Cont: House Impeachment Inquiry - part 3

Under Trump and the republicans, the U.S. deficit has greatly increased and is in the ~$1 trillion dollar range. And unlike the deficits under Obama (where the U.S. was in a recession), the Republican deficit is occurring at a time when the U.S. economy is supposed to be growing.

Regulations to prevent another 2008/2009 meltdown are being removed, possibly allowing another 'bubble'.

The U.S. is not building up its infrastructure; many bridges need replacement. And the current focus of the Trump administration is on old (and rapidly becoming obsolete) areas of the economy... fossil fuels, manufacturing, etc. instead of technology.

Things may LOOK good now, but its basically a coat of paint on a termite-infested house, and the owners seem to have no interest in getting rid of the infestation.

Even after Trump leaves office, the effects of his administration will continue to be felt for decades.
Fair point but if it is anything like here (and it sounds like it from your post) issues with infrastructure literally come from decades of govts of all shades putting it off.

We actually have the same problem now here.

Find the whole blame that one president/prime minister who had 3/4 years and it magically should have appeared a bit silly.

If you are having trouble now you should probably be looking Clinton or even pre him

Well said. This administration is playing the historical Republican playbook (since 1980).
It is based on busting the budget giving the wealthy huge tax breaks and then trying to reduce the social safety net to pay for it when it becomes untenable. A reverse Robin Hood so to speak. Steal from the poor and give to the rich.

The effect of the tax breaks naturally results in a a booming stock market. That is because the wealthy are so flooded with money that the invest it in stocks which increases the stock prices and creates a bubble. Unfortunately bubbles burst.

I wonder if some people here are ready to take back some of the crap they said about Romney back in 2012.
I never supported Romney, because I disagreed with his policies,I was an Obama man all the way, but always thought he was a decent, honorable man, and a number of members here basically smeared him, going back 30 years to an incident where he accidently killed a pet dog of his as proof he was unfit the presidency. Though I was an Obama supporter, I thought that was ridiculous .

And stuff like this:http://www.internationalskeptics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=235813&highlight=romney

Sorry, but that is incredibly petty.

That has always been my opinion of Romney.

Total nonsense. The Democrats have been pushing for infrastructure investment for the last 30 years. Instead we give blank checks to a bloated military and tax breaks to the wealthy. And remember, Trump said he was going to be the infrastructure president. Yet he has done nothing. He hasn't even tried.

Romney makes the (reasonable) assumption that the amount of dirt still to be unearthed on Trump will taint his presidency and everyone who supported him.
In effect, he has positioned himself as the only credible post-Trump candidate for President.

Sorry. Didn't realise you haven't had the Democrats in charge and could have done it for "30 years"

He is a decent honorable man. Mostly, that is. I think his religion is a major crock and I disagree with most of his policy positions, but I have never thought he was a bad guy.

:boggled:

I disagree with the decent, honorable man claim, much as he certainly is in comparison to Trump and McConnell. Rather...

"I think the Republican nominee is unfit to serve as president...and he keeps on proving it. This isn't a situation where you have an episodic gaffe. This is daily and weekly where Republicans are distancing themselves from statements he is making. There has to be a point at which you say, this isn't somebody I can support to be president of the United States, even if he purports to be a member of my party. I recognize the Republicans profoundly disagree with myself and Hillary Clinton on tax policy or certain elements of foreign policy. But there have been Republican presidents with whom I disagreed with, but I didn't have a doubt they could function as president. I think I was right and Mitt Romney and John McCain were wrong on certain policy issues, but I never thought they couldn't do the job."

President Obama (bolding mine) during a speech in Singapore, Aug 2, 2016.

That's the key difference.

I'm a bit more in agreement with what Obama actually said here. Romney would have been fine as President. I do think that he's a ****wad, but I never had cause to strongly oppose him when it came to competence, patriotism, and a myriad of other things that are normally considered basic necessity qualities for a President, unlike Trump.

Democrats were in charge of the Presidency, not Congress. Every infrastructure bill sent to Congress was dead on arrival. It was the policy of the GOP to not give Obama a victory of any kind even if it might enjoy bipartisan support under other conditions.

Exactly!

But not this part:
"Corporations are people, my friends."

...

Lindsey Graham said it wouldn't be a fair trial if Trump didn't get to confront the whistleblower. So by his own lights, this wasn't a fair trial. Plus, of course, Graham had already announced he had no intention of being unbiased.
They love this rationalization, like there's some secret evidence against Trump he has been unable to confront.

I don't buy his policy positions. I think that statement is a crock. But I do believe he does care about others. He may exaggerate and spin, but he's not going to lie over and over which is Trump's modus operandi.

To be fair, the Republicans did make proposals to address the issue. They basically proposed selling off a whole lot of infrastructure to private interests (including roads, of course) and pushing off most of the rest of the work and fundraising onto the states.

For some strange reason, those weren't particularly popular initiatives.

It was a non-starter.

Like father like son:

Trump Jr. shared shared the image — which features Romney wearing “mom jeans” and the words “because you’re a p—y” — on Instagram and demanded Romney be booted from the Republican Party.

“Mitt Romney is forever bitter that he will never be POTUS. He was too weak to beat the Democrats then so he’s joining them now. He’s now officially a member of the resistance & should be expelled from the @GOP,” he wrote, along with the meme.

That was cruel. I clicked with hope, only to have that hope dashed.

It took a second to register what you were talking about. Yeah, these are Republican Senators before Trump won the presidency.

Here's a more inspirational clip making the rounds on Twitter. It's remarkably well cut.
