Should we fear Bernie?

Why does Bernie insist on calling it Medicare For All? Whatever ends up in his plan, it most certainly won't be anything like what we currently know as Medicare. Medicare isn't free at the point of care. It doesn't cover basic preventive services like annual physicals, immunizations, etc. It has premiums, deductibles and coinsurance. It's designed for people with disabilities and the retired population. It doesn't cover dental and vision. It doesn't cover long-term care. The cost-sharing on hospitalizations can still be expensive.

Medicare also works very closely with private insurance companies through Medicare advantage plans.

What Bernie is describing doesn't sound much like Medicare at all. It sounds more like Medicaid.

And I think it is very clear that we have a new Wildcard in the election: The Corona VIrus crisis.
If the incompetence continues, Bernie might just have chance.

As long as we are correcting Corvid...

It's coronavirus, all one word. It was brought up in the Coronavirus thread.

Every time a news story hit about the 100,000 people in Flint Michigan who's water wasn't good enough, one of the 2 million Americans who don't have access to running water at all crossed that line from "I want to fix the system" to "I want to punish the system."

And it took them almost four years to discover that Trump is the system and yet they themselves are the ones being punished by him.

You are one of 30 million Americans who live more then an hour's drive from the nearest trauma center.

You just had a heart attack or stroke.

You don't care how much it's going to cost once you get to the hospital because you'll be dead 3 or 4 times over by the time you get there.

Rural America is not going to vote for universal healthcare that only "city folk" are gonna get to use. It's the "I don't understand why the 60 million people who live out where the buses don't run aren't paying for my mass transit to be better" problem again.

People really need to learn how "The X I have isn't good enough" sounds to the people who don't have anything.

The states are allowed to subsidize rural doctors and hospitals. At this time, we have two bigger cities in my state, and although there are "community hospitals" here and there, if there are car accidents that require flying the victims to a hospital, they are flown to the two cities. The low populated end of the state has one city in a nearby state that is closer. We somehow overinvested in air transport, so there are too many companies. If they mange to be the first on the scene, they will charge some 50 000 plus for the ride. I presume Bernie will fly them for free. If Berniecare gets any traction, the rurals are going to go for it.

Bernie constantly says he wants the USA to me more like Scandinavia.

Well, Scandinavia has a 54% income tax on folks who make $66,000 or more. And they have a 25% sales tax.

Do we really want that? Even if means free college & healthcare?

Obviously if you're poor and sick, this is a great deal.

But if you're lower middle class and reletively healthy, this **** would totally such ballz.

How do middle class in scandinavia feel about that tax rate?

Unless you give a **** about the poor; recognize that those with health care are already paying the costs of those who don't; and/or realize that populations of those with inadequate health care cause health problems even for those who do, you mean.

Even going by nothing but pure selfishness and being willing to throw everybody else to the vultures, it's still a better deal to live someplace where you have a backup in case anything ever does go wrong. People in those countries don't just live longer and physically healthier than Americans; they also have much lower stress because they're not perpetually teetering on the edge and thus needing to worry about when they might teeter off of it, and lower stress lets people get more enjoyment out of life.

WE do have Medicaid

Doesn't cover all of the poor. Most notably: most states don't cover adults without dependent children. Full stop. Regardless of their poverty. If a childless adult has zero income and no insurance and gets sick there is no safety net for them, even if they spent their career to date paying in.

Is that the reason why Baylor is obsessed with childless bugmen? Is he simply concerned that they may be excluded from receiving health care?
