This isn't primarily a gun-issue. Guns are part of the issue, but primarily, what you have is a right wing terrorism issue.
 
As noted upthread "thoughts and prayers" is simply a way of saying, "I have to pretend I care but in reality I don't give a **** and can't be bothered to lift a finger to actually do anything useful." When my in-laws were dying there were the "They have my thoughts and prayers." people... versus the "Can I bring over some dinner for them? Give them a lift to their doctor's appointment? Look after them for an afternoon so you and your wife are free?" people. The most offensive part was that the former generally spent a lot of their time congratulating themselves on how religious and moral they were.

I'm seeing it used now as an attempt to flip the blame. I've seen a few comments saying that "Thought's and prayers" is appropriate because that is civil and kind. Commenter then goes on to blame the shooting on the lack of civility and kindness in America, blame on our disconnect with god.

They build a strawman out of the criticism of the objection to the "thoughts and prayers" response and run with it. I expect to see more thoughts and prayers popping back up in comments soon.

Hey, in the end it's easier than actually doing something, and they have to find a way to feel good about themselves. Whatever it takes to defend the meaningless gesture.

Obviously their god did NOT bless them. Quite the opposite, that god allowed a bunch of them to be shot. Nice god.

Didn't you say that Trump's seizure of newly defined contraband machine guns without compensation was a good thing? Trump did something after a mass shooting, the NRA sort of, kind of, objected a little bit, to Trump's action.

Next are you going to say that gun owners usually don't kill anyone therefore.....?

AK type rifles are readily available in 7.62x39 (.310"), 5.45x39 (.220") and 5.56x45 (.224"). :)
 
Police were stationed in the immediate vicinity of the bar outside which the shooting took place. They engaged and had killed the shooter less than a minute after the attack began, but the gunman still managed to kill 9 people and wound 20-some more in the space of those seconds.
 
Curious that one of the victims was the shooter's 22-year-old sister. It hasn't been said and I presume it's not known whether she was accompanying any of the other killed or wounded victims or survivors of the shooting at the time. The type of weapon used, the amount of ammunition the shooter was carrying, and the fact that he was wearing body armor, all suggest a planned attack, however, not an impulse or anger outburst; i.e. the guy clearly didn't just get upset at something and pull a pistol out of his pocket.

Could you Americans please slow down the mass shootings - we're running out of thoughts & prayers over here.

A couple of older people have got very sore knees.

If you look at the raw numbers and money most of the hardcore lobbyist groups throw around in Washington the NRA is incredibly small potatoes and their membership numbers, even if we take them at face value and I certainly don't (on account of I was apparently a member of the NRA for almost 4 years and literally didn't know it, so I question how many active members they actually have) is only 5 million, a tiny fraction of people even if you're only counting gun owners.

If the NRA can stall out one of the biggest political debates in modern American history with the piddling amount of money and power it has, the real big leaguers like the US Chamber of Commerce, the American Realtor Association, and AARP would all have solid gold palaces staffed with virgins built for them on the far side of the moon.

Nothing to see here folks. The NRA has no influence on the intransigence of American politicians on this issue nor the attitudes of voters.
 
Potential correction to the above - NBC is saying another one of the fatalities was the gunman's sister's boyfriend and the two of them were found shot in a vehicle, but I'm not sure what their source is.
 
Unlike the El Paso shooter, the Dayton shooter may not have been an alt-right extremist. From CNN:

Authorities have found writings linked to Dayton, Ohio, shooting suspect Connor Betts that show he had an interest in killing people, two federal law enforcement sources told CNN. A preliminary assessment of the writings, found during the execution of a search warrant, did not indicate any racial or political motive, the sources said.

At an afternoon press conference, police said they are looking for any indication of motives.

“We're always looking at what could have motivated such a horrific action as this, and like I said this morning, we're interviewing dozens of people and going through a lot of different electronic evidence, other evidence to try to determine that. We don't have that answer yet,” Lt. Col. Matt Carper, Dayton Deputy Chief of Police said. “But speculating at this point would be premature.”
