New SCOTUS Judge II: The Wrath of Kavanaugh

I always laugh at people from either party who suggest that the obliteration of the opposition would be a good thing. And it might be. For about 5 minutes. Then the realities of one party rule starts taking effect. Because power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. You start shutting down dissent and abusing the power you have. Checks against corruption and oppressive rules disappear.

And it doesn't seem to matter what the initial ideology was, the result is alway despotism.

Yeah, but it's pwning the Dimms, so it's a good thing.

Everything I've seen says the LDS is still growing (albeit more slowly than it has). NRA's numbers are a little harder to pin down, but they usually get an increase every time there's a major mass shooting. Republican party affiliation is decreasing though. And I think you're right that Trump is playing a role in that.

The LDS is growing...worldwide. But it is shrinking in the United States. Now there is proof of the gullibility of man. Religion started 150 years ago by a convicted con-man.

I doubt you can ever trust the NRAs numbers. I use to get mailings for a long time referencing I was a member because I took a firearm safety course. I have never paid a due or supported their political aims.

The United States has a multitude of political parties (Libertarian, Green, Constitution, et al).

The "obliteration" of the most corrupt party of the bunch (Democratic), will be a healthy and welcome event.

No, that isn't what will happen. But if you truly believed it was, you should oppose all forms of gun control. At least have some consistency in your delusion.

Something I've discovered over the past year is that I'm not a bad shot with an SKS. I have to thank that one odd friend of mine, who I spent years deriding for doomsday prepping, for having his arsenal to let me train with.

So tribal. The other side is most corrupt. Which is really ridiculous when you consider that the GOP constantly throughout the last 8 years holding power in both houses and now the executive branch have found very little. But whatever, I'd hate for the facts to get in your way.

But your desire to replace the opposition party with some power for dozens of parties with none is telling. Still in effect, one party rule. You're suggesting the US become the Mexico of the last 50 years. .

That can be achieved - with a different voting system.
Thanks for your support!

Checks in... shockingly enough, the thread has degenerated furtherfrom last night’s posts advocating attacking Kavanaugh’s daughters.

Oh well, can’t say I surprised.

Ah, remember the good old days when Kavanaugh sneered and turned his back on the father of a girl slain in the Parkland massacre? We were all so innocent then.

Lol, remember when the pathetic Dems used a grieving father as a set up where they had him try and do that and Kavanaugh had no idea who that guy was? Yeah good times indeed

In the UK a Supreme Court judge takes an oath to decide according to the evidence, without fear or favour, not according to what Trump wants you to decide. It's a political bench.

Are TV interviews now sworn testimony?

Obviously TV interviews are TV interviews, not sworn testimony. However, a television interview can certainly be used to refute a sworn statement made. (which is what was done here)

Do you dispute this?

*shakes head*

It saddens me that you just don't get it. You don't see the danger we are in.

Uproars, which I'm skeptical would happen, would not be enough. We already have concentration camps for asylum seekers and people that just looked too Hispanic to an ICE agent. Lots of people are pissed about it and yet are powerless to stop them.

Incrementally those camps will be expanded to include more and more of the population. And all the while we will get people saying "don't worry, if we really went Nazi everyone would rise up."

I don't want to get into a debate in this thread about immigration policy specifically, but the whole border crossing situation does offer an illustration of what I mean.

We have certain laws about border crossing, and the last administration deliberately ordered lax enforcement of some of those laws. The current administration ordered strict and aggressive enforcement of those laws. In the course of doing so, they went farther that a lot of people thought was a good idea. The consequence was political pushback, and in some cases federal court orders requiring a change in the way the administration implemented the policies.

It didn't run out of control. There weren't massive roundups of brown people. The "concentration camps" (really? concentration camps?) had to be modified. It wasn't some dictatorial presence that declared martial law and ignored either political opposition or judicial decrees. When the policy got into some territory that people thought was too extreme, there was an uproar, and the policy was scaled back in response tot he uproar. The system worked.

Still too extreme for your tastes? I suggest voting. And maybe even donating time to support candidates you agree with, or educating fellow voters about what's wrong that they might not have paid attention to. If they're complacent, try to shake them out of that complacency. One thing I would avoid, though, is any variation of voter education that includes "YOU'RE ALL A BUNCH OF NAZIS!" People really hate that stuff, and they hate it so much that they voted for Donald Trump as a backlash against it.

Brett Kavanaugh (27 Sep 2018)

Thing is... RBG told the truth about Trump. He IS eminently unqualified to be the president of the USA by several country miles, and has proven how unprepared, capricious and dangerous he is.

By comparison, Kavanaugh, a judge in a US court and in what was essentially the job interview for the SCOTUS, told a whopping pack of lies based on blatant political bias and demonstrated his 100% unsuitability to serve. Not only did most of those watching wonder how the hell he had risen as far as he had, 2000 law professors - his teachers and mentors - were moved to publicly say so as well. And the collective righteous anger of the majority of the US female population is yet to be felt.

But hey. Let's drag out and misconstrue some comments to see if that will justify your happiness. You know it won't, though, don't you. ;)

Clearly he's doing things right, much to the derision of liberals.

As long as the R's have the majority in the Senate and the VP is Republican (in a tight majority), I suspect Manchin will continue to do what he just did.

What I meant was, whether Manchin is Dem or Repub is very important, separate from whether he votes with the Dems or the Repubs on any particular vote.

Conservatives in some states have shut down Planned Parenthood clinics or made it hard for them to function. They don't all want to see contraception easy to obtain. They want anyone not married to suffer consequences for having sex. They want abstinence only. Gawd knows why.

Most of the conservatives I know do not support free birth control, or free abortions (or government assisted) Pay for them yourself. If you're responsible enough to be having sex, you should be responsible enough to use your own birth control methods also. Using tax dollars for others abortions, or BC is a no go for me.

Wealthy white guys.

Yet again, you're dealing with raw, naked white supremacism. They hate LGBT people, they hate nonwhite people, they hate immigrants, they want wealth to be drained from all of the above, and to the few, and they don't even care if they themselves are hurt in the process.

Now, stop asking that question, and start thinking of what you can do to get your family and friends to work against that.

Be clear: who is "they"

Also, provide evidence proving it.
