I followed the links and read the bill. I had no idea it was meant as satire.

So, wait. Was the bill in Iowa some time back that said that proposed that unmarried women needed their patents’ permission to get an abortion merely a poorly-worded piece of legislation, the product of a bat-guano crazy Republican, or the edgiest of satire?
 
So I met some hard-core Trump supporters this afternoon.

They explained that they hate Obama and love Trump. I figured I would meet them half-way and I asserted that it was possible to to hate Obama and hate Trump. They told me it was excepti9nally impossible to hold both those those positions. When I said I have been meeting more and more Republicans who have no respect for Trump, they told me that I have it backwards: as more and more time passes, more and more conservatives come over to Trump’s side.

I offered John McCain as an example of someone who disagreed with both Obama and Trump. And that’s when I was told that John McCain was a traitor who gave up names and classified information to his Vietnamese captors. When I pointed out he turned down opportunities to jump the line and leave early, they explained he turned down that opportunity because he wasn’t finished turning over all the information that he had. And then they explained that he started the USS Forestall deck fire.

When I pointed out that Trump sided with Putin against his intelligence agencies, I was told that the agencies could not be trusted. The phrase “deep state” came up around then.

The situation was such that i would have caused someone else a problem if I argued the point, so let it all slide.

Of course you didn't. You don't actually understand your opponents. And sources like Daily Kos are either incapable of or uninterested in enlightening their audiences either.

While it's actually not much of a stretch, given the rhetoric of the most extreme of the pro-gun crowd, it still had effectively no chance of being passed, and even less chance of getting past the courts, and the maker of the bill pretty much couldn't not know that. Many such bills are proposed simply as ways to attempt to shape the conversation and get their names out there. In cases like this, I would dare to say that it's also something like a neon sign to the pro-gun voters and lobby to support him, aka red meat to the base.

Mmm. To speak about Daily Kos a bit... by nature, it's a bunch of bloggers of distinctly variable quality. The most useful part about the site is that it serves as something of a roundup of news from numerous sources and frequently gives a bit of a summation of some interesting articles from sources that limit the amount of free articles that one can read. So it's not really accurate to say that Daily Kos is either incapable or uninterested in enlightening their audiences when it's a particular blogger that failed to do so.

Doesn't sound implausible to me. Not in the least. Whether the folks he met are representative of the base is unclear, but he didn't say that they were.

At this point I would have explained that the criteria was to name someone who hated both because they said it was impossible. I would concede all their points about McCain could be true, because it doesn't matter. None of that alters he disagreed with both, contradicting their impossible stance.
 
Listening to the eponymous 1987 first album by the band "The Christians" (for the surname of some band members, nothing religious). One of the lines in the track "Hooverville" goes "The still born brain child of a man with no brain / The ballot box baby that died". For some reason the 45th President of the United States and his 'policies' came to mind as I listened.

If I had free rein, I would have focused on the intelligence agencies and pointed out that it is possible that the agencies were biased and at the same time were correct about the influence.

Or pointed out that there is not a scintilla of evidence to support President Trump’s claim that he won the popular vote once all the illegal votes are discounted. Not a single Republican governor, sectetary of state, or attourney general has found evidence showing thousands of illegal votes much less millions of illegal votes.

...and yet supporters say that he's all about defending free speech.

The best defence of him when he says this kind of thing is "he doesn't actually mean what he says". Why that's supposed to be a positive trait for the POTUS, I have no idea.
