The Trump Presidency 15

Seriously, are they saying this about AOC or Omar? How the **** are the GOP going to square this with the ridiculous apologetics they have trotted out?

Why would they have to square it?

They have been denying things that have been captured on videotape for a couple of years.

Plus, we have reached the point that when asked about Speaker Pelosi’s comment that thepresident’s statements show that “ his plan to makeAmerica Great again are really just to make America white gain,” President Trump sad, “Well, that’s just a very racist statement, somebody that would say that. So, Speaker Pelosi said, “Make America white again.” Let me tell you, that’s a very racist — that’s a very racist statement. I’m surprised she’d say that.”
If he can respond to a direct question with a schoolyard taunt of “I know you are but what am I,” and not be taken to task by anyone, then why would anything ever need to be squared again?

Dictionaries need to use that picture in their definitions of "smug".

It’s almost like Roy Cohn, Roger Stone et al studied history...

Maybe they should have read the biography all the way to the end!

Law enforcement and the military are strongly in favour of the GOP in general and President Trump in particular. There won't be a civil war IMO.

Yes there may be tens or hundreds of people killed by racists who are "protecting America". The GOP will consider this an acceptable price.

Trump's support in the military is not that strong. Granted this is an old poll. But firing Mattis cannot have helped Trump here. Bolton is not liked by general officers at all.

From what I have seen, the higher in rank you go the less support for Trump there is.

Looks like they are out of the closet now.

They are worse off if they oppose Trump. If they come out against it, they will lose support from their voters and democratic voters are not going to step up and replace them for the representative's bravery.

It is easy to ask a sacrifice of others when you are not making one.

Support for the GOP is nearly twice that for the Democrats in the military

But who troops will vote for is less clear. Almost half of those who responded to the poll said they do not affiliate with either major political party, continuing a trend in Military Times polls from recent years away from close ties to either Republicans or Democrats.

Despite that, roughly 45 percent of troops polled said they intend to back Republican candidates, even though less than a third say they are registered with the party.

Similarly, about 28 percent said they plan to vote for Democrats in the upcoming contests, even though only about one-fifth consider themselves members of that party.

Law enforcement leans Republican. More so if probation officers are excluded.

Civil unrest, at the very least.

Which then plays to the GOP view that people on the left are violent threats to US democracy and should be treated as such....

It’s almost as if 150 guys in suits are standing around a lunatic with a revolver. Most want to rush him, but no one wants to be first.

Ike: "Step aside lawdog or I swear we'll tear you apart."
*Wyatt pulls his gun and points it directly between Ike's eyes*
Wyatt: "Then you die first, understand me? Your friends will get me in a rush but not before I turn your head into a canoe."
Billy: "He's bluffing, let's rush him."
Ike *Petrified* "NO! He ain't bluffing."
Wyatt: "You're not as dumb as you look Ike."

Ugh, now every time I watch that movie I'll think of Trump.

My only point was that being part of a crowd saying "Somebody rush him, he can't stop all of us" is a lot easier then being the guy who rushes him.

Listen... the last thing I want (especially since things got heated in the other thread) is to come across as defending the Republicans. They have as much moral obligation to deal with Trump as the Democrats do. Loyalty to party over loyalty to country, or creating some sort of world view where "What's good for the party is good for the country" are terrible and inexcusable.

But on some tiny level I do get that telling a career politician "Sure just throw yourself on this grenade to save the squad, destroying everything you worked for in years, perhaps decades of political work" is easier said then done.

And the people that want them to do it the most (democrats) benefit the most from it. It just isn't a situation that lends itself to compromise.

I'd have some sympathy for that position if it weren't for the fact that:

  1. Senators have a 6-year term, staggered in 1/3s. That means 2/3rds of them won't have to face the wrath of the electorate any time soon, and by that time, we'll (hopefully) have moved on from the Trump era
  2. Incumbents are re-elected a ridiculously high percentage of the time, even if they're complete ********.
  3. While such an action might alienate some people, right now, it would draw in more voters that it repels. Take a look at how many Democrats miss John McCain now, after having opposed him when he ran for President.

Comparing this to someone pointing a gun at your head is a ridiculous analogy.

Particularly when we have recent examples of people actually tackling actual gunmen to compare it to.

Here is an idea of how democrats could provide an incentive to Republicans to turn against trump.

Every representative that pulls an Amash will get the Hasert rule suspended for one vote.
