Having successfully developed a vaccine for the SARS would probably be useful for the closely genetically related SARS-CoV-2 (SARS and the new SARS-CoV-2 share about 85 percent of their genetic code).

I was able to read the whole fortune.com article, just by registering (I didn't have to pay anything). I had to wait for a few minutes until their e-mail arrived (only then could I complete the registration by clicking on a link), but this was not necessary for reading the article.

Viral vector vaccines can relatively easily be re- engineered to express the protein of interest. There are adenovirus , Vesicular stomatitis and vaccinia virus platforms that are in development.

You don't understand. It's not hard to develop the vaccine itself. Actually we already seem to have vaccines against SARS-COV2. What takes time is testing. And that has to be done if ANY change is done to the vaccine.

My word! Death toll in Italy up to 7!

How did that happen so quickly?

The numbers do not really say how many people is infected. They say how many we know about. So it's natural it can suddenly jump. It doesn't mean the number of infected grows this fast. We just didn't know about them, and now we are quickly learning.
Problem is, clearly all countries base their countermeasures based on these numbers. In Italy, cities with infected are now isolated. Neighbor Austria officially has no case, so they don't do anything yet. In reality they simply must have infected people, they just don't know it. You can't stop the spread if you react one week too late.

Wash your hands often and use a liberal amount of alcohol based hand sanitizer (60% or more) more often in between. Most of that **** in the stores doesn't have any alcohol in it at all. All those wipes they dispense at the carts in grocery stores are not better than a wet towel.

If you read the directions on the labels of disinfectant wipes, they'll say that to be effective as a disinfectant, treated surfaces need to remain visibly wet for several minutes, often 4-5 minutes. A quick wipe-down with one wipe isn't going to do anything other than remove surface dirt, and how many people stand at their cart for 5 minutes, wiping it down with a succession of fresh wipes? They'll sometimes have sanitizing directions that only require 15 seconds or so of contact, but that only affects a handful of bacteria and no viruses.

I suspect that the poor protection that supposedly masks offer, according to current data, is due to how difficult it is to wear a mask properly. But a well set up mask, that closes tightly around the face should be very effective at blocking airborne (droplet borne) viruses.

Anyone who wears a CPAP mask knows how difficult it is to get the perfect fit. And that's when lying perfectly still most of the time.

I know that Jason Momoa is very fond of this type of greeting. If Aquaman ends up buying the farm, all bets are off as to the world taking this calmly.

Considering the role he played in the violent anti science movement here in hawaii that ended up part of the anti-vaxxer caused deaths in samoa recently, it could end up saving lives someday.

The fight against science here is going to have some pretty big effects on how the corona virus plays out here without question

I´ve had some experience wearing masks in extremely dusty environments in a job I did, and after trying many kinds of masks and methods of wearing them, I realised how hard it is to wear them correctly. Unless the fit is perfect the air enters through the openings left between the ill-fitting mask and the face, instead of through the filtering material. In a dusty jobsite, that means having dusty snot after a days work, so one keeps learning new things, eventually what I learned was that one needs to apply some sort of glue or paste where the mask contacts the face, and that the mask needs a valve. Even then the filtering is often not perfect. The only near-perfect filtering was with proper rubber masks, like this kind:

(but then you also need to protect the eyes, of course)
Viruses are much smaller than dust particles.

A good tight fitting mask will stop some droplets containing the virus, but not all of them.

If you read the label on lysol and listerine they claim to kill 99% of the germs that [fill in the blank]. It's false advertising.

Yes, you are correct, disinfectants need exposure time. That still doesn't make the products used on grocery store carts effective.

Is antibacterial hand soap effective without water? Running water wont be that easy to get here except at home and hand sanitizer is already all gone

Given the massive levels of quarantine, and trust me, the footage shows that the Chinese government is being incredibly serious about quarantine, forcibly dragging people from their homes if they register a high temperature -- I don't believe that China has any idea how many people have died from the virus.

It will be some time before authorities work out how many people have died at home.

I think a lot of people have ignored the most important thing about that, and it's not whether the numbers are understated - it's the fact that, despite the quarantine measures, it hasn't contained the disease.

No other country will be able to replicate the level of quarantine China managed and numbers will get out of control very bloody quickly.

I had a laugh earlier when I saw our Ministry of Health was "confident in its ability to deal with a pandemic". They bat on about 2-300 intensive care beds that cab be added to the system, while failing to accept that will be less than a tenth of what's required if it hits.

Maybe it is generally good because it builds up resistances. Are the Maori sicker than other groups?

Oh yeah. It's not possible to pin-point if the hongi matters, but Maori have the lowest life expectancy of all ethnic groups in NZ, and feature highest in all negative health stats.

Lysol is an EPA regulated pesticide while Listerine is an FDA regulated drug, so they're different things making different claims.
For a disinfectant to make virucidal claims, efficacy data has to be submitted to the EPA for each specific virus showing at least a 3 log10 reduction (99.9%) in the quantity of virus on test surfaces, using American Society for Testing and Materials Method E 1053.
The typical Lysol label says "Kills 99.9% of viruses and bacteria**", with the ** being a footnote elsewhere on the label, "** Kills Salmonella enterica, Escherichia coli O157:H7, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Avian Influenza A (H1N1) Virus and Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 & 2." Yes, if someone didn't notice the footnote, that could be seen as a claim to kill all viruses and bacteria.
The majority of consumer disinfectants are blends of various quaternary ammonium chloride compounds, which have been used as disinfectants for decades, working by denaturing proteins and disrupting cell membranes in the target organisms.

Most likely not.

Unless it is designed as a waterless hand wash.

Most liquid soaps have ingredients which will damage the skin if left in place.

If your skin is damaged, your risk of other infections goes up a lot.

At work, yesterday morning, I noticed that three enormous boxes of alcohol based hand sanitiser had been delivered to our floor. They are certainly taking this seriously. Behind the scenes, steps are being taken to make it easier for people like me to be able to work from home.

Crap tastic...what's good if there is no water? Just pour rubbing alcohol? We likely wont see hand sanitizer at the stores until this whole thing is over. Hawaii is crazy for gouging in even the most minor of emergencies, this one will certainly have the powers that be hoarding and gouging these sorts of things

Nice.

Rubbing alcohol will damage your skin as well. Is there no way you can conserve water for hand washing?

If you want some sanitiser I'll gladly send you a box of it - no shortage here at this stage. Probably take 3 or 4 days to get there is the only problem.

Thank you so much, but I only need it for the next few days to not spread things to my parents...They will soon be in a rather isolated place and hopefully be ok

Chinese Govenrment is making noises about lifting some of their restrictions, despite the virus seeming to get out of control.
Maybe they are scared of the economic consequnces and would be willing to sacrifice a few thousand lives to try to save their economy.

I'm beginning to wonder if China hasn't been sacrificing lives to its economy all along. If this outbreak is a side effect of their strategy for staying one step ahead of the Soviet Union.
