Our institutions are hardwired for smooth transitions of power. Once the machinery of transition gets going, the inertia is hard to stop. Our government is well practiced at this.
As vile and disgusting a human being as judge rapist Kavanagh is, I don't see him nullifying an election when there is no certification for any other candidate than Trump's opponent. Keep in mind the Chief Justice Roberts has sided against Trump in the past.
Assuming the Electoral College votes align with the popular vote, it doesn't matter anyway. As Trump well knows, it's the Electoral College that matters. Do you really see five of the nine SCOTUS justices voting to nullify the Electoral College vote? What would happen next if they did? The Electoral College has to elect the president. If they nullify the Electoral College vote, that doesn't mean the College will then vote for Trump.
