UK - December 2019 General Election

More info :

Apparently, it's not just a spoon with positive energy, it's also a spoon that belonged to Golda Meir.

Rightly, or wrongly, everyone says it yoori.

Personally, I think it ought to be said oori, but on the other hand there's the actress Una Stubbs, which is definitely pronounced yoona.

I give up: what's the point of having consonants, if no-one will use (yuse?) them properly.

For the sake of resolution, his given name (which is the Hebrew word אורי‎ and which takes the Israeli/Hebrew pronunciation) should indeed be pronounced "OO-ri" - but with the "oo" pronounced as in "took", rather than as in "tool".

Interestingly, the etymology of this name shows that it means "professional charlatan and nutcase"*

* This may not be strictly correct.....

Was good to see some tweets on this topic referencing Randi and Jonny Carson show.In fact most of tweets on the hastag Uri Geller were negative :D

One strange reply to one of mine was "He went through a lot as a child leave him alone" No idea what that meant

Defeat - Callaghan

Defeat - Kinnock

Win - Blair
Win - Blair
Win - Blair
Defeat - Brown

Defeat - Corbyn
Defeat - Corbyn

Spot the pattern.

Only in some English dialects.

Yes - when I wrote that, I realised that in, for example, Blackburn, they'd pronounce the "oo" in "took" and "tool" pretty much identically as the longer "ooooo" sound.

I should have qualified my post with "in received-pronunciation British English" or something similar :)

Spot the pattern.

Yes, four losses followed by three wins - if Jeremy Corbyn stays on, he'll lead Labour to three emphatic election victories :D

Yes, with this sort of activity from such a group, it's a complete mystery as to why Labour didn't clean up across the country.....

You ever heard of jokes, Old Mother Hubbard? This city isn't daft enough to think folks like you will ever see the light, but there's nothing wrong with trying to cheer each other up before Boris slides himself inside us sans lube.

It's all from the proven playbook of the Australian and American conserve parties. Appeal to feelings and disregard logic and facts. Refer to my sig. Imelda Marcos had it worked out years ago.

Pretty much, and people will continue to buy into it. A combination of desperation, naivety, ignorance... and for the longtime Conservative voters, plain out outright nonce-sense thinking.
