The Trump Presidency 15

That brings up a bit of a fascinating point. If Trump were to pass away, God forbid, then what would his plaque or tombstone say?

"I died better than most lived. The best life, no one lived better. I'm not even dead."

I think he'd love "People are saying I was great."

That would go great with an image of that smug ass smile he has on his face from time to time laser printed on the tombstone, but not all that well. Like one of those "Top 10 Biggest Tattoo Disasters" lists. Trump looking like pepe the frog or something.

The Dow goes up and down all of the time but today:

The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 729 points, or 2.77%, 25,551, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index dropped 82 points, or 2.8%, to 2,844.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite plunged 246 points, or 3.07%, to 7,769.

I think it's safe to say that no one is hoping for a recession, and hopefully this all recovers. It does look like we're in for a bit of turbulence though.

The Dow comes in and it goes out. It always goes in, then it goes out. … You can't explain that.

I am.

Not that I want people to be financially harmed, but the economy does go in cycles, and recessions are inevitable. (In the long run, they may even help the economy adjust to various changes in society.)

If a recession happens, its better to happen sooner than later, because:
- Trump is hastening the onset of a recession with things like Trade wars. I'd much rather the recession happen sooner so that he's in office when it happens, rather than having it happen when the Democrats have taken over
- The longer that we go without a recession, the worse it will be... The Republicans have driven up the deficit, launched trade wars, etc. The longer things go on, the more trouble it will be to dig out of the next recession.

Again poor people are Trump's biggest base. I question the logic of hoping something makes more of them.

The states that went Red already are in a recession. What is the factory that shut down 20 years ago going to make less money?

While you're absolutely right, I have to agree with Seg. The people that are his base are going to vote for him no matter what, but educated people that have so far been thinking, "Well, he's right. The economy is doing well", will not have that aspect to consider anymore.

I love North Dakota in that we're pretty isolated from the rest of the US. The recessions really don't hit us that hard, but I think Seg had it spot on. Take this talking point away from him now, way before the elections, and perhaps we can do the biggest damage to him ever. Damage to his ego.

The Market thing is one of those things I'm woefully ignorant of. I know a Recession is supposed to be bad, the way everybody is talking about it today -- what I want to know (in fairly simple terms) is why is it bad?

because the economy is shrinking. People are getting poorer. Government revenues fall at the same time as spending on social security rises.

To VASTLY (like seriously) over simplify it, a lot of our economy is dependent on growth. Business, investments, even semi-related things like urban planning are usually based on a system that is going to get bigger.

It's not the end of the world when it doesn't happen, that's why a recession isn't as bad as a depression, but unlike a depression which effects the whole economy recessions tend to cause things like wages to stall out, hiring to slow or even stop, stuff like that. Jobs get harder to find, if your area doesn't have a particular business it's unlikely to get one.

Basically it's a period where everybody is playing is super-safe. Which sucks if your "status quo" was already crappy when the "Oh crap everybody just... don't do anything" mentality takes over.

On top of this it can also prevent companies from spending more, or expanding their businesses. It increases unemployment as companies shed "fat" to keep profits up, and it deters companies from trying out different markets.

I should think he will be best served if his tombstone prominently outlines the penalties for vandalising a grave marker in whichever municipality is unfortunate enough to have to inter him.

Good point, maybe we should launch him toward Mars on Space Force One.

Give him the OBL treatment and just quietly drop him in the water.

Having just watched last night's Colbert, and the "trucks" ... "hands/computers" ... "two and a half Mexican border guards" rally speech I can only pity Trump's handlers. They're doing a great job, except they can't stop him speaking in public. Is there any way that could be arranged?

Surely, surely, even dyed-in-the-wool Republicans are finding him increasingly weird? Like, even if you're totally evangelical and creationist and all, wouldn't you find it odd if a member of your church started claiming that woodlice are god's chosen creatures?

I thought Trump had hit peak weirdness months ago, maybe a year+ ago, but no.

How does it end? Where is peak Trumpian weirdness? Suppose he dropped his pants at a rally, just to prove he has a normal willy ... would he get away with that on Fox? Seems likely to me, the way things are going.
