Cont: The Trump Presidency 11: Insert something funny

Is it just me. But do others find it harder and harder to laugh at Trump? This Kashoggi incident is not funny and Trump's reaction is overwhelmingly disgusting. I'm curious about what Trump's supporters think about this. Do they still support him now?

I've not seen a single one of them comment on it at all. I think they think that it's just as disgusting as the rest of us and can't find a way to spin it into a positive, into something that doesn't matter, into "fake news", into a "Dimms are stoopid" comment, or into a tu quoque, so they're just pretending that it doesn't exist.

Not fair. I hear Trump's bone spurs were acting up.

Well, it IS mean & nasty out there. What if someone were to dismember him, and nobody do anything about it? It would be " maybe they did, and maybe they didn't". And think of all the great things he does that he gives thanks for. If he's gone, he isn't doing all those great things, and Thanksgiving will lose it's meaning.

The ones that I spar with on a different forum (unmoderated) basically shrug it off as Saudi Arabia is important and all they did was kill one of their own, so why should I care? Bear in mind that place is deep in enemy territory. They all believe things like global warming is a leftist conspiracy and everything left of center is dirty Communism. Fascinating bunch, but perhaps not representative of the average Trump supporter. But then again, maybe it is. I can't really tell anymore.

Why exactly is Trump (a man who has never served in any military capacity, much less in the navy, and who has never flown a plane, or worked as an engineer, or done anything relevant to the issue) making any sort of comment about it at all?

Because he and his friends don't make a lot of money off of Uranium. Oil and coal however...

He will be asking for the navy to return to coal-fired boilers next.

Trump fans on this forum: this is the genius you voted for.

Being as charitable as possible, I assume that Trump once saw a documentary about steam-powered catapults for accelerating the planes off Aircraft carriers.
There are electromagnetic versions in development, but none are operational.

So in this sense, the Navy('s airforce) is still 100% steam powered, which makes Trump's comments nonsensical either way.

Navy nuclear reactors generate steam which drive turbines for propulsion and electricity generation.

ETA: I wouldn't bust his chops too much on this though. In loose conversation, conventional (oil-fired) powered ships are still informally often referred to as steam ships. There are no conventional steam ships left as combat ships in the Navy, though. All the destroyers, cruisers and LCS are gas turbines.

That's a bit of a stretch. And they never referred to oil fired (diesel) as steam ships although the term under steam or steaming away has lived on beyond the use of actual 'steam' powered ships. I bet there hasn't actually been a Navy steam ship commissioned since before WWII.

Trump Tweets

"This is the coldest weather in the history of the Thanksgiving Day Parade in NYC, and one of the coldest Thanksgivings on record!"

This is probably cribbed from someone's notes from the Parade folks at Macy's. It is 100% accurate. The parade started in 1924. The previously coldest Thanksgiving Day in NYC was 1901.

I bet there has.
Gas Turbines didn't start replacing steam until the 60s.
The first large warships with gas turbines were the RN Type 81 'Tribal Class' Frigates.
They had steam turbines with auxiliary gas turbine boost.
They were designed in the 50s and served through the 60s and 70s in to the early 80s.
Steam powered ships were built by the USN up to the 70s.

I crewed two different Tribals. Ashanti and Eskimo.

It's Trump so it's okay to mock him over it. It's unfair and possibly a mischaracterization of what he said but that's no reason not to mock him for it.

I also notice "sail" is in the vernacular - do warships still set sail these days?
