If you mean Kentaro Iwata, he did not completely retract his statement. He pulled the videos, it is true, but as I mentioned he was on Japanese TV yesterday talking about this and essentially said many of the same things.

What may have changed, is that the officials in charge have apparently changed what they were doing (ETA: he says the situation improved on the ship), but there is a report here from a press conference he did with the Foreign Correspondents Club in Japan:

https://english.kyodonews.net/news/...eos-blasting-situation-on-virus-hit-ship.html

And there is a longer excerpt here which I haven't had time to read yet:

https://english.kyodonews.net/news/...navirus-hit-diamond-princess-cruise-ship.html
The news report I read quoted him retracting what he said.

You're there, you have more access to the local news. I'll take your word for it.

There's a pretty good english translation of what he said after the retraction. He really didn't retract any of the factual claims he made, just some of the tenor as far as I can tell. In japanese it isn't actually as cagey as the translation comes across as its really more politeness that gets kind of mistranslated I think

Hmmm...I would be interested to know what was said in the article.

In his press conference, which I presume he conducted in English, he says this:

Thank you for coming. My name is Kentaro Iwata, from Kobe University Hospital. The remarks I will make from now at today's conference are all personal and do not represent the views of Kobe University or other bodies I belong to. As you might know, I posted a YouTube (video) both in Japanese and English regarding the Diamond Princess.

Basically speaking, the principle opinion I wanted to express was a lack of adequate infection control inside the cruise ship. Two days later, this morning, and my opinion is largely the same. The problem was fundamental and that is probably based on the lack of a more fundamental or systemic issue, which is the lack of a CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) which exist in most nations, but not in Japan. So that is what I expressed.

Also,

Q: I think the first question has to be why you took down your original video. You appear to have taken it down. Could you explain the reasons for that?

Okay, this morning I removed my posts, both the English and Japanese versions, completely removed all of them. It's because the post became so viral and was viewed by so many people, and yesterday I was informed that significant improvement was done inside the cruise ship and that zoning, which I had a huge concern (about), had an improvement for better circumstances.

Also on the same day, the Institute of Infectious Diseases in Japan published a report showing the data of the cruise infections. This is what I suggested over the last week or so to the Ministry of Health and Labor, which is openness and transparency, and the disclosure of the data inside the cruise ship, which was never done. News coverage showed the number of the people who got tested and who got positive.

And you could have seen, you know, today's number of test was 66 and out of 66, 44 turned positive, that kind of thing, which doesn't mean anything to me because the data of the tested and the data of the results came in, it doesn't mean anything in regards to the spread of the infectious disease inside the cruise.

So what you need is the onset of the symptoms of each patient who developed the coronavirus infection and the date of that. If you see the curve which is called epicurve in the professional term, then you will distinguish between the infections occurring before Feb. 5 and after Feb. 5. And that is extremely important because unless you know the facts, how many secondary infections were occurring when and where, you can't really conduct proper infection control management.

So that was what I thought was lacking and thankfully the Institute of Infectious Diseases published that yesterday morning and it turned out that most of the Japanese passengers didn't have the secondary infection after Feb. 5, although there were infections among crews, which is likely to be a secondary transmssion. So because of these two, one with the improvement of the zoning inside the cruise ship and secondly the disclosure of the data to show the facts about the secondary transmissions, I thought my role of the YouTube post is over.

There's no need to spread the opinion and ask (people) to be aware of this issue because the issue is gone. And so I though we don't need to discuss any further regarding these and I deleted my post. So that's my answer. Did I answer your question?

Latest here is that a school in Hokkaido now has two cases of coronavirus.

Apparently everyone will be tested.

Betcha they find heaps if it's got to schools.

Between Japan and S Korea, cases outside China are rising very fast.

Shares down 0.5% today, and the big sell will come next week, when the numbers start to zoom up. It sure looks to me like it's about to go to "out of control" status any day now.

Now, this is bloody interesting:

More than 400 members of the church, a branch of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, which is often accused of being a cult, are showing symptoms of the disease. Tests were still ongoing, according to the city’s mayor, Kwon Young-jin.

S Korea's numbers are going to take a very large hike when those come in, as you'd think they've all been infected. An astonishing number for one person to infect.

I read the story like this: she went to the doctor, saying she feels sick. He took samples, told her the results will be the next they. Then she went to the church, and conducted several masses (which is supposed to be usual). Next day she comes back for the result, and that's how they learned.
They also added it was not deliberate. Why did they have to add it ? ;)

Israel and Lebanon added to the list of countries with active cases.
USA, Italy, Japan and Iran add 10+ cases.

Iran is clearly in the midst of an out-of-control outbreak. Along with two further deaths, they're showing 18 cases, which will be well short of reality.

Aside from stopping international travel altogether I don't see any way of stopping the spread to other regions.

Please guardian say "accused of being a cult" another 400 times sheesh!

I heard some rumours here that japan had closed some airports but I see nothing in the news. Has anyone seen anything about that?

Sharemarkets down 1% across the board with a lot more to come.

I'll be amazed if they don't drop by 10-20% once the scope becomes evident.

Problem with viruses is they are a lot like a house with cockroaches;stamp out one and another one pops up.

I posted this on 21 January:

Looks to me like this one is well and truly out of the bag.

Sadly, it now looks to be 100% correct, with outbreaks right across the world.

There will be an explosion of cases everywhere next week.

India still showing 3, all cured.

The woman from Korean sect is not supposed to be the source of the infection, just one of the infected. The infection inside the sect is bigger and older.
In other words, yes, it's been growing out of sight all over the world.

Bingo!

It was always going to, and I reckon we're about three days before WHO declares a global pandemic is under way.

I was talking to some people earlier and the key question is, what next? Developed nations may be able to keep a lid on it for a while, but with growth in the ME, it's going to get out of control very quickly. With infections out of control in Iran, it's going to be unstoppable in Afghanistan as soon as it gets there.

We can't shut the entire world down, so it's going to be a long, hard fight.

Sadly and to my great disappointment, Promed went with the official reports on the cruise ship, claiming despite obvious evidence to the contrary, that everything was done right and the quarantine was successful.

In the meantime the man behind the video has completely retracted his statement.

Stay tuned. This is not the kind of thing you can cover up. Either the people getting off the cruise ship will develop disease and spread the infection, or it will turn out the video and the crew member reports were incorrect or exaggerated.

:popcorn1

This has happened.

One of the passengers developed symptoms on the flight to Australia, tested positive and has been rushed to quarantine at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. (Via a Royal Flying Doctor flight).

Others are now isolated in quarantine elsewhere because they've also tested positive.

What steps have you taken, to protect yourself from this eventuality?

Some people have gone so far as to cut off contact with anyone even vaguely Chinese-looking. That's pretty wrong headed, but at least they're being proactive in the face of a global massacre.

What do you recommend, as the reasonable hedge against risk?

Are you talking financial or personal health?

If the latter, my workplace maintains a supply of alcohol based waterless handwash, literally a bottle on every desk, and has been repeating previous instructions to use it often.

I'm avoiding public transport, and all unnecessary contact with other people.

I even have my own personal shopping trolley (not for this reason, but at the moment I'm glad that I do). I've noticed that supermarkets here give out free antiseptic wipes for cleaning the shopping trolley handle, but doubt the efficacy of those wipes. Better than zero perhaps, but not much depending on the actual ingredients of the wipe.

Bear in mind, I'm in a high risk group: asthmatic, over 55, and a mild heart condition which normally does not cause me any problems.

Given that I've been hospitalised due to influenza in the past, I'd rather not find out if I can overcome this virus.
