How long before Trump fully embraces "round them *all* up and send them back where they came from" rhetoric? I mean, really embraces it? Looks smug for chants going up in crowds?
Kind of lame that in recent raids they had 2,000 names and managed to nab just 35 people. What did that cost per person detained, I wonder. Also it's apparently almost impossible to keep the Border Patrol adequately staffed. Recruitment fails miserably. Per USA Today (in March):
Border Patrol struggling to hire, keep agents, but may never get 5,000 Trump ordered
The Trump administration wants the agency to add 5,000 new agents, but two-thirds of applicants fail the polygraph test.
Something like this has been going on for 8 years, under Republican control of Congress. In fact the number given at the time was 7,500 new agents.
Maybe the Trump Administration could get some wall money by not approving, say, $297 million to a consultant to recruit agents. The company came up with 3 new hires IIRC. FFS, you could give all new hires $500K signing bonuses and do way better than this useless consultant.
I've got to wonder how drastically the feds would have to lower their standards to get anything like 5,000-7,500 agents.
Anyway, this critical shortage is adding to the feelings of overwhelmed federal enforcement agencies on the border, which has to be bad for morale and IMO has the potential to help set the stage for abuse and unprofessional treatment of detainees. It contributes to a siege mentality. Meanwhile enormous sums are siphoned off to private contractors who $770 per child detained.
Got a little carried away here but I do home some of this comes up as talking points when Trump says Dems want open borders. Throw back at Trump the abysmal hiring stats and the unconscionable fees paid to contractors.

That's John Kelly, acting inspector general of CBP, a forensic bean counter and bless his heart for that. Not to be confused with Gen. John Kelly. The Border Patrol, a component of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, faces a crisis in hiring, training and retaining agents as well as keeping track of what exactly its 19,555 agents are doing at any given time, according to internalwatchdogreports. ...
As the Border Patrol struggles to maintain current workforce levels, its greatest challenge will be President Trump's executive order from two years ago calling for the hiring of an additional 5,000 agents to seal off the southern border.
Since that Jan. 25, 2017, order, what should have been a flood of hiring has been, at best, a trickle. In 2018, the agency added 118 Border Patrol agents, with only three stationed along the southern border. ..
Even if the agency succeeds in recruiting and hiring thousands of agents, it wouldn't be able to train them properly, Kelly said.
