off. This would be our model for a country where people own cars, travel.

Thanks to the long incubation period, it's going to take at least a week for numbers to even stabilise, so I hope Italians are good at staying home and following official advice.

March 10th was an anomaly, it then went up at the previous rate the 11th.

if that leveled off at 50 000 cases for a country of 60 million, that would give us a gauge for other EU countries and US

You can't compare Italy to the US. Italians use public transport MUCH more than we do, as does much of Europe. Using rail and bus to get around town is essentially non-existent here for the majority of Americans.

For that, you'd need a similarly cold weather place with packed subways, like New York or Massachusetts. And let's go look at the map where we have larger numbers per capita.... NY and MA! Seems to fit. D.C. is primed for it too.

The rest of the country cannot compare. For California to be on par, we should have double the east coast cases by now, even more with our demographics and airport hubs to Asia, but we are at less than half. Most of them in Silicon Valley, as could be predicted with so much travel to China/Korea going on there.

My prediction: CA will get more cases, but there will be no 'crisis' here like Italy. Not even close to it.

Classes suspended at my school until April 6 and all large public gatherings prohibited on campus.

My state of Indiana has 10 COVID-19 cases as of a few hours ago.

Sumo is already behind closed doors here and yes, the lack of atmosphere is palpable. Baseball pre-season matches also with no spectators, and the season is being pushed back. The high school baseball tournament, that is every Japanese high school baseball player’s dream to qualify for, and realistically a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, has been cancelled.

March Madness is one of most popular annual sporting events;and the audience rooting for their teams is a big part of the excitement. GOing to be a fiasco without that.
