They put a cup of toothpicks and a sponge stuck to the wall of the elevator in my building now. So you can use a toothpick to push the button then stick it into the sponge when you are done (so no one will take the same toothpick that you used).

Don't know if it's related to anything, but my VPN stopped working two days ago. This happens from time to time.

Coronavirus: Couple quarantined on cruise ship criticise UK government

A British couple quarantined on a cruise liner off the Japanese port of Yokohama have accused the UK government of ignoring their pleas for help.

Mr Abel, who describes himself as a "staunch Tory", said he had "no confidence" in Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Speaking during a Facebook live video with his wife, Sally, he said: "When he [Johnson] just says 'keep calm, don't panic' - I'd like to see you in this situation, mate. I really would."

Mr Abel, who has become an unlikely celebrity as a result of his videos, went on to appeal to billionaire Richard Branson for help.
"So, Richard Branson, I want to ask you a question, pal," he said in a video posted on Valentine's Day.
"If you and your family were in this situation, what would you do? And please don't say 'chill out, stay calm', that's not what we want to hear.
"I'm asking, what would it cost to hire one of your smaller planes, put all the Brits on board, no flight attendants, packaged food?
"Take us to Brize Norton, take us straight into the medical facility and let us do our quarantine there by people who can speak our language."
Mr Abel added that his appeal was a reflection of "just how desperate some of the passengers are becoming".

He and his wife have previously said they have been given the option to leave and continue their quarantine ashore if they test negative for the virus, but have chosen to remain on board.

As in most people just croaked and no symptoms? Or most were so mild that they never suspected corona virus and ended up OK?

Problem is, this year's 'flu srain wasn't expected to peak until early spring (around about now and March) and thus vaccinations were delayed until November. It is quite possible people who died were thought to have just had normal 'flu that turned rogue.

Roborama, we're pretty worried here, especially after our Mayor underling of the missile button governor told everyone to go to the crowded open markets as there is no corona virus danger in those situations

But you must be freaking out, I feel so bad for you guys

BBC News.

A lot of sources including the CDC (or maybe they got it from them) are only listing those three symptoms because they are the most common presentation. But the CDC has a paragraph preceding the list that includes this:
... reported illnesses have ranged from mild symptoms to severe illness and death. Symptoms can include:

People in this thread should be careful about declaring things as absolutes. Which is what I meant by this:
Er, I thought you disputed this when I said it?
"You have to be careful interpreting this stuff..."

I keep trying to guess what crowded island you live on. I was thinking about Taiwan, but the clues don't fit. Who has missiles? That narrows it down but also eliminates all the places I was thinking of.

I worry about a lot of people in this forum.

I'm still trying to get my head around the maths here.

For example - the rate of serious infection and deaths in China has stayed stable over the past several days and the rate is currently 18.8% of all cases being classed as severe, or where the patient has died.

Outside China, that rate is 3.75%, and now there are 800 cases outside China we can give the numbers some weight. We also know huge numbers have tested negative and that leads are being followed, so the reported numbers in developed nations will be pretty close to reality.

It's apparent that there are many more mild cases than severe cases and I'd be amazed if the same weren't true in China. A lot of people won't be sick enough to see a doctor, far less be tested, plus China has admitted to a shortage of tests.

Using the same 3.75% rate would give China a total case load of 345,000, which seems to be a lot more like reality.

At that level, the death rate would be 0.5%, which is certainly about where most people think it will end up. That number of cases and death rate also works well with most of the dead being elderly and/or sick, as in a 'flu outbreak. I see the Taiwanese bloke who died had diabetes and Hep C, so he was a prime candidate. Also, as he presumable caught it from Chinese visitors, it will turn out that others have it as well, so even 0.5% may be overshooting.

Still, as I've noted, if it does go around the world, that kind of death rate will lead to millions of deaths and extreme pressure on health services.

Oahu. If you didnt hear about our governor's missile button failure, I'm sure there are still a bunch of hillarious memes, reddit and youtube things on it

I didn't know Oahu was that crowded. That missile alert mistake was frightening.

It's certainly a place at risk given all the ties to China.

Edited to add: My cousin lives on Oahu.

US passengers from the cruise ship on their way home minus 40 infected. Number of cases on the ship > 300 >350. Clearly there is ongoing transmission of the virus. Those on the ship were essentially sitting ducks.

I don't understand how the cruise line company was that stupid to not recognize the risk to and from the crew. This is the modern world, people are supposed to understand the germ theory.

One UK citizen is complaining loudly that he's been left behind by his country.

Edited to correct cruise ship case numbers.
