The Green New Deal

I doubt she thought the bill would ever reach the Senate and the truth is, it didn't. It was a sham vote.

I can't think of anything more literally "reaching the Senate" then the Senate voting on it.

And there's a certain parity to a sham proposal getting a sham vote.

And did she seriously expect McConnell and the rest of the Senate to go easy on her, just because she's got a lot of Facebook likes?

Blah blah blah blah blah blah

Do you honestly think ANY of this matters?

When there is a vote, and only a vote, on a bill like this, it is nothing but a sham. No hearings, no witnesses, no evidence to present means that there was no serious consideration. It was a political stunt and everyone knows it. Even those trying to defend Mitch's actions know that it was just a stunt.

The bill itself was a political stunt. Senator McConnell simply repaid in kind. What did AOC think was going to happen?

Concession noted.

I've been pretty clear that I don't think any of this matters. Do you honestly think HR 109 *does* matter? Because I can probably find two score US Senators who think otherwise.

1. No concession made.
2. I think that some of the details in HR109 matter. Which really was all the bill was about.

But you know all this Prestige bscause you're not this obtuse even if others might say you are. You understand that hundreds of bills are introduced every session and that probably 80 percent never get a hearing let alone get voted on.

I know you know all this. Or am I wrong?

Its pathetic.

Politicians use climate change as the playing board in a stupid game of political points-scoring while the planet plunges ever onwards towards its demise. You have to go back almost 2000 years to AD64 to find a worse example of leaders completely disregarding the death and destruction about to be visited on the people.

Its sickening to watch.

All I saw was McConnell trying to prove that he is the top dog and that he could smack AOC. That bill could have been her GND, or about electoral reform, or about licensing changes for dog-catchers, or anything at all. He would have tried to squash it just the same out of sheer spite. He is nasty and spiteful, and as cunning and disease-ridden as a ****-house rat. This is his style of power-play.

The important point is that AOC knows this. And she is going to be making PR hay out of it from now on. Because here is McConnell, supposedly the doyen of the right for "America advancing" publicly killing off any attempt to actually do so. AOC has plenty of coverage by the media... And he is coming across as the reactionary repressive he is.

There will be more of this to follow - more progressive measures being shot down by McConnell. So this is simply the opening shot in a long war.

Agreed. I'm convinced that at this point we are not facing climate change, but climate catastrophe.

It seems to me that the US has allowed corporate money to enter it's political process and the result of that is that politics are now in the pocket of vested interests. And that means that the US will never again implement a radical vision like the original New Deal or a radical change to climate-friendly technology or infrastructure. Simply because new things compete with the old things and the old things are owned by the people who own the political parties.

No, it didn't continue the conversation. The Senate didn't hold any hearings, seek testimony or propose a single amendment. it was an attempt to divide Democrats and that was it.
Then it totally failed! 100% of Democrats stood united in their refusal to vote for it.

So it wouldn't have counted if they had passed it?

Maybe you're right. I've heard the best way to make sure a bill you don't like doesn't get passed is to put it to a vote.

Of course all of what you say makes sense. That is if we're not talking about the United States Senate.

The biggest joke about the Senate's vote on AOC's Green New Deal was this guy. United States Senator Mike Lee. If I lived in Utah, I'd be doubly embarrassed. Then I'd not only have an idiot for a President, but a moron for a Senator. I especially like what AOC tweeted about him.

For your viewing pleasure. Stephen Colbert and Senator Mike Lee.
