UK - December 2019 General Election

If my experience of Labour Party membership in the 1980s is anything to go by, a devastating defeat in the polls is a badge of honour, a clear indication that their policies are the right ones.

But true. Hard Line political ideologues often seem to prefer ideological purity to winning elections.
They have a a hard time dealing with the idea that a majority of the population might not be as militant as they are.

No that was caused by the Falklands war.

Before that she was incredibly unpopular with everyone including Conservatives and it is very likely she wouldn't have won the next GE.

And of course that was one recent own goal Corbyn failed to score on May's government.

During the Cumbrian floods, where HMG was failing in the primary role of a government, which is to provide relief during emergencies, Corbyn - instead of attacking the government on their handling of the emergency, decided to suggest that Argentina should have joint sovereignty of the Falklands.

Is that 'edited for time' as in 'edited for time, no wait it was obvious satire, that's it, satire' or is James Cleverley not involved?

Here is the BBC's statement.

Once again they accept that they made an inadvertent mistake which just happened to make Johnson look less of an idiot.

Others are saying that the edit was far more complex than a simple snip for time, and that the easy and obvious way to snip out the repetition would have left the laughter in.

I wonder if he's ever been to the Falklands? I have, and that is a monstrous suggestion. Regardless of how we got here, the present situation is that there is a community there of English-speaking people of British background who have been there for four or five generations or more. It is their home. They are not Argentinian. Their society and culture and way of life are not Argentinian. He might as well propose to give joint soveregnty of New Zealand to Papua New Guinea.

I have been to the Falklands too. I was there when the shooting match was on.

I agree with Corbyn.
We should have just let them keep the lot back in the 80s.

For every extra pound the Tories have pledged to spend, Labour has pledged twenty eight. Source: today's Guardian front page. The Lib Dems have also pledged to spend about twenty times as much as the Tories.
Given that the "pledged" Conservative spending is ~£1.5B that's not difficult. Especially with the benefits of scrapping the who Brexit debacle.

Nope, not even close.

It's due to the government's "Austerity" programme which is why the problems are worse in areas where the austerity programme has hit hardest and not in areas where immigration is highest (though there is some overlap between the two).

Immigrants, and especially EU immigrants are net contributors to the exchequer so if the government had chosen to continue to fund public services properly, they could have afforded to do so.

Instead they chose to cut funding to public services, especially local services, in real terms for reasons of political dogma and to give significant tax cuts to the richest people in the UK. IOW the usual Tory priorities of rewarding the rich and punishing the poor.

The fact that the effects of the under-funding also allowed immigrants to be blamed and scapegoated is just an added bonus from a Conservative perspective.

Hey, those low paid, disabled or unemployed people needed to be punished for selling all those subprime mortgages, bundling them up and trading them at unwarranted profit and thus precipitating the banking crash. It's only common sense.

@Andrew_Adonis Let's hope it chokes on the Conservatives, preferably while swallowing the last bite.

Well then the Argentinians can just ship in some Spanish speaking Argentinians and 4 or 5 generations later everything will be fine and it will be Argentinian.

Really didn't think you would be an apologist for colonialism.

In large part due to all the immigrants increasing the country's population.
About half of population growth has been down to birth outstripping deaths. Net migration accounts for the other half, of which about half was EU, half non-EU. The latter was supposed to be controlled by the people who are now claiming they're going to be better at controlling it in future.

If you open a twitter link in a private window you can read the tweet. I read quite a lot while I was suspended.

The immigrants have more children than the population that's lived here for generations, so again the rise in population is largely due to immigration.

Any hard evidence?

Yes there is some evidence:

https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopula...ins/parentscountryofbirthenglandandwales/2018

Or more accurately women born overseas have more children than women born in the UK - nothing about going back generations:

The estimated total fertility rate (TFR) for women born outside the UK rose slightly from 1.97 children per woman in 2017 to 1.99 in 2018, the first increase since 2012

The TFR for UK-born women decreased from 1.71 children per woman in 2017 to 1.63 in 2018, reaching the lowest level since 2004 when figures were first calculated.

What puzzles me is that ceptimus and xenophobes seem to want an increasingly elderly society where fewer and fewer working age people are supporting a larger and larger retired population. They also seem to think that someone born in the UK to a mother born overseas is less British (or possibly more accurately, English) than someone born in the UK to a mother born in the UK. A quick glance at sporting teams might scotch that idea.

Then again, these figures are presented without adjusting for other possible factors.

Some good news in those figures for the little-Englanders:

However, today’s figures also show the first decrease in the proportion of live births in England and Wales to non-UK-born mothers since 1990. And the first decrease for non-UK-born fathers since our time series for them began in 2008

Then again perhaps not, after all someone born to fifth generation immigrants from India, Pakistan, Jamaica or Nigeria is still a worthy oriental gentleperson.

edited to add....

Figures apply only to England and Wales. Scotland and Northern Ireland aren't included but IMO their population is sufficiently small that it's unlikely that it will reverse the position.
