Cont: The Trump Presidency 11: Insert something funny

My guess is the “Trump Gallop” will eventually be defeated by some sort of Constitutional Crisis. If he ignores a subpoena or other court order, and then has Federal Marshals ready to execute said court order. Think Nixon and the court order for his tapes.

I think this is a likely outcome due to the fact that I think Trump has a very limited knowledge of how the separation of powers works, and has an inflated sense of his own power and what he can get away with.

But, *Throws my arms in the air* Lordy I’ve been wrong again and again, so I guess we just have to wait things out. In Trump’s go-to noncommittal phrase, “We’ll see what happens”.

Yes, this. I argue with certain types of cranks both here, and in my real job. But the big difference is, in my real job, I've got the power of law behind me, and if they try to pull some goalpost-moving ******** on me, I can shut them down.

This is the same. There really are people out there with the power to compel real responses from Trump, or else to toss him out of office, or into jail.

The problem is getting those people to do their jobs.

I've seen this before. Trump's ******** only works for so long. He's usually among the biggest losers when his house of cards inevitably collapse.
With no endgame in mind, Mr. Trump appears to be boxed in between Democrats who will control the House and have key votes in the Senate and his supporters on the hard right, who have grown more vocal in criticizing him. After administration officials signaled this month that the president was willing to back off his demands for wall funding, the conservative personalities Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh accused the president of being “gutless” and surrendering to Democrats. To avoid an immediate hit from his base, Mr. Trump appeared to embrace a short-term strategy, celebrating a premature victory when the House passed a short-term funding bill last week that included the money he wanted for more border security. Link

One factor surrounding the current budget fight and government shutdown is the tepid support Trump is getting from his own party. Even Mitch McConnell's support for the president has been lukewarm. McConnell has said only that "it was up to Democrats and Mr. Trump to reach a deal."

Meantime, despite Trump's constant claims he's doing a fantastic job as president his approval ratings remain mostly under 40% while his disapproval ratings remain stubbornly over 50%. His disapproval ratings have hit 60% several times as well. In fact the only time the Gallup poll has shown Trump's disapproval rating below 50% was in his first week in office. But even then his disapproval rating was higher than his approval rating. Link

He obviously is one of the least respected presidents we've ever had yet Trump -- and a lot of his supporters -- remain blind to that. On another forum I belong to, a blowhard was recently blathering he was "willing to go to war," to keep Trump in office. Someone asked him, "You mean, despite the wishes of a majority of the American people?" He responded the polls were manipulated by the fake liberal media..

We're down the rabbit hole, folks. Deep down it. ;)

I am in the White House waiting for the Democrats to come on over and make a deal on Border Security. From what I hear, they are spending so much time on Presidential Harassment that they have little time left for things like stopping crime and our military!

Just had a long and very good call with President Xi of China. Deal is moving along very well. If made, it will be very comprehensive, covering all subjects, areas and points of dispute. Big progress being made!

Corrupt, treasonous, and incompetent Trump toady Mick Mulvaney blamed the shutdown on “Nancy Pelosi’s speakership”. That’s freaking hilarious, as she’s not, you know, Speaker of the House yet.

Like almost all Trump appointees, Mulvaney is just comically bad at anything other than breaking things and grifting. The thought of going up against a competent woman like Pelosi has them just about wetting their pants. Think of the prison cafeteria scene from Watchmen with Pelosi in the role of Rorschach: “I’m not locked in here with you - you’re locked in here with me!

This is a little on the nose.

The impasse is hitting the other end of the agriculture department’s supply chain. Direct payments to farmers covered by payouts intended to blunt the impact of Mr. Trump’s tariff war with China could be delayed until government funding is restored, because the workers processing them have been furloughed.

Any deaths of children or others at the Border are strictly the fault of the Democrats and their pathetic immigration policies that allow people to make the long trek thinking they can enter our country illegally. They can’t. If we had a Wall, they wouldn’t even try! The two.....

...children in question were very sick before they were given over to Border Patrol. The father of the young girl said it was not their fault, he hadn’t given her water in days. Border Patrol needs the Wall and it will all end. They are working so hard & getting so little credit!

Just for the record: the Republicans have been in control of all three branches of government for 2 years.

What makes Trump think the Democrats are in DC? Why would they be? I'm pretty sure both the House and the Senate have adjourned.

Fundamental problem for Trump is that he has zero leverage to get Pelosi to negotiate. They can sit on their hands while Trump rants and wait for the new Congress to be seated, at which point Trump will have to find someone who actually understands 'the art of the deal' to negotiate a deal with the Dems.

The important thing to understand with Mexico/USA trade is that their top three exports are NOT strawberries, tacos and hand-stitched shawls. Their top three exports, totalling 80 billion combined, are Autos/Parts, Electronics, Machinery.
That's EXACTLY what I was thinking about. Trump is talking seriously (well, as seriously as Trump ever talks) about disrupting if not stopping $80bn of trade to get $5bn of wall money. That is not only a "bad deal" it is a major toddler-sized hissy-fit pout.

But these companies are not that stupid because they already ignore all this "America First" bull-****. They can simply shift their importing line to Canada, which is still "open trading" with the USA. Mexican imports would then go via Canada. How much value will shift? Oh, probably $80bn worth. Really, just the money would go to Mexico via Canada, completely bypassing any US/Mexico trade barriers Trump puts in place. And if Trump is going to stick out his bottom lip any further, the goods will go the same route too which will add some cost, which the US consumer gets to pay. Not Mexico, not Canada, America. That's some winning...

Lack of object permanency: it's were he saw them last, so they must still be there.

So convincing to his base then?

Oh sorry, I mustn't call them morons or bigots because that might stop them voting for someone who isn't a racist moron.

For those that naively ask why didn’t the Republicans get approval to build the Wall over the last year, it is because IN THE SENATE WE NEED 10 DEMOCRAT VOTES, and they will gives us “NONE” for Border Security! Now we have to do it the hard way, with a Shutdown. Too bad! @FoxNews

Well, that's a lie. He can get money for border security. What he won't get is $5B for a freaking wall. Border security and the wall are not synonyms.

I'm not sure that is true. Pelosi and the Dems need to show a willingness to negotiate at least. I think for the most part they have handled it right. So far. But it will be a pox on both houses if this goes on too long.

From Joe Morgue, re focusing on one thing Trump does and not getting distracted:
