Just two personal observations.

In my life I've found that recognizing when I was wrong helped make me smarter and better informed. I've repeatedly benefited enormously by listening to people who knew more than I did.

I've also found "the science pages" in google vary considerably in legitimacy and accuracy.

Thank you for sharing your personal opinion with me, although I do not recall asking for it.

Yes it is. You responded to SG calling it a CT by intimating that she trusts the Chinese government, which is ridiculous.
I responded to Belz, who implied that I would imply with my reply 'endorsement of official Chinese government figures'.

Which I did not!

I am not native english, but afaik there is a distinction between endorsement and trusting.

I did not use the word endorsement. He did!

"Endorsement" as in accepting Chinese claims at face value. SG did nothing of the sort, so your comment to her was silly.

What is the death rate in first world countries? I read they are fighting it with anti-flu actions and anti-virals, successfully.

First, they are selling woo. You should know better.

Second, I don't care what they claim, that is not a charcoal filter. What, you think it's a charcoal filter because it's black? :sdl:

No, I think it's a carbon filter because they explicitly state the product contains a carbon filter. It's possible they're lying about that, but (1) I have no reason to think they are, and (2) if they are, that's ordinary fraud, not woo.

As for the 99% of pathogens, health care workers should be so lucky. It's poppycock.

Why? Aerosol dispersion is the primary method of airborne pathogen transmission, so if you block >99% of aerosol particles (which isn't that hard), it seems like you can achieve that goal.

Now the reputable Australian ABC news site is also saying things are worse than the Chinese leadership wants to let on.

Not quite how I read it - it seems to say that they're lagging a bit, which is no surprise, given the massive numbers involved. They raise a question about Beijing, but based on very scant evidence.

One thing is for sure, if Beijing has to shut down, the economy is in deep trouble.

The death rate outside China is running at 1%, but the numbers are very small, so too early to say for sure.

The anti-viral treatments are also far too few in number to say, but Thailand seems sure it's working.

A couple of encouraging points are the cruise ships, which give a perfectly sealed-off population to watch. The fact that the numbers are quite low, despite being crammed together on a ship, eating & playing together, raises hope that it might not be as contagious as thought, but give it a few days.

I was just reading that. The CT machine will now go into overdrive.

Can't say I really blame people for thinking that. The CCP appears willing to harvest organs from prisoners to make money, why wouldn't they be willing to off a doctor who embarrassed them? But it's also quite plausible he died of the disease alone. It's not like he would be the only one to. Even if the CCP was willing to kill him, that doesn't mean they actually did. So... who knows?

On the back of a couple of encouraging points, some less encouraging points that suggest we're getting close to out of control.

A British man has been diagnosed with the disease, despite having been no closer to China than Singapore. Also from Singapore, at least three delegates at a 100-person conference in Singapore have been diagnosed with the novel virus.

Seems to me that if people are coming down with it far outside China, the cat is probably out of the bag and a global pandemic is under way.

Interesting side effect of all the face masks: it screws up facial recognition.

https://qz.com/1796833/coronavirus-face-masks-foil-facial-recognition-cameras/

Indeed - facial recognition software effectively relies on the relative positions and angles between many datum points on the face. When you can only see the eyes of the person (and in many instances you can't even see the ears properly either), the software has no chance of making matches that are anywhere near reliable.

Today's numbers definitely show a levelling off in new infections, with 2500.

Deaths still coming pretty fast, with 70.

It looks like the UN's estimated death rate of 2% will hold up, making it a neat 100 times worse than Mexican 'flu.

No question that with nil resistance to the virus, hospitals around the world will not be able to cope if it does get away.

Based on half the population getting the virus, we'd be looking at 7,000,000 deaths.

Did you round up to get that number?

And once again, no source. Or is this from your Wiki page again?

My source shows one death in Hong Kong and one in the Philippines.

BTW, there were 2 cases in the Philippines and one death. I'm surprised you didn't claim the death rate was 50%.

You don't know what you are talking about here.

It is fraud. I know you're smarter than this. Do you believe all the supplement labels too? I mean, why would they lie?

https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/npptl/usernotices/counterfeitResp.html

NIOSH approval in the US is like FDA approval. There are other agencies in other countries people would be wise to check into.

Masks are being sold as fashion accessories to get around claiming they work. These masks are making direct claims. Listerine and Lysol have been fined for similar false advertising so now they word their ads very carefully to appear to make claims without actually making the claim.

Want proof? Next time you see a bottle of Listerine, notice the alcohol which is supposed to be the active ingredient, is listed under "inactive" ingredients. And they put it in the middle of a paragraph so the list of "inactive" ingredients is hard to see. The alcohol is not in sufficient concentration to kill most microorganisms.

Those claims are woo.
