horrifying attack on Jussie Smollett

Well, funny, but true.

Remind me, how many white people got charged for calling police on black people just minding their own business? BBQ Becky, PP Patty, etc?

There is a difference between being petty and making a false claim to the police. BBQ Becky and PP Patty were both honest in their entirely frivolous complaints to the police. Being scorned for wasting police time with petty offenses is probably the appropriate response, or maybe writing them a ticket. Smollett is accused of making a false report and conspiring to falsify evidence to support such a claim. This is a much greater abuse of the police system. There is an important distinction.

I think there is a very important point to be made about the police being used as a tool for harassing black folks, but Smollett is not the hill to die on. Smollett is accused of a crime much more serious than whining that your neighbor doesn't have a grill permit.

Not to derail the thread, but it's pretty obvious to anyone looking at the George Zimmerman case to see that he got away with manslaughter.

Please don't derail the thread. I want Mumbles on point at the topic at hand. Hands down my favorite posts on ISF ever

think this all might be staged as pre-hype for a coming black superman series called 'Smollettville'?

Smollett was in court today. He and his attorneys want cameras in the courtroom for the proceedings and trial.

Associated Press said:
A lawyer for Jussie Smollett said Tuesday that she would welcome cameras in the courtroom during the “Empire” actor’s trial on charges accusing him of lying to the police, saying there has been a lot of leaked misinformation and cameras would allow the public to “see the evidence and the lack thereof.”

Attorney Tina Glandian made the comments during a brief hearing Tuesday in Cook County criminal court during which both sides agreed that cameras would be allowed at the next hearing in the case, which is scheduled for Thursday. During that hearing, the case will be assigned to a trial judge who will then likely ask Smollett to enter a plea.

During the hearing, which was held after local news organizations requested that cameras be allowed in the courtroom, Judge LeRoy Martin, Jr. said that the new judge will decide whether or not to allow cameras in the courtroom during subsequent hearings and the trial.

After the hearing, Glandian told reporters that evidence has been presented against Smollett that is “demonstrably false.”

“We welcome cameras in the courtroom so that the public and the media can see the actual evidence and what we believe is the lack of evidence against Mr. Smollett and we look forward to complete transparency and the truth coming out,” she said...

Assuming this was all a hoax (and we are relying heavily on basically rumor to assume this), it would be relatively simple for all concerned to come out smelling like roses. If Smollett and the brothers stick to their stories, and no silver bullets are presented by prosecution, a jury might find themselves in a he said-they said scenario and find no one proved of guilt. Doubly so if CPD was sloppy or malicious in their prosecution. Jussie and company could all walk, and even look like they beat or worked the system. Smollett welcoming cameras sounds like he is preparing for showtime. Wagging the dog FTW.

That's a big if though. If one or both brothers cooperate with the investigation, say for immunity for their part, it's all over for Smollett. Realistically, why would they roll the dice on acquittal if immunity is a sure thing. This is all speculation, I don't know if such an offer is being made.

Agreed, speculation. The brothers' careers would be over if they take an immunity deal. Would you hire them? But if they and Smollett stick together, they still have a future, with more notoriety than before. Simple no-snitch loyalty, and everyone wins, assuming there is no smoking gun laying around that CPD has a lid on. Smollett welcoming cameras sounds like he is trying his hand at directing again.

I don't see taking a deal as a career killer at all. About the only thing they might not find future work as is hired goons for a fake hate crime, for the obvious trust issues of course, but as actors I see no problem for them. And now they've got some name recognition that they lacked before.

1/ They've already given statements to the CPD, if they go on the stand and lie about their participation, then they will be charged with perjury, and look very bad in front of the judge.

2/ don't be surprised if the CPD has more video that we just haven't seen yet.

3/ Example: Nigerian Brother A, we have this reciept of you buying the ski masks, rope, and bleach, and here is video of you purchasing said products.

4/ Example: Nigerian Brother B, you ordered this Uber with your account? It dropped you off 3 blocks from the alleged attack, Here is the in car camera of you in the Uber with Brother A. Brother A recieved a phone call from Smollett at this time, do you remember this? Here you are on a camera walking toward the assault location, is that you?

Smollett is toast.

I wonder if the Federal Charges have to wait until Smollett is convicted.

Using the mail in the commission of a Felony, might have to wait until the Felony conviction.

Would you hire a demonstrable a rat that you know will throw you under the bus? People have stuff to hide in all walks of life. You need to be confident that you can trust people. These guys will be proving they cannot be trusted if things go south. They are reported to be dealing Molly to Smollett, too. So you have criminals who are painfully stupid and squeal under pressure. No, I don't want them anywhere near me.

The whole ordeal is just...too...stupid...for me to believe there is not more at play. Smollett welcoming cameras tells me he has a script written, and has reason to believe it will fly. Even the buffonery of how things were bought and paid for is just so ridiculous that I pray for the sake of Humanity Itself that these guys are playing chess while the rest of us are seeing checkers.

So far his reasoning doesn't appear his strong suit.

All three are slobberingly stupid if the facts are as reported. That's kind of what bugs me. If they are just a teeny tiny bit slick, there might be a different game being played than we are assuming, which may be playing out exactly on script, and purely for hype.

Put yourself in the position of a schoolyard level rulebreaker/petty criminal. They know to pay in cash. They would know to find their props, or at least not buy them new on camera (pick them up out of town, if necessary). And going to the crime via Uber, which has a phone app and records? It's a little too much for me to swallow unconditionally

I believe that it would be Geragos who is directing Smollett and telling him that he will win this and that the cameras should be rolling. Don't forget that the showman/actor on camera in the courtroom is going to be Mark Geragos, not Jussie Smollett. Oh, we would see Smollett's face from time to time, but 90% of the action will be Geragos.

It could be interesting to watch him examine the brothers.

"You were arrested at the airport because you had assaulted Jussie Smollett. Isn't that correct?"

'Team Smollett', I should have said.

Pretty confident they all worked together at the beginning, and continue to do so. Just a question of whether they are still on script or off to contingency plan #'s 1 or 2.
