The Trump Presidency 13: The (James) Baker's Dozen

Unbelievable. Trump tweets (regarding Mueller):
There is a lot of explaining to do to the millions of people who had just elected a president who they really like...

Millions of people, yes. But 2.9 million fewer than those who voted for his opponent. A president they really like? He's the most unpopular president in U.S. history. His approval rating has been under 50% and negative -- more disapproval than approval -- since his very first week in office, twenty-five long chaotic months ago. Yet somehow Donnie remains oblivious to all this. How does this not get through to him? How does he manage to block it all out?

The best I can come up with is that it's not about proportion, just absolute numbers. If he has 25% of voters supporting him, to him that's *millions* of fans giving him good ratings. It doesn't register (or get through his efficiently blocking reality filter) that there are 3X more folk who'd just as soon piss on him.

So, you know how Trump says that his presidency has made the US respected again internationally? Well...

Speaking to a security conference in Munich, Pence tells his audience he brings greetings from President Trump... and not a single person claps. #awkward

Ivanka Trump is the only person in audience who doesn’t applaud after Angela Merkel points out the absurdity of Trump claiming German cars are a national security threat

OMG -- Pence was visibly shook in Poland when he received absolutely no reaction to what was clearly supposed to be an applause line about how "the time has come for our European partners to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal."

Videos embedded in tweets.

(Almost) unbelievably, Lawrence O'Donnell reported tonight that the official White House transcript of Pence's speech says the audience applauded Trump's greetings.

You know, I suspect even Pence is now seriously reconsidering who his friends are in Washington. Pence may be a wound-up-tight prig but he is also no fool. If that was the reception he was given carrying Trump' words, hopefully he was bright enough to realise he was given this frigid response because (a) they were absolutely rubbish ideas, an (b) they came from Trump. And that perhaps the reason for his global embarrassment lie not with the EU but with the White House he represents. Time for some re-assessment...

You are giving Mama-boy too much credit: Pence is the kind of guy who believes that WW2 was God's punishment of Europe for believing in Darwinism.
Of course European leaders, as agents of Satan, would try to stand against the Manifest Destiny that God has ordained for the US in general, and Mike Pence in particular.

Oh for sure! Bats in the belfry and all. But he is also far more self-aware than his boss. He will have taken note of this (non-)response.

That explains Pence's pauses. :sdl:

It doesn't explain why Pence believed people would applaud.

It's hard to know what Pence believes with his over-the-top Trump worship.

It was noted on his teleprompter, as prepared by Steve Miller probably.

He's the bookmark in the White House for where they will find the next president when Donny finally starts flinging his own poo on national TV. He doesn't want to jeopardise that position in the meanwhile.

we know that he believes that God wants him to be President.
Mitch and the others have told him that too. about three or four years ago when they let Trump be the shock-troop.

How many of them led to the President being sued, in the 9th Circuit, it shouldn't have been the 9th Circuit, the President knew the law better than anybody ever, shouldn't have been the 9th Circuit, got a bad result, very wrong, the President knew the law better than anybody ever, got sued again, more bad results, conspiracy, coup, Fake News, and is still going through the courts and Congress?

Exactly none. You seem to have this national emergency declaration confused with other executive actions.

I'm pretty sure that what Lawrence showed was the prepared script, with the *anticipated* applause points and thus where to pause for them. Not some massaged after action report. But that latter document might yet be written, knowing that crowd of addled fantasists... :boggled:

Its just another obvious public symptom of his narcissism. He just can't believe people don't love him and think he's the greatest

Sadly she has now retired, but she is still wheeled out for encore performances every so often.
