The Trump Presidency 13: The (James) Baker's Dozen

The "Tim Apple" thing seems to me to hark back to the "Lock her up" and "build the wall" memes.

It looks to be a memory method that his handlers use to try to keep his scatterbrained and increasingly frequently wandering concentration on focus and message. Just one or two really important words together to remember because that's all he is capable of holding in his fore-brain. So they told him "HILLARY" and "LOCK HER UP". And "MEXICANS" and "BUILD THE WALL". And the same for his WH guests: "MARYLIN" runs "LOCKHEED". And "TIM" runs "APPLE". Then he just riffs...badly...from that core message, probably to his handlers' horror and frustration.

So, Trump has a proposed budget. Pretty much what you'd expect... more money for the military, cuts to domestic programs. Some highlights:

- Cuts to medicare and medicaid. (Supposedly the cuts to medicare will be from targeting "waste" and lowering drug prices.)

- Cuts to social security (including disability insurance)

- Cuts to the 'food stamp' program, subsidies for student loans, and temporary assistance for needy families, and the low income energy assistance program

- Increase to defense spending

- Funding for a border wall

The budget also figures growth will be in the 2.8-3% range, whereas most experts expect growth to be 2% or less.

I guess the big question is... how much will Trump's base actually be affected by the cuts. After all, the republican voting base skews to the older and uneducated.... cuts to Medicare won't go over well for them. (Although if he actually did get his budget passed, the impact of the cuts wouldn't be felt until after the 2020 election.)

Clearly Trump really needs the wall to keep people from leaving the hellhole he is creating.

trump thinks that you have a finite amount of energy to last your lifetime.
Maybe he thinks the same for words.

Thanks I can cross another one off my list:

The recent Quinnipiac poll found 58% of those polled agreed with the statement that Trump-
Does not care about the average American.

Check! ;)

Interesting looking at Trump's approval ratings on 538.

Generally (and unsurprisingly) the approval rating has mirrored the disapproval rating (one goes up, the other goes down).

The last few days it's changed Since Feb-22nd his disapproval has gone from 53% to 53.4% but his approval rating has gone from 42.7% to 41.8%.

I wonder if his constant "winning" is now starting to erode his supporter's confidence in him. One can only hope...

Thank to Trump's fantastic tax cuts that were going to help the middle class, I'm getting $1,000 less in my tax refund this year. So much Winning! I bet he's paying less but, of course, we'll never get to see it because of his audits.

This had been discussed elsewhere in this forum...

Not sure if this applies to you, but many people who have seen their tax refunds reduced are still paying less tax; its just that the amount of tax deducted from each paycheck wasn't adjusted properly.

Still, I am not upset about people making that mistake... After all, it makes up for the people who mistakenly believe they're saving money under Trump when they are actually worse off thanks to things like increased costs due to Tariffs and reduction of Obamacare benefits.

Just curious...

...is that because over the course of the year, about $1,000 less was deducted from your paycheck? If so, it’s at best a push.

Or were there other changes to deductions or whatever that actually had you paying more in taxes altogether?

Edited to add: I see Segnosaur brought up much the same point.

No, my husband who has always done our taxes, says the deductions were about the same. We just plain got a smaller refund.

Larry Kudlow was on the news tonight discussing the deficit. He claimed 80% of the tax cuts have already been paid for.

These people are sick.

Individual tax revenues grew 7.9%, they'll cling to that like a Rasmussen poll.

Corporate tax revenues fell by 28.3%.

Total revenue was up a robust....1%

Now take inflation into account: -1.3%

Now adjust for GDP growth (did receipts capture the same share of national wealth): -3.8%

Now, how badly did we miss the CBO expected forecasts which take all of these things into account: -5.5%

So they've cherry picked what to hang their hat on quite nicely.
