The Trump Presidency 13: The (James) Baker's Dozen

Not open for further replies.
Cohen just predicted a Nightmare Scenario for 2020:Trump loses the election but refuses to leave office.
If the theory that he didn't actually want to win the election and that the whole thing was a PR stunt (get world wide media attention for a couple of years, and get other people to pay for it), PLUS all the **** with the various investigations going on about him, I think he would be mad to run again. Oh wait ....

If Trump loses the 2020 election, he is no longer the President as of noon, January 20, 2021. The Secret Service no longer protect him, the Marines in the White House must regard him as an intruder. They remove him; by force if necessary.
plus the new Pres, even if he were Republican presumably would have something to say about it.

The idea that either of the parties would even field someone like Trump as a candidate would have been unthinkable.

It was unthinkable even to Trump, who - as corroborated by Cohen yesterday - didn't even expect to be nominated, let alone win the presidency.

But that's the problem with unthinkable candidates. When the media is constantly harping with increasing confidence that Trump has a zero percent chance of winning, a large number of voters won't feel any urgency to go to the poll on Election Day to make sure that self-fulfilling prophecy is indeed fulfilled.

The Brexit referendum went the way it did for the same reason, which is why that country is about to leave the EU even though the majority of its residents don't want that to happen, just like the majority of US residents did not want a President Trump.

Yeah but I just watched Trump taking questions about Otto Warmbier and absolving Kim of responsibility after taking the brutal dictator at his word.

Just another day I guess. Apolgists will apologise.

Just remember, Hillary would have been worse, and Obama was terrible.

So his great deal with Kim falls apart.
Not a good week for Donnie, is it?

Hey, the week's not over! Give him twenty-four hours. I want to see if he gets (yet another) "Trump Just Had Worst Week Ever" rush of coverage. This would be, what, the eleventy-seventh time that headline has been accurately written.

If only the Senate would move their "no confidence" vote up to Friday.

ETA: I see you had second thoughts and ninja'd my post. Rare, that.

America: “Hold my beer.”

Otto Warmbier did make it home, although with severe brain injuries of indeterminable causes. A young American arrested for taking a poster under an autocratic system headed by a man Trump “takes at his word” and has a “fantastic chemistry” with. The president of the United States is pandering to a brutal dictator who is the antithesis of values that America once minimally paid lip service to and sold to the world in its popular culture. The same is true of his relationships with Putin and Duterte.

Self-centred worship of captialism and the autocratic tendencies of the Christian right to impose their faith based ideas has reached an unholy maturity. Politics is the realm of reason and discourse so authoritarianism, lying and confusion must be their tools if they are not to be left sitting powerless on the sidelines. However the the religious right populous are being strung along by a cynical kleptocracy.

Lying by commission and omission. And that’s how we get VicePresident Pence: always willing to support the president, to make excuses for him and to accuse the press of being terribly unfair to the genius that is Donald Trump.

And that guy is a sexist twit. He cannot eat a meal alone with a woman. So if Representative Pelosi and Senator Schumer each invited VP Pence to have a private lunch meeting in their offices, he could attend one and not attend the other. DAFUQ. Is this guy so horny that he would jump Pelosi if he were alone with her? There is one of Jesus’s teachings I will always agree with: sanctimonious people are ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊.

You misunderstand his thinking. It's not Pence that can't control himself, that slut would be trying to seduce him.

Trump Tweets

I will be interviewed by @seanhannity at 9:00 P.M. on @FoxNews. Enjoy!

Interesting.

Hannitty suggested to Trump that it was Cohen's own idea to pay Stormy Daniels, and Trump agreed it was his idea.

Firstly, even if this is true, Trump still went along with it which makes him a co-conspirator, and still repaid Cohen after taking office (which means he has knowingly committed a campaign finance felony; an impeachable offence.

Secondly, the House might be interested in a subpoena for Hannitty to testify to what he just said under oath.

Look no further than a couple posts up:

:boggled:

I think this comment is unfair, or perhaps you've misunderstood Timhau.
I've never seen anything to suggest s/he is a 'trumpkin', and the way I understood the comment was as an indictment of trump's last summit with Kim having given concessions (wargames suspension) while receiving nothing in return.

You need to really squint your mind to see this as trump-spin or the words of an apologist.

Not only that. It was Cohen's idea that Trump have sex with Daniels.

Yeah, I was wondering what's going on. I expected Trump to screw things up in a major way again. Apart from a few typically moronic statements, he came out with nothing, which beat my expectations. There's my Trump-spin.

A question many of us have been asking since his inauguration day.

And many others since before he even became a candidate.

The hypocrisy of the Christian Right in supporting somebody as immoral and unethical by Classical Christian Standards as Trump is truly astounding.

Why would it be astounding? Ahh. That requires one to actually believe their blatantly demostrated hypocrisy. It's topics like this, especially, that logger was great for. "Yeah, we're not going to do anything about it or change our votes over it, but at least we make a ruckus about it!"

Hey, at least he was honest.

The root of the problem, I think, is that the US is over the hump of its global influence and is a declining power refusing to acknowledge the fact, and indeed reacting with fury to the very suggestion. As a Brit boomer (class of '54) I was lucky enough to grow up after that phase. Or so I thought before 2016 and the Brexit fiasco.

Mmm. I'm not so sure. We certainly are losing global influence now, but... I wouldn't call that the root of the problem. The root of the problem lies far more in how the average person has been getting ever more screwed in comparison to the very rich. The Republicans have pointedly been doing that as a party, of course (as well as culturally undermining democracy in its attempts to shore up its power), but quite a few Democrats have been quite culpable, too.

Actually, the GOP was howling when Obama said he was willing to talk to NK.

Yes, they were. There are even a few Hannity comparison clip shows. It's pretty much exemplary of the GOP's overwhelming partisanship.

:eye-poppi

Complete totalitarian leader might not know about an American hostage/prisoner who'd been in a coma for a year?

Seriously?

"At least until much too late." He fairly certainly was informed after the damage was done. How involved he was in Otto's treatment before then is an unknown to us. I'm definitely not going to say that he wasn't involved, just that without actual evidence, even insinuations that he was directly involved would fairly certainly be counterproductive during negotiations.

Anyways, random news time. As a new development in the North Carolina Absentee ballot fraud story... Dowless has been bailed out by the guy who hooked him up with Harris and participated in their initial meeting. There's more indications that he's not a fan of electoral integrity and was fairly certainly a previous client, such as previous payments to Dowless, but he claims to have been delivering the bail on behalf of others. Other clients, perhaps? Nothing to see here! Move along. Move along.

Now for bits of good news! Allen Weisselberg will fairly certainly be appearing before Congress, now, once a date has officially been set. So many questions for him to answer. Felix Sater will appear before Congress on March 14th. Sater hasn't officially flipped, though, so it's doubtful that he'll be as helpful as Cohen.

Moving on to Texan false accusations of voter fraud on a massive scale. Federal Judge Orders Texas To End 'Flawed' Effort To ID Noncitizen Voters. Good. I have no problem with serious, intelligent efforts to find illegal voters made in good faith, but that wasn't even remotely close to serious, intelligent, or in good faith.

And... Netanyahu's been unofficially indicted. It seems that it's been declared that he will be indicted for corruption, as it stands, but I'm not seeing that he has been quite yet. As another person who claims that the "left" is on a "witch hunt" to get him, may the indictments provide a beacon to indictments of our own criminal in chief.

And when Obama negotiated the Iran nuclear agreement, 47 GOP Senators signed on to a letter to the Iranian leadership, warning them that Obama would be out of office soon, and that the next President might overturn any agreement reached.

Ahh, right. I forgot about that bit of outright traitorous behavior. Thanks for the reminder!

In other news, here's yet another reason to say "**** you, McConnell and all you complicit Republicans!"

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, the supposed great "institutionalist," just engineered further destruction of his institution this week. The Senate confirmed conservative Seattle lawyer Eric Miller, best known for his career fighting against the rights of Native Americans, to the country's most liberal appeals court. That's bad. What's destructive is that, for the first time ever, that vote came to the floor over the opposition of both of the nominee's home state senators.

Both Democrats, Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray, refused to provide their "blue slips" for Miller, the procedural go-ahead that Senate tradition has required for judicial nominations to proceed. The two senators didn't just not submit their approval; they both forcefully opposed Miller's nomination and confirmation. That's after Judiciary Chairman Lindsey Graham shoved his nomination through committee with a hearing held during a congressional recess that was attended by just two Republican senators.
