Ed Corona Virus Conspiracy Theories....

And this highlights why "bioweapons" are mostly a BS scare tactic. Even with access to the best equipment, it's still really hard to control. The virus "has its own agenda", which isn't compatible with most military agendas. The army doesn't want a gun that shoots the wrong people, or refuses to shoot the right people for some unknown reason, or keeps shooting after they've won the battle.

I also remember something George Orwell said:That people are influenced by fiction in novels and movies much more then they realise or would admit.
That most novels and movies dealing with pandemics use "It escaped from a bioweapon research lab" as the origin of the disease has a lot to do with the popularity of this theory.
I give you Stephan King's very popular novel 'The Stand" as an example. I don't thing King was promoting a conspiracy theory, but saw it as a quick and easy way to explain a massively destructive killer virus.

I think if a fiction writer wants to use a killer virus then they should use smallpox. Or the black death. The one that killed a significant % of the world's population.

Actually the coronavirus would be a lousy biological warfare weapon.
But then the people who scream biological weapon at every opportunity don't seem to understand what you want a biological weapon to do....

As near as I can figure it, the theory is that the Chinese developed it as a bioweapon, and cleverly deployed it against their own population to divert suspicion.

Biological warfare could be devastatingly effective, if your enemy was of a different species and you had an organism that would attack them and not your own species. If your enemy is of your species, it gets a hell of a lot trickier.

Irony is China is , I think, the only country in modern times where we have definent proof was a target of biological warfare......back in World War 2.
Read about Unit 731 sometime...

If fact I think there probably are a few crackpot theories involving Unit 731 and the Corona virus that are flotating around somewhere.

The Coronavirus is obvious a nefarious plot to replace RBG at the minor cost of 1% of the world population.

I think the new coronavirus outbreak is an excellent opportunity to breakdown the development of conspiracy theories.

"coronavirus" being a generic term for a particular family of viruses is lost on the ignorant public. We've had high profile coronavirus outbreaks before in recent memory; SARS in the early 2000s and MERS in 2012. Word spread through the internet as "Coronavirus", people point out that this bleach product says it kills "human coronavirus", which isn't labelled very well in the first place and it isn't profound at all of course coronaviruses can cause illnesses other than this current epidemic. A lesson in category error at the very least.

The EPA's efficacy test data requirements for disinfectants allow claims against the Coronaviridae family if the product shows efficacy against the most resistant representative virus of the family. It's the same with other enveloped viruses as well.
Making specific claims against the current virus requires approval under the EPA's Emerging Viral Pathogens policy, which has stricter requirements.

The Coronovirus was a biological weapon theory is spreading, well, like a virus, in India.
Which version is more popular that it was China or the US create it? I recently heard a version in which it was an accidental release by China because the scientist at biological research lab were know to sell the animals used for testing at the local market. Certainly falls into several tropes about China at the moment. The unscrupulous government combined with desperate underpaid workers and a willingness to eat anything.

Back in the Middle ages, Jews were accused of causing the Black Death...some thing never change.
I recently heard a podcast discuss this. The mentioned a port where there were pretty clear records that it came in on a few specific ships but they still blamed the Jews.

I got this one from a friend of mine today:
COVID-19 Coronavirus: A Fake Pandemic? Who’s Behind It? Global Economic, Social and Geopolitical Destabilization (GlobalResearch.ca, Feb. 1, 2020)

GlobalResearch (Media Bias Fact Check)
GlobalResearch (Rational Wiki)

It seems to be in line with the conspiracy theory mentioned in post 26, and the beginning of the article sounds much like Trump the other night: playing down the number of cases outside of China when it's only just begun.

Notice this:
On October 18, 2019, the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, Baltimore undertook a carefully designed simulation of a coronavirus epidemic entitled nCoV-2019.

In the Event 201 Simulation of a Coronavirus Pandemic, a 15% collapse of financial markets had been “simulated”. It was not “predicted” according to the organizers and sponsors of the event, which included the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as well the World Economic Forum.

There's a link to an alleged screenshot, but nothing makes it seem to be an actual screenshot of anything related to John Hopkins.

“It’s not a question of if but rather a question of when and how many people in this country will have severe illness," Messonnier told reporters, warning if the virus spreads widely, drastic methods might be required to contain it, such as closing schools and requiring employees to work from home.
“The disruption to everyday life might be severe," she warned.
But some right-wing media figures aligned with President Donald Trump — including popular radio host and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient Rush Limbaugh — want listeners and readers to ignore Messonnier’s extensive background and knowledge of infectious diseases in favor of a baseless conspiracy theory that she is secretly working to harm Trump and his administration.
Their evidence? Her brother happens to be Rod Rosenstein, Trump’s former deputy attorney general who was responsible for appointing Robert Mueller as special counsel to investigate Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election.
Rush Limbaugh and others push false conspiracy theory about top CDC official with Philly ties as coronavirus fears spread (Philiadelpia Enquirer, Feb. 27, 2020)

Just a couple of days later, the whole thing looks very different, doesn't it?

They designated the MERS coronavirus "2012-nCoV" after the first few cases, so it appears to be standard nomenclature.
