Cont: The Trump Presidency 11: Insert something funny

Missed SNL last night, but I saw the skit that pissed off Donnie on You Tube.
I did not think it was all that funny,.It was another "It's A Wonderful Life" parody, the idea being Alec Bladwin as Trump being shown how much better the world would be if he had not been elected President..a couple of laughs, but overall not one of SNL's better efforts.
But it just shows how much of a snowflake Trump really is.
Compare it to Bush Sr reaction to being poked fun at by SNL< were he went on the show and did a pretty funny imitation of Dana Carvey imitating him.

I agree. The whole show wasn't very good this week.

Back when George H.W.Bush was running for Texas governor against Ann Richards, she made fun of his sometimes mangled syntax, saying, “Poor George can’t help it. He was born with a silver foot in his mouth.” Bush was tickled and sent her a necklace with a little silver foot on it.

Either one of them was a thousand times better than Perry, Paxton, Patrick, and Abbott combined.

There is something called the Lemon Test:
Have a secular purpose;
Must neither advance nor inhibit religion; and
Must not result in an excessive entanglement between government and religion.

While I understand that religions use meditation, meditation in of itself is not inherently religious.

This has a secular purpose.

If Buddhism is not mentioned by teachers, I can't see how meditation advances the religion of Buddhism which is a religion that is hardly a religion.

I can't see the entanglement between the government and religion.

Agreed. Meditation is not in and of itself religiously based although many religions, including Christianity, embrace it.

Christian meditation is rooted in the Bible. In fact, the Bible commands us to meditate. In Joshua 1:8, God says to meditate on His word day and night so we will obey it. The psalmist says "his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night" (Psalm 1:2). Actually, the Bible mentions meditate or meditation 20 times.

There are, however, extremist Christians who fear meditation (what don't they fear?):

We live in a very stressed-out culture that is constantly looking for ways to unwind and destress. Just about any doctor or health expert will tell you to do one thing: meditate.

By meditate they mean an Eastern form of meditation: Zen meditation, transcendental meditation, yoga, Chinese or Hindu meditation, guided meditation, all of which have their origins in new age and Eastern religions.

The meditation God was talking about in Joshua 1:8 differs greatly from Eastern meditation. In fact, I'll go so far as to say that participating in any form of meditation, apart from biblical meditation, is opening the door wide to the enemy.

IMO, fear is the key component in extremist religion.

I agree on both points. Last night's SNL was a disappointment and Trump has earned his nickname of Trumplethinskin. He has the most fragile ego of anyone I've ever run across.

This is the point. The type of meditation taught in schools and on my high school football team is necessarily secular. It's about learning to concentrate.

That is their real objection. Its NOT ABOUT GOD and their argument is that it should be and it should be about their god. So much of religion and Christianity is one cannot be neutral. Neutral in their book is impossible. You're either with them or against them.

They're afraid if people learn emotional and mental coping skills, there is no need for their sky-daddy. And their fear is probably justified. But that doesn't make meditation religious.

I honestly had to check the link to see if this was The Onion. Yeah, screw that sitting around thinking about goodness and peace, a Real Christian(tm) should be learning to act like Trump!

...If only it were the Onion. The "Religious Right" is, sadly, full of insanity and anti-Christian ideology cloaked as Christian values. That might have something to do with a bunch of pastors literally substituting Republican talking points for Christian values since, what, at least the 80s, though?

Trump tweets

Required television watching is last weeks @marthamaccallum interview with the wonderful wife of Rod Blagojevich and the @trish_regan interview with a Jerome Corsi. If that doesn’t tell you something about what has been going on in our Country, nothing will. Very sad!

I like this idea. She has always come across differently than the other Trump apologists. She comes across to me as savy and defending Trump while playing a PR/lawerly game. I got that feeling early while hearing her famous “alt facts” line.

I always blamed the 'Uncanny Valley' for that.

Again, this is not Trumpy thumbs speaking. It is far too neat and composed, even restrained. I suspect someone has taken his tweety phone off him...at last.

Yes, but I bet this case goes nowhere. I find it amusing that a group promoting prayer in public schools is saying that secular mindful meditation is unconstitutional. It is secular. It doesn't include ANYTHING religious. And even if they accomplish preventing this from being taught in schools, (which I doubt) they are no closer to overturning a 56 year old precedent in Engel v. Vitale in getting school prayer back in the classroom.

In fact, if anything, the decision they seek banning meditation because they are saying that it is religious only pushes their goal further away. They are in fact arguing against a different kind of school prayer. You got to find that ironic and self defeating.

Prayer in schools is a rallying cry, it becomes meaningless if the goal is obtained.

I for one am looking forward to the incredible awkwardness at chow time in Otisburg. By the time The PDJT gets there, Cohen is going to be a cell boss with tats and mutton chops, and demand his cookie every day at lunch.

Cohen is going to be puppy chow, but his husband on the other hand....

Did you mean meaningful? Otherwise I don't follow. The problem of course is that these people argue this is a Christian nation when in fact while most of the people may identify as Christian, the nation or government itself is secular

I think her idea is that they want to be able to complain that they are being denied prayer in schools. And so if they ever got it they'd lose a favorite complaining point.

Got it now. And that really is the truth. There is a scene in The West Wing whereJosh pushes for money from Republicans for tobacco education. The Republicans were reluctant and Josh embarrasses them with a press release and they cave and give him the money.

And Bruno Gianelli a political strategist schools him that he shouldn't want the money but the issue.

These people make money on the issue. They don't want the issue to disappear because you can't get donations for a non-issue.
