My god, you remember the whole Spiggy thing? You must have been a reader of National Lampoon in the early 1970s.
 
There are probably quite people who consider him a traitor to his race, and I think he knew that. IMO he tried hard to fight that element in the Republican Party, but truly unfortunately it turned out to be a large and energized swath of the party. And unfortunately, he wanted that energy; he courted it; he thought it could be harnessed. For the greater good, I guess.

I was trying to tell my mom why McCain did not want Trump at his funeral. She's 93 and has dementia and to put it into terms she understood I told her Trump was an *******. When it comes down to it was he really that bothered by Trump's trash-talking? He didn't dislike Trump, he despised him. And I don't know if it's all down to Trump's continuous insults.

I can't say I was on board with everything McCain did; I was pretty disgusted by the way the GOP refused to work with Democrats on the stimulus and Obamacare. He courted the energy of the haters in his party but never seemed to understand how pervasively toxic the party had become, which is weird, because a lot of the poison was aimed at him personally.

He's gone down fighting for sure with his clear wishes - I do not want that SOB at my funeral. If anyone wants evidence that the GOP is ****** because of its internal contradictions, doesn't this pretty much do it? A 32-year Republican senator doesn't want the Republican president at his funeral. How much clearer could the statement be?

McCain's voting record did tend to remain constant, whilst his GOP colleagues moved more into lockstep with the party line.

I don't mind admitting that McCain's death struck me especially hard. I've mentioned at times that I was actually offered the job of the McCain campaign's official blogger in 2007, and I say that as not some kind of wow, look at me, it was completely a fluke. I will add here that I never met him, and the job offer was a little loose--it was an if we offered you the job, would you take it, rather than we want you right now. Unfortunately accepting required me to move to DC and at the time McCain looked dead in the water.

So did I. I was happy in 2008 that America had a choice between two fundamentally decent men, who also represented a sufficient difference in policy to make the choice meaningful.

I suspect the judgment was that he had to pick someone from that wing of the party, regardless of his personal preferences or risk some of those Tea Party supporters staying home on polling day. That he felt he had to indulge them was a clear warning sign that things were not well in the Republican party. Instead of fighting back they embraced the crazy and that paved the way for Trump.
 
John McCain was an honorable and courageous man. He lived an admirable life, serving his country in the navy, as a POW, and as a senator. He died with his dignity intact. He earned my respect.

That element of the GOP was used against him in his 2000 presidential bid when the Bush campaign ran a despicable push poll to hurt him in South Carolina. He was campaigning with his adopted daughter from Bangladesh when voters were asked, "Would you be more or less likely to vote for John McCain…if you knew he had fathered an illegitimate black child?"

The sad part is seeing people sharing the video of him defending Obama from a racist attack during the 2008 campaign and realizing the wing of party represented by the lady in the red sweater he's admonishing ultimately won out.
