New SCOTUS Judge II: The Wrath of Kavanaugh

Liberals and progressives see America as belonging to all Americans equally. We expect government to serve all Americans equally, and we see government as generally being a force for good in the lives of ordinary Americans going back at least to the late 1800s: pure food and drug laws, anti-monopoly laws, workplace safety laws, legal protection for unions, progressive income tax rates, the New Deal, the GI Bill, Social Security, Medicare, civil rights laws, voting rights laws, pollution restrictions, etc., etc.

Who is your America for?

Wealthy white guys.

Yet again, you're dealing with raw, naked white supremacism. They hate LGBT people, they hate nonwhite people, they hate immigrants, they want wealth to be drained from all of the above, and to the few, and they don't even care if they themselves are hurt in the process.

Now, stop asking that question, and start thinking of what you can do to get your family and friends to work against that.

It's not just "might". He has explicitly stated that the President is immune to any sort of prosecution. It's been suggested that it's why Trump picked him.

So not quite as I said. Of course, he had no problem with investigating and distracting the President when it was Bill Clinton.

Arrested? Probably. Indicted or formally charged? That's where it gets problematic. For starters the president has unlimited powers when it comes to pardoning people for crimes; there is a strong argument he could pardon himself. So the procedure most constitutional scholars support is removal from office via impeachment and conviction in the Senate, and then indictment.

This is not very controversial; I note that Bill Clinton's lawyers made this very argument some 20 years ago.

It's also been mostly shut down by the Courts. See both Clinton v Jones and Nixon v United States both UNANIMOUS decisions against POTUS. Both of whom fighting the power of subpoena.

No president has been indicted mostly because the courts have feared a constitutional crises where their order is ignored. Note that in dozens of Watergate prosecutions, they named an unindicted co-conspirator.

Finally when it comes to the idea of a President pardoning himself, it has been a legal maxim going back 400 years that no man may sit in judgment of himself. Only a small fraction of legal and historical scholars believe that the President has that right.

The argument that the President can pardon himself is weak.

It looks like Collins is already seeing the consequences of voting for Kavanaugh. More than $2 million has been raised to fund her opponent in 2020 since she announced her vote. The website was so busy it crashed for a while.

A website collecting money to fund a rival to Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine crashed on Friday shortly after she announced she would vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

The site was back up later Friday and said it had raised nearly $2.2 million from more than 75,000 pledges.

"Republican appointee" is not the same as rabid right-winger. Earl Warren was a Republican appointee. Sandra Day O'Connor and Anthony Kennedy were Reagan appointees. Kav is in a different league.

She is suggesting that we should advise our employees -- our government officials -- that we are dissatisfied with their performance, just as any responsible manager would. The difference is that they don't have to worry about being fired unless they make Dear Leader mad.
