The Trump Presidency: Part 18

I watched the whole Ken Burns "The Vietnam War", it's quite the documentary - very long.

However, he suggest the current polarization in the USA has it roots in that War. The NYT and Guardian both have articles on it

That seems like a reach. A "culture war" gets its expression through an institutionalized two-party system. Multi-polar/party systems are allowed to have more moderating influences. In the recent past, even post-Vietnam, the two parties closely resembled each other because the median voter model more or less held. Candidates could capture more votes by lurching toward the center in the general election. That model doesn't really hold as much anymore because moderate candidates cannot mobilize voters needed to win their primary election.

Again, politicians who compromise and occasionally vote, say, with the NRA, will get a reduced rating from pro gun control groups, and then their primary opponent will cudgel them with that report card. Since the district is "safe" for a political party (through gerrymandering or happenstance) you're going to get more polarization, and that's reflected more in the House than the Senate. But it's also percolated up to the presidential level.

There's an article today in The Atlantic, which I haven't finished reading, but it discusses our unique primary system:

Americans rarely pause to consider just how bizarre the presidential nominating process has become. No other major democracy routinely uses primaries to choose its political candidates, nor did the Founders of this country intend for primaries to play a role in the republican system they devised.

The war in Vietnam coincided with -- and perhaps accelerated -- realignment, which, again, brought more ideological coherence to the parties. Now, you could say the war changed our presidential primary system ('68 with Humphrey).

This is pretty weak tea. The hands of every modern president are absolutely drenched in blood. It's unavoidable so long as the US continues to operate as an imperialist power.

Trump's grave sin, at least as far as neoliberals are concerned, is that his killing the wrong people and is generally uncouth about it. They prefer Obama's gentlemanly style when it comes to making policy decisions that result in the large scale death.

Sure, every President gives orders that result in battlefield deaths. The writer's point is that Trump has allied himself with and essentially given a blank check to bloodthirsty dictators with no benefit to the U.S. Trump didn't have to allow Turkey to invade Syria, killing thousands of Kurds and leaving hundreds of thousands homeless; Trump doesn't have to back Saudi Arabia unreservedly when it attacks Yemeni civilians and even murders an American journalist; Trump doesn't have to support Putin against Ukraine. Etc.

More corruption appears to be uncovered:

A CBS News investigation has uncovered a possible pay-for-play scheme involving the Republican National Committee and President Donald Trump's nominee for ambassador to the Bahamas. Emails obtained by CBS News show the nominee, San Diego billionaire Doug Manchester, was asked by the RNC to donate half a million dollars as his confirmation in the Senate hung in the balance, chief investigative correspondent Jim Axelrod reports.

Trump Tweets

Just finished a very good & cordial meeting at the White House with Jay Powell of the Federal Reserve. Everything was discussed including interest rates, negative interest, low inflation, easing, Dollar strength & its effect on manufacturing, trade with China, E.U. & others, etc.

Doesn't negative interest amount to bribing his cronies?

Did anyone else see the video of the motorcade forming up to go to the hospital? That was not a routine trip.

Do you have a link? Presidential motorcades are always blocks long. Police stop traffic at every intersection in advance. Sometimes a helicopter hovers overhead. An ambulance travels close to the Beast (the presidential limo, not the occupant). What looked non-routine about this one?

The stop for two Big Mac Extra Value Meals on the way to the ER.

:D

In my late teens and early twenties I have had the pleasure of driving in Presidential and Vice Presidential motorcades a couple of times. They were awesome to be a part of. The motorcade drives at maybe 40 mph tops, but the motorcycles probably drive 100 mph on the outside to stop traffic at the intersections and after the motorcade passes they jump back on their cycles to catch up and pass the motorcade. The motorcycle cops absolutely love it.

They were rushing rather than just loading up. It wasn't planned or put on his schedule. It was a sunny day outside and he wasn't golfing. The norm.

I just note that if there was a true emergency they would take him to GWU hospital, six blocks away with a Level 1 trauma center.

But if this were routine and minor, it would have handled in the White House's own medical facility.

If this were routine and planned, it would have been announced as the annual physical is always announced. The hospital staff were not informed with was going to happen as they usually are when the President comes. They normally section off part of the hospital and staff need to be informed of that in advance.

I guess he was only there for 40 minutes two hours though, so it probably was not anything serious.

I have no CT to offer, but this current visit did seem a bit odd.

ETA: Press Watch: Why was Trump rushed to the hospital? Count on the media to swallow official lies

I agree, I don't think it was something detrimental. Knowing Trump he probably swallowed a crayon or got a penny stuck in his nose trying to show Melanie his "awesome new thing he can do! Watch!"

You’re not far off.

CNN is claiming this is an actual x-ray of the President’s skull from Saturday:
