The Trump Presidency 15

I'm sure you know, but Trump might have his mind blown by seeing the true relative size of Greenland. Just for fun, and from an animated Mercator projection. About the size of Argentina? Still pretty big, mind:

I was in the process of mentally composing a Mercator Projection joke post, that would have been incredible! YUUUGE! Thanks for spoiling everything.

The greatest economy in history! Uh oh, it may be tanking.

My love affair with Kim. Uh oh, they're still firing missiles, good bye Nobel peace prize.

Stock it to China with tariffs. Uh oh, they're not playing along and even my own team is getting testy.

Trailing in the polls, fake though they may be.

What's a stable genius to do when the world fails to recognize greatness? I know, let's buy Greenland.

Maybe show him this and get him to buy Mexico:

I really think all it would take is someone physically near him to suggest it's possible to float down off the White House roof with an umbrella and he'd try it. "You know what would be an amazing entrance for a press conference?" and twenty minutes later they're swearing in Pence.

He's already demonstrated that he doesn't know how umbrellas work, so that's entirely plausible.
There's also the episode of Red Dwarf in which a character's confidence and paranoia physically manifested, and Confidence tried to convince him that he was so awesome he didn't need a helmet in outer space.

40% of the population will support any idiot in the White House because he has an "R" a the end of his name.
Same for the Democrats;40% of the population will support any idiot with a "D" at the end ofhis name.
It's the other 20% who decide elections.
That is US politics 101:The swing voters decide elections.

That is, as you should well know, a distinct and very significantly inaccurate oversimplification of reality.

Problem with Marxism is that sounds really good on paper but fails miserably when put into practice.
ANd yeah, I get tired of the whole: "COmmunsim is a great idea, it's just that the right people have not tried it",
And, aside, from it's failure as a economic system, there is the enormous body count Marxism racked up in the last century.
Of course the response to that is who "Stalin/Mao[Pol Pot were not really Communists".

Because they weren't. But, then, this is a subject that's a bit annoying. I've ended up "defending" communism far too many times against wildly misguided criticisms, which is actually a bit mind-boggling to me when actual communism has plenty of actual serious criticisms that can be rightfully leveled against it. Similarly, totalitarianism has plenty of actual serious criticisms that can be rightfully levelled against it and criticizing communism for the faults of totalitarianism just keeps the waters muddy and leaves totalitarianism off the hook.

Anyways, random news time.

July was the hottest month ever measured at 1.2 C above preindustrial: Dangerously near 1.5 C Limit

Still a problem that the Trump administration wants to ignore.

Truck drives into row of Jewish protesters at ICE detention center in Rhode Island

Mmm. After watching, honestly, I don't fault the truck driver for being frustrated (looked like that to me, at least), much as I'd say that it was poor decision-making in action and good that no one actually got hurt. Guards employing pepper spray against the protestors, on the other hand, is a more serious problem. Using pepper spray is acceptable in self-defense. This wasn't remotely self defense and opens those who used it to being prosecuted as criminals.

Speaking of ICE, though... Feds had probable cause to arrest plant management in Mississippi immigration raids, but didn't

Quite a bit of "probable cause," for that matter. This just goes to show, again, that "upholding the law" is not what they were actually there to do.

Federal court slams Georgia for security failures
and banned use of paperless voting machines for 2020

I'm mildly surprised at the ruling, but... after the overwhelmingly Republican caused electoral issues in Georgia, I'd say that this is a step in the right direction.

Pelosi Statement on Israel’s Decision to Block Members of Congress from Entering the Country

“As one who loves Israel, I am deeply saddened by the news that Israel has decided to prevent Members of Congress from entering the country.

“Last month, Israeli Ambassador Dermer stated that, ‘Out of respect for the U.S. Congress and the great alliance between Israel and America, we would not deny entry to any Member of Congress into Israel.’ This is a sad reversal and is deeply disappointing. I pray that the Government of Israel will reverse that denial.

“Israel’s denial of entry to Congresswomen Tlaib and Omar is a sign of weakness, and beneath the dignity of the great State of Israel. The President’s statements about the Congresswomen are a sign of ignorance and disrespect, and beneath the dignity of the Office of the President.”

Trump, of course, was somewhat joyful about part of the US government being denied access to our ally, in his usual petty way.

I'm confused.

Trump says China is paying the tariffs, that the costs are not being passed through to consumers.

Trump delayed the Sept 1 tariffs until Dec 15 because he did not want the resulting additional cost to consumers to adversely impact the Christmas shopping season.

So, the tariffs don't affect consumers but they affect consumers.

I misspoke, it's not me that is confused.

In the "there's a tweet for everything" column, there is a Trump tweet from 2018 about how "winning trade wars is easy." And then one from the other day that says, "China is hard."

Once again, who knew it could be so complicated?

Great news! Tonight, we broke the all-time attendance record previously held by Elton John at #SNHUArena in Manchester, New Hampshire!

This is a tour de force which is equivalent to Reagan and Clinton but has much bigger audiences and he excites them much more. He is one of our great campaigners which is how he defeats a hostile media. They don’t get it.

This is more than an hour before and it is as full as a playoff game for a rally for
@realDonaldTrump
. No one has ever gotten these kinds of crowds. This was the reason he won in 2016 and will again. Don’t tell the dummies in the Fake Media.

He statement was basically that they haven't affected consumers, and there was no indication that they would affect consumers, but he was delaying the tariffs just in case they affected consumers, but he was sure they wouldn't.

The State Department's watchdog issued a scathing report on how Trump appointees treated career State Department employees in the bureau that oversees international organizations

Article embedded in tweet, with highlights (and a link to the report itself) in subsequent tweets. Worth noting is the last tweet in the thread:

Dem Rep. Eliot Engel, chairman of House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued statement condemning these actions and called on Moley to resign or be fired.

This report is part of a ‘broader inquiry’ into politically motivated reprisals at State and Engel said ‘there is more to come’
