I'm ok with a bland super smart white guy with character and integrity. Especially one who is gay. The Nathan Lane character from The Birdcage is not going to fly. Obama was electable because he wasn't Jessie Jackson or someone who was stereotypically black.

Every time I've heard him speak he's demonstrated a superior grasp of the issues. He doesn't frighten anyone. He's not staging a revolution. It's a return to sanity and away from Crazy.

I like Warren's politics a lot more, but I strongly believe that Mayor Pete would be running away with the nomination and he would crush Trump. That is if he wasn't openly gay. My theory is that each President is a reaction to the last President. Boring is kind of appealing after 4 years of Mr. Whackadoodle.

I think there is a lot of this going on and explains Biden's popularity. Many of us are craving a no drama boring presidency. I think Mayor Pete would make a great president, he is both smart and has integrity, the opposite of Trump. I don't know how much being openly gay hurts him but he is also relatively young and inexperienced.

He's not radical relative to what the American people want either. He's only "radical" in the dishonest smear-jobs flung at him by the corporatists, whose line you're repeating for them.

Sure he is. He is more protectionist than any other Democratic hopefuls. He believes in Rent Control. These two things are nearly universally thought of as really bad ideas by economists of every stripe.

Why? What's his appeal? He strikes me as Biden Junior. Bland personality, politics status quo in the worst ways. You'd think his being gay would make him more interesting but it doesn't; if anything "Mayor Pete" manages to make being gay boring.

The aggregate polling I have seen on Health care reform shows strong support for options that keep private insurance through companies.

Running on the idea that the most people like on an issue is might help.

Looks like Tulsi's dropped out of her Congressional race. Also, that she had a meeting with Wall Street executives about potentially running as a third party candidate, if Fox Business is to be believed.

just like HRC foresaw in her crystal ball ...

Yep. Centrists have to hide their centrism to get elected, because what they believe and plan to do is radically different from what the voters want.

Even though I don't agree with her politics, I do appreciate that Amy Klobuchar is at least reliably honest about what she believes.

Every time I've heard him speak he's impressed the hell out of me. He's not as liberal as many people would like though. If he wasn't gay, I'm pretty sure he would be the frontrunner. Eloguent, erudite, clean cut, a military veteran, middle America.

Personally, I'm still waiting to hear why he fought in favor of white supremacist police, and fired or demoted everyone that worked to expose their efforts to keep local black people off of his city's police force.

(And I don't even think that black cops are better than white ones per se, but outright "white people will rule this town" style bigotry is an extremely bad sign.)

I don't think that's a fair description. He backed his police force. He was a relatively new mayor and didn't handle it well. But I don't believe for a second that he supports racist policies. I like him. A lot. But I find it very hard imagining the country electing a gay President That's a much bigger leap than electing a woman.

Indeed there was a conspiracy among a few police officers in South Bend to get rid of the black police chief. But the big assumption is that the young, new mayor was aware of what was happening behind closed doors. He came in eager to please and probably a bit naive.

To him they were just white police complaining about a superior. They put the pressure on him and he gave in just a few months into his term.

This rundown on the police force history doesn't paint a good picture. The most charitable version is that he is naive and ineffectual at enacting his lauded platitudes.

Interestingly for Sanders, people say they are even less likely to vote for someone over 70 years old or a socialist.

Beto is now officially delusionally insane:

Beto O'Rourke says he expects Americans to surrender their guns

Beto O'Rourke dismissed criticisms of his sweeping gun control proposal, telling CBS News in an interview Thursday night that he expects gun owners will go along with his plan to institute a "mandatory buyback" of high-powered rifles.

"If we're able to pass mandatory buybacks and I'm able to sign that into law, then I fully expect our fellow Americans to turn in their AR-15s and their AK-47s," the former Texas congressman said.

"Okay Democrats all you literally have to do to win this election is be less crazy to the average voter (key word here) then Donald Trump."

Elizabeth Warren: "I think taxpayers should pay for gender reassignment surgery for felons in prison!"

Bernie Sanders: "I think the Boston Marathon Bomber should be able to vote from Prison!"

Beto: "Take the guns and tax the churches!"

Harris: "Okay before we get started I want to tell everybody what my preferred pronouns are..."

And before the waves of "OH SO THOSE AREN"T GOOD THING I BET YOU'RE A SECRET TRUMP SUPPORTER WHY WON'T YOU JUST SAY THE ORANGE MAN IS BAD AND STOP TALKIGN>>>>" hit... my point is you're trying to win an election against Trump and those are the points you think you need to hit?

Democrats. You've already got the atheist gun hating transgender felon in prison vote. It's like you don't understand you're trying to win an election, not a popularity contest among people who are already on your side.

I think churches and gun owners should be taxed to pay for gender reassignment surgery for the Boston Marathon bomber!

Seriously, the strategy should be to court moderates and let Trump hang himself.

I do too (not necessarily literally all added up like that you get my point), I just have enough self awareness to not make an issue when I'm running for President.

Of course, the problem is that the liberals vote in the primaries more than the moderates do. Mrs. Shemp was involved in a couple of Democratic presidential campaigns and never fails to remind me of this. So the primary campaign tends to be liberal, then swing back toward the center after the nomination is secured.

It actually is something like a popularity contest among democrats right now.

I hate to break it to ya', but this is the primary, and the general election against Trump is whole different election.

Echoes what Bill Maher said last night. Did you get this from him?

I think they should withhold some of their side proposals, though I won't lose sleep over inmates gaining rights.

And I hate to break it to you, but that's Joe's point.

When they stake out goofy positions that might appeal to a demographic that's already in the Dem pocket, they increase the chance of defeat in the general. We can't afford that -- at least not those of us who think that defeating Trump is priority #1.
