Cont: House Impeachment Inquiry - part 3

In one version, the senator allows egregious crimes to be committed with his approval.

In the other version, the senator allows egregious crimes to be committed with his approval, but he feels a tiny bit guilty about it.

Like when you eat a chocolate bar when you are supposed to be on a diet? Not like you have failed to protect the nation’s democratic system from historic attack while on a big fat pay check to serve it and having sworn to do so?

Any word on when the official vote on seeing witness is gonna be? From what I hearing it's pretty much a done deal that the Republicans are gonna vote against it, but I'm still holding out a little hope.

It can't happen here, right? The dismantling or crumbling of democracy as has occurred in other nations could not possibly take root in exceptional, God-favored USA. A comforting thought many USAians smugly content themselves with. But we're seeing here, in real time, just how such a process gets underway. A door to a dark place is most decidedly opened a crack. A political 'one minute to midnight' is looming. I see the coming election in November as one of the most crucial in American history.

My thesis at the University of Washington which I wrote in 1984 was how governments break down and how NAZI Germany while extreme is not unusual and how what happened there could happen anywhere including the United States. People in the US take what we have had for granted.

What is happening here eats me up inside. I pray (and I don't pray) that we can reverse our devolution.

I have no hope. Never did. There is no way the GOP wants this show to continue any longer. They just needed to pretend for a while they care. They don't. It's been a long time since they did.

Hope hurts now.

Then stop hoping. It's not going to happen. There will be no witnesses, and Trump will be acquitted.

If you want to hope about anything, hope that the voters aren't as stupid as the Republicans think they are and that there really is a "blue tsunami" next go round.

Do you believe that he is honestly mistaken that Trump's actions are not impeachable? Or do you perhaps believe that he's right and Trump's actions are not actually impeachable?
The short answer is that I think reasonable people could disagree. I believe his actions are impeachable. The long answer will have to wait until I have a better keyboard.

Correction, he CLAIMS he feels a tiny bit guilty about it.

Re: Republicans saying "Trump did wrong" but still voting to acquit/not call witnesses...
Sadly, it sounds that way to a lot of people. There's actually a gigantic difference, but an awful lot of people can't see it.
No, there is no "gigantic difference". There's pretty much no difference at all.

If you are faced with a crime, or other major problem (like presidential abuse of power) that you can take actions to stop, easily, and you chose not to, then you are OK with it, despite any and all rhetoric that you might throw around about how "bad" it was.

Lamar Alexander did not have to sacrifice his first born kid to vote yes on impeachment and/or witnesses. Heck, he's not even sacrificing his political career (since he's retiring).

He was 100% A-OK with Trump abusing power.

I've quoted this line from They Might Be Giants before.

"Can't shake the Devil's hand, and say you're only kidding."

Hope hurts now.
Well, if there is any silver lining, its that the majority of voters who expressed an opinion (including GOP voters) wanted at least SOME witnesses to be called (either direct witnesses, or bogus witnesses like the Bidens).

Hopefully, that might sway a few voters during the upcoming elections... "You wanted witnesses but your republican senator voted against them...". (Admittedly not much to hope for.)

Remember the controversy in this thread over The Hill employing John Soloman to spread pro-Trump propaganda full of lies? Well, the fact that he's no longer a contributor was taken by some as an indication that they'd seen the error of their ways. Evidently not, since their latest opinion piece about the impeachment is written by Ed Rollins - a former Republican campaign consultant, and current head of a pro-Trump PAC.

Someone there certainly likes giving a voice to this kind of propaganda.

When drawing lines in the sand, don't draw them too close to yourself. Leave some room for people who might be allies.

I have no idea about the point here you are trying to make.

Plenty of cynicism about Collins’ motives. Well justified throughout this whole process getting re-elected has been discussed as the prime motivation for how senators on both sides vote. Agree with opinions that in this context her position was likely party sanctioned.

I think its 100% Collin's motives. Romney OTOH I think genuinely hates Trump. Not sure about Murkowski. Its not as if she'll lose in AK either way.
