Cont: The Trump Presidency X: 10-10 'til we do it again

Can't remember seeing this here:

Trump is 'planning' another round of tax cuts (these ones aimed at the middle class) for sometime before November (despite the fact that Republican party leaders don't seem to know anything about it.)

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...x-cut-plan-may-come-days-before-november-vote

A couple of notes:
- This certainly smells of desperation... they realized the original tax cuts were not popular and Trump wants to keep republicans from losing seats in the mid-terms.

- Of course no word on how exactly that will impact the deficit, which has skyrocketed. (Despite republican claims that the last round of tax cuts would "pay for themselves")

Faced with the rising deficit, Trump this week told his Cabinet that each federal agency needed to trim its budget by 5 percent.
In typical Trump fashion he has a “plan”. I guess he doesn’t realize that 5% of $500 billion is $25 Billion which isn’t even pay for the Increase in defence spending he’s undoubtedly going to ask for.

Besides, plenty of folks just plain don't like Ted Cruz. For good reasons as I understand it.

"Beto O'Rourke broke a three-month Senate fundraising record with a staggering $38 million haul.

"Still, he trails Cruz in every recent statewide poll of red Texas."

-- CNBC (Oct 22, 2018)

The Dimms flush $38 million down the toilet. Bwahahaha!

No contest, an easy victory for Cruz.

You say that as if no one should ever spend money on campaigns unless they are certain to win.

"Still, he trails Cruz in every recent statewide poll of red Texas."

I thought polls were no longer to be trusted?

Re: this recent Trump tweet:

“Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador were not able to do the job of stopping people from leaving their country and coming illegally to the U.S. We will now begin cutting off, or substantially reducing, the massive foreign aid routinely given to them.”

The whole concept of a country keeping people from leaving is disturbing.

Brings to my mind images of East Berlin and “The Handmaid’s Tale”.

That is what republicans love about how great the Berlin Wall was. As Reagan said "Mr Gorbachev build up this wall!"

John Boehner called Cruz "Lucifer in the flesh".
He should know.

One of the joys of being out of politics is that you can say what you think about certain members of your own party, and Boehner is taking full advantage of that .
I think few Politicians were are glad to get out as he was, when he entered the press conference in which he officaly announced his retirement (which has been leaked ..probably delibertly the day before) he was whistling "Zipa Dee Do Dah". I thin that really expressed what he felt.

"Sadly, it looks like Mexico’s Police and Military are unable to stop the Caravan heading to the Southern Border of the United States. Criminals and unknown Middle Easterners are mixed in. I have alerted Border Patrol and Military that this is a National Emergy. Must change laws!"

"Every time you see a Caravan, or people illegally coming, or attempting to come, into our Country illegally, think of and blame the Democrats for not giving us the votes to change our pathetic Immigration Laws! Remember the Midterms! So unfair to those who come in legally."

“Shock report: US paying more for illegal immigrant births than Trump’s wall”

"The Fake News Media has been talking about recent approval ratings of me by countries around the world, including the European Union, as being very low...."

"...I say of course they’re low - because for the first time in 50 years I am making them pay a big price for doing business with America. Why should they like me? — But I still like them!"

Middle Easterners? People from Belize? :p

Yes. I have never seen the country so polarized. The last time the country was this divided was the Civil War but Trump has managed it. He revels in the divisiveness and feeds on it. I think he sees it as a measure of his power. If Trump truly cared for this country, he'd be working to bring us together but everything he does works to widening the chasm.

Wasn't it far worse during the Vietnam war?

That photo... Is that fully a dozen people, or just close?

Anyway, that's getting close to 100,000, right? Much closer than four people.

I counted 10. It is such a poor photo that it must have been taken by the guy who photographs aliens and Sasquatch's. Take a really bad pic and you can claim it shows anything you want it this.

I don't believe this is true. Forget the 60s? Forget the massive rallies and sit ins? Remember the division between the pro war hawks and the anti-war demonstrators? The Democratic National Convention in Chicago in 1968? Remember the massive demonstrations? I remember I-5 in Seattle being shut down by Protesters many times in the 60s/70s. What is called Red Square on the University Campus use to be this huge inviting green area but because of protesters they covered it in brick that discouraged the sit-ins. Remember Kent State? How about the battle for Civil Rights? Or before our time, the labor riots?

No, I haven't forgotten them. I'd say they're on a par with the demonstrations that happened just after Trump's election.
The main difference between then an now is that none of the presidents during those time reveled in the divisiveness and promoted it. None egged one side one against the other at rallies like Trump does. No, he is unique among US presidents...and not in a good way.

Earlier this year House Republicans wrestled themselves to a standstill on immigration reform because they could reach no agreement amongst themselves. Despite Trump's calls to "Reform immigration now!", at the time he said wait until after the midterms to pass a better law. But I cannot for the life of me see how Democrats are obstructing anything in the House. In the Senate, maybe they have a little more power, but the mechanics of blaming Democrats while the GOP holds a majority of both chambers largely eludes me.

Big agriculture interests do not want to have to use E-Verify.

It's incredible how weak and sensitive these manly men can be.
Careful what you wish for.

The nuclear option (disallowing a refusal to vote in the Senate) hasn't been applied to legislation yet, but it could be. McConnell hasn't thought it a good move yet, but he could change his mind.

It's a two bladed sword, not as attractive as the judicial nomination nuclear option, which buys long term advantage even if the tide turns.

About the same, as I remember. There were huge demonstrations just like we saw just after the election. The main difference is that the divisiveness wasn't coming directly from the president like it is today. The president wasn't holding rallies in which he promoted the kind of hostility we see Trump doing.

ETA: Minoosh is correct; by the end, Americans were pretty well united that the war had been a disaster and it was time to get out. It was mostly the government vs the majority will of the people the last few years. The will of the American people finally won out. Today's divisiveness is much different.

Trump is calling the bugaboo of a caravan a “National Emergency”. Something he has craved to increase his approval rating.
